VOL. 2. PRESIDENTIAL ELECTION. VICTORY! TILDEN AND HENDRICKS ELECTED A “Solid South,” with New York, Indiana, Connec ticut, New Jersey, and probably Pennsylvania, Wisconsin and Ohio. AT LEAST 200 ELECTORAL VOTES FOR TILDEN AND HENDRICKS. A DEMOCRATIC HOUSE SECURED. 2 O’clock I*, n. NEW lUUK. Albany, N. Y., Oct. 7.—Weather cloudy and warm. Voting active. Slight disturbances have occurred at two’holding places on the Congres sional ticket. The Democrats are polling a heavy vote, but the Repub licans seem satisiled. An increased Democratic majority is looked for in this city and county. ItITODF. ISLAND. Providence, R. 1., Nov. 7.—Election proceeding briskly, considering a heavy rain, which is so much needed that it adds an element of cheerful ness. The returns from the several wards in this city at 11 o’clock show about 2,679 votes cast, with a majori ty of 1,070 for Hayes. The Constitutional amendments are probably all defeated. MARYLAND. Baltimore, Nov. 7.—Up to this hour, 11:5 a. m., the election through out the city has been conducted with the utmost quietness and good order, a very heavy vote being polled. GEORGIA. Auodsta, Ga., Nov. 7.—Election in this city quiet. Up to 12:30 there were about 2,000 votes for Tilden and COO for Hayes. LOUISIANA. New Orleans, Nov. 7.—Weather clear and cool; business entirely sus pended. The election is progressing smoothly throughout the city, and the utmost peace and quiet prevails. TENNESSEE. Memphis, Nov. 7.—The election is progressing very quietly, and indica tions are that a full vote will be poll ed. The chief interest centres in the Gubernatorial race. The Repub licans are voting solid for Thomas, Independent Democratic candidate for Governor, and the indications are that he will carry the city. NORTH CAROLINA. Wilmington, Nov. 7.-Election here is progressing very quiet, a large vote being polled, and both sides working hard. The Democrats claim that they will carry the State by 4,000 to 10,000 The Republicans claim they will carry the State by a small ma jority. The basis of comparison will be the Gubernatorial vote of 1872, where Caldwell, Republican, had 1,826 majority in the State. <1 O’clock P. H. NORTH CAROLINA. Raleiou, Nov. 7.— The election is progressing quietly. The heaviest vote ever known iu the State is be ing polled. No disturbances report ed from any quarters. N'JEW UAMPSIIIRE. Concord, Nov. 7.—The election in this city is progressing quietly, with iitttle or no excitement. At various places the vote polling in the Cen tral Ward up to noon was much larger than that of previous years at same time. Tho following was the last count before noon: Ward 4, Hayes 323, Tilden 200; wards, Hayes 316, Tilden 149: ward 6, Hayes 275, Tilden 184; ward 7, Hayes 100 Tilden 94. At the Republican headquarters no dispatches have been received from towns in the State except North fleld, which gave a Republican ma jority, which is a gain. The weather is rainny, but probably will not inter fere with the vote of the State, which will, it is generally thought, be close and smaller than thatof last spring. MASSACHUSETTS. Boston, Nov. 7.—The unpleasant weather does not seem to interfere with voting in this city. A large vote is being cast, and business is at a stand-still. Hull, the first town in eastern Massachusetts, gives nayes 32, Tilden 24, Rice 31, and Adams 25. A large vote is being polled in But ler’s district. Indications at present are that he will be elected over both competitors, though Judge Hoar is receiving some unexpected support. Worcester, Nov. 7.—The election is progressing with spirit. A steady rain has no effect on the voting. The ward rooms are all crowded, and a very large vote is being polled. On the Congressional vote both parties are solid, with but little scattering. Rice keeps well up to his ticket. OHIO. Cincinnati, Nov. 7.—Business is at a stand-still and a largo vote is boing polled, There aro indications of quite an increase over the October vote. Every thing is quiet so far as heard from. Tho weather is cloudy, with a cool west wind. NEW YORK. New York, Nov. 7.—The election, both here and in Brooklyn, is pro ceeding quietly, no disturbances be iug reported. Up to noon a number of arrests for illegal voting had been made. The storm continues. Avery heavy vote is polling. Troy, Nov. 7.