This week Judge Klddo will held our Superior Court, presiding in those cases In which Judge Crawrord was formerly of counsel. Judge Crawford will hold court for Judge Klddo. They havo swapped Cir cuits for this week. Court meets at 9 o’clock to-morrow morning. Political Speaking. Yesterday at Crawford, after tho Lyon murder case was i postponed, Col. Sam ford was waited upon, and psked to ad dress the people, their being quite a orowd present. He did so, and our re porter describes the effort as a splendid one. He claimed Tilden’s election, and electrified the people with a rousing Democratic speech. For Alderman Second Ward. At this time we need good Aldermyn. Questions of moment involving legal questions are to be discussed. Asa voter and tax payer residing in the Second Ward, I suggest Beeso Crawford, Esq., as one of the candidates. His work for the party entitle him to no opposition, laying aside for tho present his personal fit ness. We hope he will serve. Second Ward. Fine Work. Those of onr readers who intend paint ing their houses or stores, should eali at Mr. Giles’ photographic gallery and examine the work done there by Wil helm A Herrington. One of the rooms is splendidly and handsomely papered, and the othor kalsomined. Both uro finished with good taste, which goes to prove that Wilhelm A Herrington are artists in their line. Their work speaks for itself, and we therefore refer to It. They have about completed a job for our office. Those who recalled the office os it stood several years ago, will not reognize it since it has pass ed under their brush. We have now one of the handsomest llnished business offices of any newspaper in the State, and those who want their houses put In the same order must do like wo did, coll on Wilhelm A Herrington. nr storc. In our yesterday’s Issue we promised to send a special reporter to Crawford, and this morning furnish our readers with tho details. This we did at a considerable ex pense, but the matter stands like it did In our last account, owing to the fact that the case was continued until to-morrow morning at 10 o’clock. The motion for a eonttnuano* was made \iy viol. Waddell, for tho Hint®. ii ban just arrived, and wanted time to summon witnesses and look Into the case. The de fendants wero represented by Col. Kam ford. THE ACCUSED are all under guard in the court-house. Mr. and Mrs. Davis and their daughter, Mrs. Lyon, are in one room, and Charley Moinika, the slaver, in another. He stiil says ho was hired to do the work by Mrs. Lyon, wife of deceased; and the detailed confossion made by him, and published in our last issue, boars it out. Terry, the man whom she was to mar ry when Lyons was dead, has made his escape. Birr BUI In Full Operation In Uuluui- Ma. Messrs. Pearce A Bro. invite tho atten tion of rico growers to their now mill, in the Times this morning. They are pre pared to clean it as handsomely as it can bo done down in tho low country. Wo wero surprised that tho quantity of rico raised about hero would justify the erec tion o! such complete machinery for hull ing it as the Messrs. Pearce have put up; but they inform us that they havo several hundred bushels of rough rice awaiting "Its turn at tho mill.” Wo nro glad of this, and trust tho growth of this useful graiu will be greatly stimulated by tho enterprise of these gentlemen. Dirty Laiuim Again. It is a useless, as well as a thankless, servico we are trying to do our citizens whose business or pleasuro eallß them on the streets at night, in urgiug the Street Lamp Controllers to have the glasses cleaned and kept clean during these black and sloppy nights. The burning of gas In such unwashed lamps is a waste of money; and they should bo properly kept, or left unllghtod altogether. The candi dates are having some night walking to do, and we will ask them to give a glance at the publlo lamps occasionally—that they may walk and work in tho light, nf*t>r the election. City Bcglstratlun Closed The time for registering for tho city election closet! last ngitit. From tho list it appears that about tho usual number havo registered. By count 833 whites and 426 colored voters have signified their willingness to vote in the coming contest. Tho next three weeks can be profitably employed by the candidates in seeing the registered voters. The man who failed to register has lost his importance wit h mu nicipal candidates. In 1875,771 whites and 418 colored voters registered, making a total of 1189 voters. This