WIT AND Ht'HIOH.
“Milligan, bo careful how you
swap nags with that thur man ; he’ll
cheat you.” “Never do you mind,
Squire; I guess I am judge of hospi
tality.”
"Make good use of tho money, my
son,” said a nice man who had given a
newsboy live cents for some trilling
service. "You bet,” said the boy;
“I alius gets away with the other
fellers when I pitches nickels In the
alley.”
“Yesterday being a pleasant Sun
day,” says the Norwich Bulletin,
“most of the boys who attended Sun
day school brought home a good
many chestnuts which a kind man
had given them.”
Said Mrs. Partington: “You see
that blessed man that preached for
us last Sunday? Well ho was first a
circus rider, then a locust preacher,
and he’s an exhauster.”
“Was the crowd tumultuous?’ 'in
quired one mau of another who had
just como from a mass meeting, “Too
multuousl oh, nojjustabout multu
ous enough to comfortably fill the
hall.”
Brooklyn Argus: “Bruce Lad re
course to the sword, Tell to a bow
and arrow, and Washington appealed
to the God of battles; but when a wo
man strikes for liberty she uses any
thing she can lay her hands on.
An Irishman being a Bttlo fud
dled, was asked what was his relig
ious belief. “Is it me belafo ye’d be
asking about?” said he. “It’s the
same as the widdy Brady. I owe her
twelve shillings for whiskey, and she
belaves I’ll niver pay her; and faith
that’s my belafe too.”
It is related that during a recent
public welcome given to Gen. But
ler at Bangor, Maine, there was
stretched across a street a flag bear
ing the motto: “Welcome to Gen.
Butler, the ‘Hero of Five Forks,’ and
God knows how many spoons.”
“I say, Jones, how is it that your
wife dresses so magnificently, and
you always appear out at the el
bows?” “You see, Thompson, my
wife dresses according to the (!a
zette of Fashion, and I dress accord
ing to my ledger.”
Christmas morning they stood be
fore the altar, and tho music of the
marriage bells was sweeter to them
than the music of the spheres.
Christmas morning, four years later,
a bald-headed man jumped out of
bed, half distracted, and wuuted to
know why his wife was such an in
fernal fool as to put a Christmas
horn in that boy’s stocking.
“I would rather vote for the devil
than for you,” was whut au American
sovereign told a candidate in a Main
street saloon last night. “But in case
your friend should not come for
ward,” said the unabashed aspirant
for oflioe, “might I then count upon
your assistance?” The glass glanced
off from his cheek and ho passed
out .—Riocfui (Xev.) Record.
He was a right feeling man, and,
speaking of the Turks, ho remarked
that those blasted infidels have got
to be cleared out of Christian F.urope.
Then he sat down in a lager beer sa

in the church near by sang so loud
that ho couldn’t concentrate his
mind on his Sunday evening game of
auction pitch.— Norwich Bulletin.
“Mama,” said a little one of tiiat
kind in our hearing, one day, “have
angels wings?” “Oh, certainly!”
says mama, full of ideas derived
from pictures, “they have wings.”
“Then what did they want, a ladder
for to get down to Jacob?” was the
unexpected reply,under which mama
found it quite time for her to go to

MURTOVfit CHICANERY.
Tlie Myalery of HU Mluloa to the Pacific
Const—California and Oregon n an IT.
act to South Carolina , Florida und f.oti
tslnna.
Chicago Times, November loth.]
Let ns preserve peace. There is no
use of boiling over the business.
There appear a good many ways of
escaping the dilemma which ruflian
ism. Granti3m and Kelloggism have
brought us unto. For example, the
mystery surrounding the sudden de
fection of California and Oregon from
Tilden is now beginning to make it
self apparent.
It wulbe remembered that so soon
as the election was decided In Ohio
and Indiana, the very morning after
the eiection Morton conspieuou&ly
quitted Indiana for California. His
ostensible purpose was to serve on
the committee authorized by the
Senate to investigate tho Chinese
commission. This belief he fostered
by his prompt departure after the
work of the election. It is now made
clear that the sudden flight was not
disgust aud despair which tho elated
ludianians fancied. The events of
the week prove that the October
elections were discussed by the Re
publicans beforehand and the agree
ment come to that if Indiana went for
Williams and Ohio was barely saved
to Hayes, there would be no hope of
New York and New Jersey. Could
Hayes bo elected without those
States? It was decided that with the
use of the troops North Carolina,
South Carolina and Louisiana could
be saved. Tbe vote of those States
with tho Pacific States would bring
Hayes four more votes than he need
ed.
Morton, who is an adept in electo
ral frauds, undertook to carry Cali
fornia and Oregon, as if Chandler
would attend to selected Southern
States. It will he remembered that
the Hayes journals persistently
claimed that he didn’t need New
York to elect him. Morton set to
work on this theory, and the results
of his adroit and unscrupulous
manipulation were seen on the day
following the election. California,
which had given the Democrat,
Irwin, a substantial majority for
Governor last year, was made to give
3,000 or 4,000 Bepublican majority;
and Oregon, which has been steadily
Democratic, was counted upon even
before a return by Morton to Hayes
as 1,500 Kopublican.
But all this fine scheming is going
for naught. By the curious rea
soning of the Republicans there will
be no redress for them should the
Democratic Governor of California
take the advantage of just the same
circumstances seized by Kellogg and
his kind to throw out the vote of
Louisiana. If the frauds are as
great in that State as California the
result can be made more decisive by
the rejection of the three Electoral
votes of that commonwealth now as
cribed to Hayes, though on no sub
stantial or explicit authority.
It is a humiliating and saddening
exhibition of Republican Govern
ment that methods of this sort are
ever discussed, let alone possible.
Were the real sentiment of the three
Southern States now in doubt undis
turbed, there would be no need of
measures so repugnant to the better
instincts of all Americans. It is the
toleration of such malefactors as
Kellogg, Packard, and their lawless
associates, which brings the nation
to the peril, at least, of imperfect and
unphilosophlc methods. It will be
no credit to the decency or forbear
ance of the party of Grantism that Mr.
Tilden takes the place he was elected
to in March next.

Tbe following is an extract from a description, published in tho Now York Tritmnt, by the wo!
known agriculturist. Solon Robinson:
All the farmers were of the “well to do” sort, and some of them, who havo turned their attention
to fruits and market gardening, have grown rich. The soil Is loam, varying from sandy to clayey,
and aurfaco gently undulating, intersected with small streams and occasional wet meadows, in
which deposits oi peat or muck are stored, sufficient to fertilize the whole upland surface, alter it
has been exhausted of its natural fertllitv.
It is oertaiuly ono of the most extensive fertile tracts, in au almost level position, and suitable
condition for pleasant farming, that wo know of this side of tho Western prairies. We found some
of tho oldest farms apparently just as profitably productive as when first cleared of forest fifty or a
hundred years ago.
Tho geologist would soon discover the cause of this continued fertility. The whole country Is a
marine deposit, and all through the soil we found evidences of calcareous substance., generally ln
tlm form of Indurated calcareous marl, showing many distinct forms ofancient shells, of the tertia
ry formation; and this marly substance is scattered all through tho soil, in a very comminuted
form, aud in the exact condition most easily assimilated by such plants as tho farmer desires to
cultivate.