—A large vote is be ing polled here. No disturbances are reported, and no arrests for illegal voting have been made. The vote at noon stood 7,700, against 5,200 at the same time last fall. New York, Nov. 7.— lndications are that a vote almost equal to the regis tration will be polled here. About five hundred parties were arrested, many of whom were discharged. Auburn, N. Y., Nov. 7.—The vote so far in this city shows Republican gains. The weather is very pleasant, and a heavy vote will be polled. New York, Nov. 7.—A number of arrests were made iu the lower part of the city, of liquor dealers, for keeping their stores open, but they were discharged by the Police Jus tice. About 2 o’clock it was discovered that tho Repuulicans were distribu ting to Democrats an Electoral ticket headed by tho names of Tilden and Hendricks, with all of the Republi can Electoral ticket underneath, which created intense excitement among the Democrats. A largo num ber of these tickets wore torn up by Democratic agents, but it is thought there are some thousand of thorn in the box. Arrests continue to be made. Fed eral supervisors and deputy marshals are challenging and swearing a large number of Democrats as to their votes. The Greenback party have put up boxes, but nearly all of them were abandoned early in the day. MISSOURI. St. Louis, Nov. 7.—Tho election is progressing with unusual quietness throughout the city, and a heavy vote is being polled. Tho increase of polling places has expedited voting very greatly, and up to noon more than one-half of the total regis tered vote had been polled. Not a breach of the peace orau angry dis cussion, and not a single arrest by either deputy marshals or city police has yet been reported, and the Indi cations are there will not be the slightest disturbance during the day. Both sides are working hard for their respective candidates. 8 O’clock P, M. ALABAMA. Montgomery, Nov. 7.—A1l quiet as far as heard from. Hayes’ majority in this city is 1,600. It is safe to say seven Democrats are elected to Con gress. ILLINOIS. Chicago, Nov. 7—3 o’clock r. m.— The Democrats are claiming the elec tion of Hoxsie, Harrison and Lemoine to Congress. Tho Germans are scratching their tickets. INDIANA. Indianapolis, Nov. 7.—A1l quiet full vote indicated. Indianapolis, Nov. 7— B :10 p.m.— Returns from forty townships give Tilden 5,809, Hayes s’Bol. The same places in October gave Williams 5,789 Harrison 5,898. NORTH CAROLINA. Wilmington, Nov. 7.—The election closed without the slightest disturb ance. The ticket is very long, and no roports yet. It will probably be late before anything definite can be sent. Wilmington, N. C., Nov. 7.—Second ward in this city, Dem. gain 103; Fifth ward, Rep. gain G. Lylesville gives a Dem. gain of 15. Lunenburg, Richmond county, Dem. gain 34. LOUISIANA, New Orleans, Nov. 7.— The Dem ocratic State Central Committee have dispatches claiming 15,000 majority fn Claiborne parish, and a thousand majority in Lincoln parish—net gain of over 13,000 in the two parishes. MASSACHUSETTS. Boston, Nov. 7.--The Evening Jour nal says Cropo, Republican, has been re-elected to Congress in the First District} by a large majority and that Harris, Republican., is elected to Congress from the Second District. Twenty-four towns give Hayes 6,318 Tilden 3,836; Rice 6,808, Adams 3,81 C, Baker 435. Nine wards in Boston give Hayes 9,893, Tilden 7,419. Rice has a majority of 52 in these wards. Boston. Nov. 7.—Returns received gives Frothingham, Democrat, for Congress in the Fifth District 1,003 over General Banks, whose defeat is claimed. Leopold Morse, Democrat, is probobly elected to Congress in the Fourth District by a small ma jority. The election of Claflin, Re publican in the Eighth, of Harris, Republican, in the Second, and Lor ing, Republican, in the Sixth Dis trict claimed by the Traveler. MW HAMPSHIRE. Republicans claim the State by 2,000 majority. Concord, Nov. 7. Thirty-five towns,, with an aggregate vote of 11,- 000, show a Repblican loss of only six on the election of 1872. iXEW YORK. 'New York, Nov. 7.