year 1259 have registered, showing an increase in registration of 70 votes. I*rcuiiuni Malk. Yesterday Mr. Binford, of Pearce, Bin ford A Cos., had the premium stalk of sugar cane. The stalk measures fourteen feet in height, had twenty-threo good joints, and weighed nine and one-hair poands. It was raised in Jackson county, Florida. It would not take many such specimens to make a hogshead of sugar. Mud and Rain. Columbus just now has plenty of mud and rain. The streets and crossings are in a bad condition, the dust having gone to mud. Tho rain continued most of yes terday. At one time the sun shone out for a little while. UE.nuNTKATIN AT HAMII.THN. Uraud Tarrtollnbl Prove*slim- SPEECHES, FLAG PRESENTATION, SC. ' - '■ • Notwithstanding tho vory lnelcmoint weather, Friday night was tho occasion of a gay time In Hamilton. It hnd been decided previously to have a grand torch light procession and Jublleo over TUden’s election, but In tho evening tho clouds lowered and a heavy rain set In. For a while there was some talk of postpone ment, but tho neighborhood around Ham ilton came In In such a force, the fair women of the county weathering the storm In honor of tho occasion. This In fused new life Into tho jubilee, and short ly after dark bonfires wero kindled In the streets, and the procession formed. There were mony men In the lino, while the fair daughters of Harris county thronged the balconies, and as tho proces sion passed, waved their handkerchiefs and scarfs as a token of approbation and a hearty enthusiasm. THE PROCESSION was formed In the northern extremity of tho town, and marched down Broad street to tho Hamilton Female College. From the College the procession moved by Col, J. T. Johnson’s house, and thence to the Court House Square. There the crowd was entertained with SPEECHES. Hon. L. L. Stanford was first called on. Ho made an ablo speech, and was well received. Col. J. M. Mobley was the next speaker, and those who had had the pleasure of hearing him previously, pronounced this spoecu tho lincst effort of his life. Prof.C. B. LaHatte being called upon, responded In appropriate and happy re- Hiarks. FLAG PRESENTATION. At the conclusion of Prof. Lallatte’s spoech, Capt. Stanford, in behalf of the Journal office, presented a beautiful ban ner to Cataula District, It having given Tllden and Hendricks the largest majori ty of any district in the county. Capt. T. H. Kimbrough, In a neat and well-timed speech, accepted It for his district, ILLUMINATIONS. The court-house; the residence of Col. J. M. Mobley, Col. J. T. Johnson, ltcv. G. S. Johnson, and the Journal office, were all tastily illuminated. During the speech cannon were fired at intervals. THE WINDING UP. At a late hour the crowd dispersed. Not a single case of disorder occurred to mar tho serenity of tho evening. The men re turned to their homos to sleep over visions of Tilden in the White House, good gov ernment, and a general prosperity of tho country. At Col. Mobley’s and Col. J. T. Johnson’s some of the prettiest and most bewitch ing maidens had congregated to lend their presence to tho occasion. With such bright eyes beaming upon brave men, it is no wonder that everybody voted the demonstration a grand success. Our special reporter returned yesterday morning, bearing the appearance of hav ing left something in tho shapo of a lionrt at Hamilton, and we fear he was not suc cessful in getting one in return. Ho thinks of drowning himself, or going Into a mon astery. Before ho does so, however, he desires ills grateful thanks returned to Eugene Granberry, of the Journal, and Capt. Kimbrough for courtesies extended him. > ♦ • ■■■•- To Druggists and Physicians and Dealers In Paints, Oils, Nlns% and Pntty. Bv refernnee in Cm of M. D. Among the physicians who came to the assistance of our stricken peo ple during the recent epidemic, none are worthy more honorable mention than Dr. DeGraffenried, of Colum bus. His faithful and devoted pro fessional labors were confined almost exclusively to tho poorer classes of our citizens, and with the self abne gation of a true philanthropist, lie daily ministered to their wants. Hundreds of our people, his grate ful patients, will remember with what cure and assiduity he watched over them during sickness, and they will never forget this kind friend and good physician, as they invariablv called him. The Dootor was often a visitor to our sanctum during the evenings when ho could spare time from his professional duties.
