UXCOLVD BONK* ■ - .—in# AKHEBT or PASTIES SAID TO BE IMPLI CATED IS THE ATTEMPT TO STEAL THE REMAINS. Ohitag*Kvetting Journal.) Two of the men who were eugaged In the plot to steal the remains of ex- Presldent Lincoln from their tomb at Springfield, on the night of the 7th Inst., were arrested in this city last night. Their names are .Tack Mul lins, alias Terrence, who, In partner ship with ne Cornelius, keeps the "Hub” saloon at 234 West Madison street, and Jack Hughes, a notorious counterfeiter. They were arrested about nine o'clock last'night in the "Hub" saloon by Col. Elmer Wash burn and United States Detective Tyrrell-who have been at work on the case several weeks-assisted by City Detective Dennis Blmmonds and Detective McGinn, of Pinkerton’s Agehcy. Much credit for the job, however, is da© to a young man named L. C. Swegles. who is an at tache of the United States Secret Ser vice Department. Swegles is ono of the men employed to cultivate ac quaintance among law-breakers, and he has passed atriohg the “crooked” of this city for a horse-thief. He was set upon the trail of Jaok Hughes some time ago, and succeeded In ef fecting that worthy's arrest on a charge of counterfeiting, without giving himself away, and continued in the confidence of Hughesand other crooks who patronized the “Hub" up to last evening. Hughes, Mullins, Cornelius and a “well known con tractor,” (WHoSe "Hub Is not as- certainable at present) were the chief parties to the plot, and Swe gles and a friend of hfs named Brown were taken in to assist with the work which was to be dene without the active assistance of the contractor and Cornelius. Swegles played his part so well that he went With Mul lins and Hughes to the tomb and gave the alarm to Washburn,Tyrrell, and two of Pinkerton’s men, who wore on the watch for them, but the accidental discharge of one of the offloer*’ pistols frightened the men away just as they were ready to pick up the casket containing the remains and march off with it. The men, Mullins, Hughes and Swegles, beat a hasty retreat and escaped, and re turned to this city. Swegles still stuck to them, and finally saw them safely locked up at the Central Police-station last night. According to Swegles, the object of the robbery was first to secure the release of Burr Boyd, a notorious engraver of counterfeit money-plates, and secure a liberal reward for the return of the remains. The plan was to steal the metalic-casket with the remains in it and bury it near the scene of the robbery until negotiations for its return could be completed. It was arranged by Hughes andMullinsthat Swegles and his friend “Brown” should go to Calnada, and the former two partners would oonduct the ne gotiations ostenslblyas middle men, and they very magnanimously sug gested that In case it became neces sary to give someone up to punish ment, Swegles should have the privi lege of becoming a matyr, and that hla martyrdom should be toued down by high living while in jail, to which hecoulcLonly be confined one year, as the law of Illinois do not provide a heavier punishment for robbing graves. The Wo men at r- - ted refuse tffeoQVMse oiftfte subject, but such close truck has been kept of them that there is no doubt of their being the proper persons, and their conviction will be a compara tively easy matter. Mullins and Hughes will be taken to Springfield to-night, and there is excellent rea son to believe tney will soon be aton ing for their attempted outrage in the county jail of that county. cotton Supply, Demand and Price*. Ellison & Cos., the well-known Liv erpool cotton brokers, say in their last circular which lias just comd to hand: - The consumption ,of.Europe in 1876 and ’77 wift" probably “teach For Great Britain l.tfPjw.OOO .Vnd'for theOdtetineut ).o#Mlw,ooo -£= ■ Or a total f - which wa-hivt supply or . 2.!*,M1.000 igiSSSwIBR deficit of lllßuct the surplus held by Continental uL epiaaers BCSQb.ooo Leaves * ietdedcit of sS,<* ,000 or abbut 1 IS,OOO bales of about 400 potrtfls each. "With dull trade and un settled politics, onr estimated supply, as given TSbove, would probably meet the 'requirements of the world without flfsssitattng any ferious advance in prices; but what WObid be the effect of a general revival of trade, and a settlement of the SSst ernquestion? ' An uninterrupted succession of eommerciaP&nd financial disasters sirfee 1872—-hxthis country, in Amer ica, and on the Continent—has so thoroughly demoralized the public mind, and ftp completely soured the disposition of the commercial com munity, that the mere suggestion that we afe on the eve of a; bgjjer state of tiftn&s is almost universally pooh-hoolfea; nevertheless, We are strongly disposed to take a hopeful view of the future, and as prices are very low, and the prospective supply less than the proDable demand, we look for an advance in prices during the course of the season. Tho following is an extract from a description, published in the New York Tribun by the wel known agriculturist, Solon Robinson: All the farmers wore of the “well to do" sort, sod some of them, who have turned their attention to fruits and market gardening, have grown rich. The soil is loam, varying from sandy to clayey, and surface gently undulating, intersected with small streams and occasional wet meadows, In which deposits oi peat or muck am stored, sufficient to fertilize the whole upland surface, after it has been exhausted of its natural fertility. It is certainly one of the roost extensive fertile tracts, in an almost position, and suitable condition for pleasant farming, that we know of this side of the Western prairies. We found some of the oldest farms apparently just as profitably productive as when first cleared of forest fifty or a hundred years ago. The geologist would soon discover tho cause of this continued fertility. The whole country is a marine deposit, and all through the soil wo found evidences ol calcareous substances, generally in the form of indurated calcareous marl, showing many distinct forms of ancient shells, of the tertia ry formation; and this marly substance is scattered all through the soil, in a very comminuted form, and in the exact condition most easily assimilated by suen plants as the farmer desires to cultivate. - EVERYBODY SUITED.