—Returns from 210 election districts in this city show COLUMBUS, GA., WEDNESDAY MORNING, NOVEMBER 8, 1876. a majority of twenty-one thousand for Tilden. CONNECTICUT. The gold and stock bulletin from Hartford City gives Tilden nino hun dred majority—a gain of 1,323 on tho Presidential vote of 1872. Tho last returns received from Con necticut show largo Republican gulns, and indicate the probability that tho Republicans will carry the fetate. Washington, Nov. 7.—Connecticut seven thousand Democratic majority. Gen. Hawley, Republican, Chief of the Centennial Commission, defeated for Congress. (Please remember that dispatches dated Washington are made from special bulletins and gossip. ) INDIANA. New York, Nov. 7.—The Gold and Stock Telegraph Company has the following bulletins: Indianapolis, Nov. 7.— Returns so far received show small gains for Hayes over the October vote. Reports from various parts of the Stato indicate Republican gains and a probability of Hayes carrying the State. HOVTH CAROLINA. • Charleston, Nov. 7.—Unofficial ro turns from various sections of the State show large Democratic gains everywhere, as compared with the vote of two years ago. No Republi can gain is yet reported anywhere. The Democratic Committee are jubi lant. The Republicans are unwilling to grant that Chamberlain’s majority of 1872 has been overcome. NEW YORK. New York, Nov. 7.—Two hunndred and seventy election Districts of this city heard from, give Tilden 24,000 majority. Tne city will give Tilden from for ty-five thousand to fifty thousand majority, judging by half the city al ready heard from. TENNESSEE. Memphis, Nov. 7.—A heavy vote cast. This city will give ten thous and over any former vote. It is be lieved Thomas, Independent Demo cratic candidate for Governor, has carried the county by over 1,500, and the Republicans elected their legis lative ticket. The Democrats concede tho elec tion of Randolph, Republican, to Congress. D O'clock i*. M. VIRGINIA. Norfolk, Nov. 7.— Election quiet. The majority in this city for Tilden is 954; majority for Goode, Dem., for Congress, 965. Democratic increase 574. Elizabeth City county gives 830 Re publican majority—Republican in crease of 200. CONNECTICUT. Hartford, Nov. 7.—Thirty-eight towns give Hayes 8,267, Tilden 7,601; Robinson,Rep.,7,37s, Hubbard, Dem., 6,805. Last spring these gave Robin son, Rep., 6,112, Ingersoll, Dem., 6,- 514—a Democratic last year of 402. Republican gain of 907. This includes no city whatever. Hartford gives Tilden a plurality of 789. The Democratic majority for Governor last spring was 676—Demo cratic gain in the city 313. Meriden gives Hayes 27 majority. BASMACH I'NETTS. Boston, Nov. 7.—ln ninety-six towns of Massachusetts Hayes has 36,230, Tilden 21,953, Bice 32,764, Ad ams 21,153, Baker 3,662. Returns so far received, according to Republi can estimates, indicate tho election of Governor Rice by a good majori ty; also tho election of Banks, Re publican, in the 7th District ; Crapo, Republican, in the First; Harris, Re publican, in the Second ; Field, Re publican, in the Third; Claflin, Re publican, in the Eighth; Norcross, Republican, in the Tenth. Other Congressional Districts are doubtful, aud the above reports may be changed by later returns. NEW HAMPSHIRE. Concord, Nov. 7.—Seventy towns and cities give Hayes 12,264, Tilden 11,371, scattering 261. In 1872, the same places gave Grant 10,975, Gree ly 9,684, scattering CG -Republican net loss in these places 368. NEW YORK. New York, 9:30 p. m., Nov. 7.—One hundred and seventy-six districts in the State outside of New York Cily give over 1872, Republican gains 3,510 and Democratic gains s,6sß—net Democratic gains 2,148. NORTH CAROLINA. Raleigh, Nov. 7.—Raleigh city and townships give a Democratic gain of 100. All points in the State heard from give, Democratic gains. Meck lenburg county, the home of Vance, gives a Democratic gain of 300. lO O’clock, I*. M. GEORGIA. Augusta, Nov. 7.— Returns seem to indicate the election of an unbroken Democratic delegation to Congress. There has been a large vote polled in Georgia. Every county in the Eighth District has gone Democrat ic. Richmond county gives over 3,000 Democratic majority. Savannah, Nov. 7.