An Awftal Moment.
Last night.a map who had been playing

Virginia said, In a quiet, determined tone,
to the dealer as he laid his last dollar's
worth of checks on tho tray and five: "If
1 Jose that I'll blow iny brains out.” There
was a hush in that small room where
souls are bartered nightly lor the chance
of winning gold. Youths, fevered With
the excitement of the hazard, drow back
the awful threat, and old gamesters cast
an eye of dread upon the pale-faced man
who staked his life upon a oard. The gay
murmur which almost always arises from
a group of gamblers was hushed. Th
long, thin Angers of the denier trembled.
Hia colorless face twitched nervously.
The jaw of tho attending waiter dropped,
and hie tray was hold mechanically by
tho nerveless hand. Slowly the cards
wore thrown from tho little silver box.
The live lost! The money of the ruined
gambler was added swiftly to the dealer’s
board. The features or the lost gambler
were terrible to behold. "With one swift
gesture of despair, he turned and said to
a friend la a husky whisper, “Bob, lea' me
a dollar.” “Go to blank,” replied tbe faith
less friend, as he laid a four-bit check on
the king. Then the relenting suicide
passed out and stood fatty Evans off for a
plate of oysters.—Gold Bill (Xev.) AW

A RenilnlueriMW el Leu. D. Prentice.
i .In June, 1807, thirty-nino yoars ago, oc
curred one of Geo. D. Prontlecf’e terrible
street encounters on account of his keen,
unsparing lashing of men in the Louis
ville Journal. Regarding this I heard the
oilier day a story which will interest your
readers. In all of Trainee's buttles the
majority of the pwple el JLoaWviMowertf 1
angrily enlisted in sympathy with the
.great writer or the victim. At the date I
write of there was employed in the office
Of tii* Journal a young Pennsylvanian, a
compositor, about fourteen year* of age,
of medium height, but of wonderful mus
cular build and power. Work was under
way in the composing-room, when shots
were heard in tho street in front, and, of
course, foreman, typos, “subs," and
"dev lie” rushod to the window* to bm.
Just in front of the office Were George
D. Prentice and a man named Boyd,
who had exchanged several shot*, and
clinching, had fallen, Prentico under, and
Boyd was reaching for hi* bowl# knife to
end tho work. Our young typo only saw
that bis loved chief was near de*th, w jieo,
droplngon the floor his half-filled stick
jtf matter, he turned, dashed down the
Stalryray to tho street and through the
crowd with tho impetuosity of a mad hull,
and aimed a blow which would liavn
ended tho fight. But it did not the lit
tended blow didn't-. <hir hero felt a sharp,
swinging blow ou the left side of his neck,
which brought him to his knees and fouud
that he had been cut with a bowie-knife
In the hands of a young medical student
there. Turning In an instant, the man
drew his own knife and attacked his as
sailant, ptf jkjng pirn > cut Which passed
almost clear across the abdomen, abd re
ceived a second cut in the left side, which,
an Inch lower, would have reached the
heart and finished his life. A dozen
knives were busy Ift an Instant, and in a
moment, more the battle was over. The
young- medical student was lying bathed
In blood, as was also the typo and another
victim to- the latter'* knife. Carefully
nursing aud attendance through a lung
and dangerous illness resulted in the recov
ery of all, and no lfgal steps were taken
in the matter. The third man’s name I
know nothing of, but tho typo was
James B. KteedmaO, now of Toledo, and
who was one of the Generals at the disas
trous field of Ghickamauga, who well
earned the rank of Major General, and
whoso neck now shows plainly the mark
sof the deadly knife of Dr. Tomlinson, now
of Harrodsburg, Ky., tho father of two of
the wives of Gen. William Worth Belknap,
of vrhora your readers have doubtless,
heard recently. In September of the same
year young Stood man left Louisville, and
after a short wandering eastward, arrived
In the Miami Valley the same year.- i&n
