QQMETig 33# , A Laundry Secret.— The following receipt for doing up shirts will be found of use by many house-wives: Take two ounoea of fine white gum arabio powder, put it iu a pitcher and pour a pint or more of water, and then having covered it, let it stand all night. In the morning pour it oarofully from the dregs into a clean bottle and oork it and Keep it for use. A teaspoonful of gum water stirred in a pint of starch made iu the usual manner, will give to lawns, cither white or printed, a look of newness, when nothing else can restore them after they have been washed. To prepare apple dumplings: Have eight or more large cooking apples ; peel them and take the cores out; make a short paste with a poundof flour, warm milk and half an ounce of salt: make as many balls as you have apple*; dour a table; roll the balls of paste very thin; put an apple in the centre or each; till the cores of each with powdered sugar; moisten the edges; fold the paste up; tie each in a small napkin previously buttered and flowered; have boiling waterin a large stew-pan; put the apples in; boil forty minutes; drain the apples, take off the napkins and perve with lemon sauce; pour some over and send tho rest iu tho bowl,— N. Y. World. . A Valuable li* tpif.— Tho .Journal of Chemistry publishes a recipe for the destruction of Insects, which, if it be one-half as eflioacious as it is claimed to be, will prove invaluable. Hot alum water is a recent sugges tion, as an insectioide. It will destroy red . and black ants, cockroaches, ohinbh-bugs. and all the crawling posts which infest our houses. Take two pounds of alum and dissolve it in three or four quarts of boiling wa ter; let it stand on the lire till the alum disappears; then apply with a brush while nearly boiling hot to every joint and crevice in your closets, bedsteads, pantry shelves, and the like. Brush crevices in tho floor of the skirting or mopbeards, if you suspect they harbor vermin. Carrots Instead of Eons.—An ex change says: It is not generally known that boiled carrots, when pro perly prepared, form an excellent substitute for eggs in puddings; they must, for this purpose, be boiled and mashed, and passed through a coarse cloth or hair sieve strainer; the pulp is then introduced among the other ingredients of the pudding, to the total omission of eggs. A pudding made up in this way is much lighter than where eggs are used, and is much more palatable. On the prin ciple of economy, this fact is worthy of the prudent housewife’s attention. Starting a Fire in Still Weather. All housekeepers have at some time realized the difficulty of lighting a tire in a still, damp morning, when the chimney will not draw, and vig orous blowing proves ineffectual. Science explains the trouble as •‘caused by tne difficulty encountered In overcoming the inertia of the long column of air in the pipe or chim ney, by the small column of air that can be forced up through the inter stices of wood and coal, at tbo bot tom of which the fire is kindled.” Jt may be remedied by first lighting a few bits of shavings or paper placed on top; thus by the heated air forc ing itself into the chimney and estab lishing there an upward current, the room is kept free from the gas or stnoke which is so apt to 1111 the room, and the tire can then bo lighted from below with good success. Tomato Catsup.—A correspondent of the New York Evening Post gives the following recipe, and sends the editor a sample bottle as evidence of the quality of the catsup: Take one bushel tomatoes; boil until solt, then squeeze them through a line sieve; add one half gallon vinegar, one and one-half pints of salt, two ounces of cloves, cme-quarter pound allspice, two tablsspoonfuls cayenne pepper and thresof black pepper, nnd live heads of gtrrlick; mix together and boil until reduced about one half. It is better to use the spices whole, ex cwt thejsayenne pepper. Put the spices efbjapt—cayenne popper—in a bag, andgarlic in another bag, and remove when done. TOMato Pickle.— Take one peck | tomatoes, sliced; on 6 dozen good-stead cucumbers, sliced; one dozen good-sized white onions, sjloef; one hlozen green peppers, ifhole; one pint salt, and enough cdW water to cover them all. Let t§et|§staftd in the brine twenty-four hourt, then drain and 'replenish with fresh water to stand over night. Squeeze the water all out, and qhop all up together, not very line. Put into a porcelain preserving kettle witb one gallop good cider vinegar, oßp pound light brown sugar, one ounce celery seed, two ounces mus tardmixe4 in the warm juice. Cook slowly about half the day, or until thoroughly done. I ASHES AS A KUKVEimVE OK RUST. As you request the experience of far ufcW on the above subject, 1 will give mine: Sofferal years ago I had a piece of bottom land that I designed to sow in wheat. lfnhd a good many large oak trees on it, all of which I succeeded in haiping down and reducing to ashes where thejr’Sfell. I then took a shovel arid scattered Ihe ashes light and left as f|r as I couhl throw them, taking up a sihaff quantity at a time. The rust made its the tisual time, and rMlaid the crop fully one-third; bnt where the wakes were scattered, although the amount Was very small, the wheat was not irijuged nt all. I also sowed a piece of very old land the same season that had bqett manured three years pre viously with barn-yard manure, which was thrown in piles as it was hauled to the field. Tms field was ruined by the rust, excepting the places where the piles of manure were thrown previous to scat tering, which was not injured in the least. It is evident that the ashes in the one case, and the manure in the other, pre vented the rust; but the same might not happen iu afl seasons, though it is my opinion that thorough drainage, good preparation of the soil, and the right kind of fertilizers, will always insure a satisfactory yield, so far as rust is con cerned. The NeW York Tribune is weaken ing in its belief that Hayes can carry New York. Here is one of its latest paragraphs: “There ought to be no risks taken inGoverhor Tilden’s own State. Here he is on his native heath. He knows every county and almost every town in the State down to the last recorded vote. He is a sleepless, watchful op ponent, a master in the arts of poli tics, and as silent as be is sagacious.” TAILORING. The following is an extract from a description, published in tho New York Tribune, by tho wel known agriculturist, Solon Robinson: All tho farmers were of the “well to do" sort, and some of them, who have turned their attention to fruits aud market gardening, have grown rich. The soil is loam, varying from sandy to clayey, and surface gently undulating, intersected with small streams and occasional wet meadows, in which deposits of peat or muck are stored, sufficient to fertilize tho whole upland surface, aftor it has been exhausted of its natural fertility. It is certainly one of the most extensive fertile tracts, in an almost level position, and suitable condition for pleasant farming, that we know of this side of the Western prairies. We found some of the oldest farms apparently just as profitably productive as when first cleared of forest fifty or a hundred years ago. The geologist would soon discover tho cause of this continued fertility. The wholo country is a marine deposit, and all through the soil we found evidences of calcareous substances, generally in the form of indurated calcareous marl, showing many distinct forms of ancient shells, of the ry formation; and this marly substance is scattered all through the soil, lu a very comminuted form, and in the exact condition most easily assimilated by such plants as the farmer desires to cultivate. $200,000 Worth of Dry Goods, Notions, Clothing Hats, Boots, Shoes, Ac.