-Chatham county gives Hartridge, for Congress, over 6,000 majority; Tilden’s majority 8,000 Seven hundred negroes voted the straight Democratic ticket. Every thing passed off quietly, thongh there was a crowd of negroes in the city all day. SOUTH CAROLINA. The Democrats claim South Caro lina by four thousand. Barnwell, Aikon, Edgefield and Abbeville coun ties, heretofore Republican, are claimed by the Democrats. NEW YORK. New York, Nov. 7—9:30 p. m.— One hundred and forty-eight election dis tricts in Brooklyn, out of 161, give Tihlan a majority of 15,651. New York, Nov. 7.— Election dis tricts of New York City give Tilden 86,294, and Hayes 38,440. 247 election districts outside of the City of New York aud Brooklyn show a net Dem ocratic gain of 2,784, as compared with the Presidential voto of 1872, when Grant had 53,456 majority in the Stato. The Democratic majority in New York City this year is about 55,000, against 23,000 in 1872; in Broooklyn about 16,000, against not quite 5,000 iu 1872. IOWA AND ILLINOIS. Chicago, Nov. 7.—Returns from 13 lowa townships show heavy Republi can majorities. Tweuty Illinois town ships show Republican majorities. CONN ECTTCVT. Hartford, November 7. -Fifty-nine towns, including Meriden, the only city yet reported, give Hayes 14,397, Tilden 13,336—Hayes’ majority 1,002. Hayes’ vote over Robinson last spring 3,280; Tilden’s over Ingersoll 1,190. These 59 towns gave a Democratic majority last spring of I,o2B—Repub lican gain of 2,090. VIRGINIA. Richmond, Nov. 7.—Tilden’s ma jority in this city is 1,500. Returns from tho State show Democratic gains. Tho Democrats elect. Con gressmen from all tho districts ex cept tho Second aud Fourth, which are in doubt. A few returns from the Second District show a gain over Goode’s vote of 1874. Alexandria, Nov. 7.—Democratic majority in this city is 270; about same majority for State Constitution al Amendment. Gen. W. H. F. Lee was elected to State Senate. No doubt of Hunton’s re-election to Con- r gross by a majority of several thou sand. M O’clock P. M. M ANSACIIUSETTS, Boston, Nov. 7.—Butler in tho Sev enth District, Banks in the Fifth, Claflin in the Eighth, Crapo in the First, Robinson in the Eleventh, Rice in the Ninth, aud Norcross in tho Tenth, are elected to Congress—all Republicans. Harris, Republican, in the Second District, and Loring, Re publican, in tho Sixth, are probably elected. Dean in tho Third District, and Morse in the Fourth, Democrats, probably elected. The present Con gressional delegation stands Repub licans 5, Democrats 6. Republicans gain four Congressmen, and if the vote continues in the same ratio, will carry the State for Hayes by fifty thousand plurality. NEW HAMPSHIRE. Concord, N. H., Nov. 7.—Returns continue to come very favorable for the Pepublicans, The excitement is intense. WISCONSIN. Washington, D. C. Nov. 7.—Re turns from Wisconsin indicate seven thousand Democratic majority. INDIANA. Indianapolis, Ind., Nov. 7.—Re turns from eighty townships give Tilden 13,376, Hayes 13,433. The same places in October gave Wil liams 13,325, Harrison 13,702. Tho indications now are that Tilden’s majority will be between 7,000 and 10,000 in the State. NORTH CAROLINA. Wilmington, Nov. 7.— Returns show almost universal Democratic gains. Wilson county gives a Demo cratic gain of four hundred. Indica tions all show a decided Democratic majority in the State. Returns continue favorable to the Democrats. Republicans claim the State by ajsmall majority, but admit it will be very close. The Democrats claim the State by 5 to 10,000. The Star estimates the Democratic ma jority in the State at 4,500 to 6,000. Half Pant Eleven. MAINE. Portland, Nov. 7.—Fifty towns give Hayes 17,298, Tilden 13,240 — Hayes’ loss 85. NEW YORK, New York, Nov. 7—10:30 p. m.— Three hundred and sixteen towns and districts iu New York State, out side of this city and Brooklyn, show aggregate Republican majorities of 23,970— Republican gains 6,158; Dem ocratic majorities 12,099— Democratic gains 9,696. Net Democratic gains 3,538. With 18 election districts to hear from in the city, Tilden’s majority is 53,000. OHIO. Columbus, Nov. 7.—Returns from 308 wards, towns and precincts in about 60 counties, including about half of Cleveland and one-third of Cincinnati, show Hayes’ gains 4,407, Democratic gains 4,567—net Demo cratic gain as compared with the Gu bernatorial election in ’75, of 159. SOUTH CAROLINA. Charleston, Nov. 7.—Unofficial but trustworthy returns from about one half the Slate show a Democratic gain of over 12,000 compared with 1874, when Chamberlain had 10,000 majority over Green, Fusion. The Republicans claim that Charleston county will give a heavy Republican gain to offset the Democratic gain. The result hangs upon the coast counties not accessible by wire. INDIANA. Terre Haute, Ind., Nov. 7.—Five wards and townships in this county show Republican gain over October of 29. IOWA. Chicago, Nov. 7.— Partial returns from 17 counties in lowa show Re publican gains 714, Democratic gains 52-net Republican gains 662. KENTUCKY, Louisville, November 7.—Tilden’s majority in Kentucky is estimated at over 60,000. PENNSYLVANIA. Philadelphia, Nov. 7.— Returns from nearly every precinct in this city indicate a Republican majority on the Presidential ticket of 15,200. Tho city gave a Republican majority of 17,200 last year. Returns from twenty-four towns and townships outside of tho city— principally in Chester, Berks and Delaware counties—show a net gain for tho Republicans of 84 on the Governor’s vote last year. WISCONSIN. Milwaukee, Nov. 7.— Returns from 50 towns and wards in Wisconsin givo Hayos a majority of I,3oo—Re publican gain 947. MISSISSIPPI AND LOUISIANA. Louisville, Ky., Nov. 7.—Private news from all over Mississippi, from Superintendents to Mr. Van Horne, Division Superintendent of the West ern Union Telegraph Company re ports the election of five and perhaps more Democratic Congressmen, and says the State is Democratic by over thirty thousand. Information from the same sources states that, Louisiana has gone Dem ocratic. The majority in New Or leans is ten thousand. ALABAMA. Vote tho same as last election, the Democrats having seven Congress men. GEORGIA. Atlanta, Nov. 7.—The State gives a majority for Tilden of from 50,000 to 60,000. Democratic Congressional ticket elected throughout. ILLINOIS. Chicago, Nov. 3—9:15 p. m.— Re turns from twenty towns in Illinois givo Hayes 4,339, Tilden 3,484, Cooper 84— Republican gains; over vote for Governor in 1872 of 1,234, and Democratic gains I,32B— being a net Democratic gain of 94. INDIANA. Indianapolis, Ind., Nov. 7.—Re turns from one hundred townships in 54 counties givo a net Democratic gain of 245. CUSKCeTICVT. Hartford, Nov. 7.— Ninety-four towns give Hayes 32,302, Tilden 33,- 145. These towns last spring gave Robinson 24,435, Ingersoll 28,398. Democratic majority so far 1,001, against 3,963 last spring. NEW YORK.' New York, Nov. 7 —Vote of New York city: Tilden 112,208, Hayes 58,- 658, Cooper 252-Tiiden’s majority over Hayes 53,550. ALABAMA. Montgomery, Nov. 7. Returns show Democratic majorities from all directions, indicating at least 25,000 majority in the State. Seven Demo cratic Congressmen are certainly elected. In the Fourth District Haralson, present colored member, is opposed by Rapier, who is support ed by Spencer and all the Federal office-holders. Shelby, Democrat, is making gains, but not enough is known to warrant an estimate. VIRGINIA. Norfolk, Nov. 7.—Majority for Goode, Democrat, for Congress, in Portsmouth, I,olß—Democratic gain of 965. MARYLAND. Baltimore, Nov. 7.— Official re turns of this city givo a Democratic majority of 10,099. Returns from every portion of theStateshow Dem ocratic gains. Twelve O'clock—Midnight. MICHIGAN. Detroit, Nov. 7.— Eighteen pre cincts of this city show a net Demo cratic majority of I,9l7—Democratic gain of about 1,500. Returns from 57 townships give Hayes a net majority of 2,154-a net Democratic gain of 2,612. 11 o’clock p. m.— Returns from 78 townships and precincts give Hayes a net majority of 2,669-a Democratic gain of 3,652 us compared with the vote 1872. The same towns gave Cross well, Rep., for Governor, a, net majority of 809. FLORIDA. Lake City, Nov. 7.—Returns come in slow. The southern and western counties show largo Democratic gains. The Republicans have small gains in tly) eastern counties. The State looks Democratic. Expect definite returns about midnight. The Democrats ulaitn the State. WISCONSIN. Milwaukee, Nov. 7.— Ninety-eight wards give Tilden 12 majority—a Democratic gain of 994. This does not include any returns from the city of Milwaukee, where there are indi cations of large Republican gains. MASSACHUSETTS. Boston, Nov. 7.-Butler has three thousand plurality over Tarbox and Hoar. SOUTH CAROLINA. Augusta. Ga., Nov. 7.—A special to tho Chronicle & Sentinel, dated Co lumbia, 11 p. m., says Hampton is 10,000 ahead iu 15 counties heard from, but the Republican strong holds of Beaufort, Georgetown, Col leton and Charleston county will reduce this very considerably. Hamilton is sanguine of success by a small majority. By direction of the U. S. Deputy Marshal the polls were taken posses sion of by troops. There was no dis turbance, only citizens challenged votes. OHIO. Columbus, Nov. 7.— Returns from 448 townships and voting precincts in Ohio, covering 65 counties, show a net Democratic gain of 266 as com pared with tho Gubernatorial vote of 1875. CONNECTICTT. Hartford, Nov. 7.— Tho Senate, in all probability, yvIU be Republi can. Returns from 78 towns show a net Republican gain in the Lower House of thirty-three, which leaves no doubt that the Legislature is Re publican in both branches. One hun dred and twenty towns give Hayes 39,879, and Tilden 40,722. These towns last spring gave Robinson 29.- 835, Ingersoll 34, 969— Democratic loss 4,291. Gen. Hawley is defeated for Congress in the First District by about 150. INDIANA AND KENTUCKY. Indianapolis, Nov. 7—10:30 p.m.— Returns from 180 townships give Tilden 35,949, Hayes 35,334. The same places iu October gave Williams 35,- 141, Harrison 35,193 Democratic gain 667. Louisville, Nov. 7.—Majority 60,- 000. Clean Democratic Congression al delegation. WEDNESDAY .MORNING. ONE O’CLOCK A. M. VIRGINIA. Richmond, Nov. 8. — Petersburg, where troops were sent, give Hinton, Dem., for Congress, 219 majority— Democratic gain of 450. It is believed he is elected. In Goode’s district the Democratic gains are accumulating. Goode’s election in Virginia sends a clean Democratic delegation to Con gress. Returns from 125 towns, out side of this city, show a net Republi can gain of 284. Nine wards of this city, complete, show a Democratic gain of 1,198. Norfolk, Nov. B.—Tho indications are that Goode is elected to Congress by 1,000 majority. CONNECTICUT. New Haven, Nov. 8.—12 Midnight— The town of New Haven gives the Democratic Electoral ticket 1,874 ma jority. Phelps, Democratic candi date for Congress in thi3 district is re-elected over Kellogg, by a ma jority something less than two years ago. The State will bo close, but will undoubtedly give a small major ity for Tilden. Hartford, Nov. B.—Ono hundred and twenty-five towns, which do not include New London or New Haven, give Hayes 42,424, Tilden 43,343; Rob inson 42,070, Hubbard 43,353. These are against last spring: Robinson 31,611, Ingersoll 37,143. Democratic majority 919, against 5,532 last spring. The State no doubt gives Tilden a clean majority. The Legis lature in all probability is Republi can. Wait, Republican, in tho Third District, i3 elected to Congress; Phelps, Democrat, in Second, and, Warner, Democrat, in Fourth, are elected. The State representation in Congress is unchanged politically. • MISSOURI. Rallo, Nov. B.— Phelps county, 350 Democratic majority on the Nation al and State ticket. Bland, Demo crat, probably elected to Congress by an increased majority. NEW HAMPSHIRE. Concord, Nov. 8. —One hundred and fifty towns and cities givo Hayes 31,712, Tilden 28,196, scattering 63 Republicans net loss in these places 1,372. ILLINOIS. Chicago, Nov. B.—Latest returns continue io show Democratic gains. The State is certainly Demo cratic by a large majority. TENNESSEE. Nashville, Nov. B.— Election quiet in all parts of tho State. There is no doubt of the election of Porter, Dem., as Governor, and certainly eight out of ten Congressmen, by the Democrats. OHIO. Columbus, 0., Nov. 8—11.30 p. m. — Returns from five hundred townships and wards in Ohio show a net Repub lican gain of 177 over 1875, when Hayes’ majority was 554. NEW JERSEY. Trenton, N. J., Nov. B.— Leading Republicans here concede tho State to Tilden by from 3,000 to 5,000. The Legislature will probably be Demo cratic. SOUTH CAROLINA. Augusta, Ga., Nov. 8-12:10 a. m.— The Republicans claim South Caro lina by 15,000 majority. The Demo crats claim returns enough received to insure the election of Evans and Aiken, Democrats to Congress, in place of Wallace and Carpenter Re publicans. WISCONSIN. Milwaukee, Nov. B.—Twelve of the thirteen wards of Milwaukee and town give Tilden 1,206 majority. The Democratic majority in the county will not exceed 2,500. One hundred and fifty-four towns and wards, not including tho above, give Hayes a 1,050 majority—Democratic gain of 910. DELAWARE. Philadelphia, Nov. B.—New Castle county, Delaware, gives a Democrat ic majority of 700. Returns from other portions of the State indicate a Democratic majority of 2,500. Wil mington city Is nearly a tie. NEW YORK. New York, Nov. B.— Returns from 445 cities anil districts In tho State, outside of New York and Brooklin, show Republican majorities 34,269, gains 7,669, Democratic majorities 18,100, gains 17,181. Net Democratic gain 1,482. Tilden’s majority in King’s Coun ty 20,000 PENNSYLVANIA. Philadelphia, Nov. 8. Berks county gives a Democrutio majority of 7,000—a gain of 431; Cumberland county. Democratic majority 1,000- gain 300; Monroe county Democratic majority 2,3oo—gain 350; Northamp ton county, Democratic) majority 3,6Uo— gain 720; Blair county, Repub lican majority 500— Democratic gain 45; Dauphin county, Republican ma jority 1,600-Democratic gain 270; York county, Democratic majority 3,7oo—gain 700; Lehigh county, Dem ocratic majority 2,000—a Republican gain of 100; Lancaster county, Re publican majority 6,000—a gain of 900. TWO O'CLOCK A. Jl. INDIANA. Indianapolis, Nov. 8. Returns from 220 townships give Tilden 46,316, Hays 45,647. The same places in Oc tober gave Williams 45,486, Harrison 45,319—net Democratic gain 502. The Democratic majority in the State will not be less than 7,000. SOUTH CAROLINA. Charleston, Nov. B.— The Demo crats have certainly elected Evans in Fourth, and Aiken in the Third Dis tricts to Congress. The State is prob ably carried for Hampton and for Tilden by a small majority, but both sides still claim it. The city of Char leston gives Hampton a majority, and the result in the State depends upon the vote of Charleston county, which cannot be ascertained until morning. Phihadelphia, Nov. B.—Randall, Democrat re-elected to Congress, 27,000 majority. TEXAS. Galveston, Nov. B.—The Democrat ic majority will probably exceed 75,- 000; [uo doubt the largest given in any State for either party.] NORTH CAROLINA. Raleigh, Nov. B.— Heavy Demo cratic gains reported from all quar ters from which returns have been received. There is no longer doubt that the Democrats have carried the State. The Republicans concede it. The Democrats elect seven out of eight Congressmen. In the small county of Cleveland, the Democrats gain 648. CALIFORNIA. San Francisco, Nov. B.—Returns indicate the Republicans have car ried the State by a fair majority. Nothing from Oregon or Nevada, ex cept a Democratic gain reported in Virginia City. CONNECTICUT. Habtford, Nov. B.— One hundred and thirty-eight of 167 towns gives Tilden 4,684 majority. LOUISIANA. New Orleans, Nov. 7—11:30 p. m.— Returns meagre, not sufficient for reliable estimates. The Democrats claim the State by 20,000, and have dispatches from several voting pre cincts of the Interior showing heavy Democratic gains on the election of 1874. The Democrats claim the city by 12,000. The Republican Com mittee estimate their majority inside the city at 18,000 to 21,000, and con cede the city to the Democrats by 8,000 to 10,000. The best iuformed moderate Republicans claim the State by 4,000. WISCONSIN. Milwaukee, Nov. 7.—Returns from 176 towns and wards outside of Mil waukee give Hayes 1,034 majority net Democratic gain of 789. The Democrats have probably carried the State. [The Radical majority in 1875 was onlp 841.] GEORGIA. Augusta, Nov. 8. Avery heavy vote iti the State. The Democratic majority will approximate, if not ex ceed, 75,000. Returns from the First, Second and Third Districts leave no doubt of the re-election of Hartridge, Smith and Cook. Alloftheold mem bers will be re-elected, with the ex ception, perhaps, of Felton, Ind. Dem., in the 7th, who is opposed by Dabney, regular Democrat. The election in this District will be very close; chances favor Dabney. Ste phens, Blount and Hill have no op position.
