New York, November 24 —Hon. Abraham S. Hewitt has written the following letter to General Wade Hampton: National Democratic Committee, I New York, November 24, 1876. ) My Dear Sir: Your admirable ad dress to the people of South Carolina is the subject of universal commen dation here. In fact, the prudence, the forbearance and the self-controi of your people under the most exas perating provocations is beyond all praise. I can only trust that in the exciting situation in which you will find yourself next week, no outbreak will occur. It is almost too much to expect that there will be no indiscreet men in South Carolina who may provoke the collision; but nevertheless the providence of God has so far guided you and your people in all your diffi culties that your friends rest in calm confidence upon the wisdom and good fortune which have so far at tended your actions. 4 You may rest assured that your Northern brethren have consecrated themselves to the work of your de liverance, and will never ceuse their efforts until you are restored to that freedom wherewith you were made free by the labors and sacrifices and wisdom of our forefathers and your forefathers. God give you and your people all the wisdom and all the pa tience needed in this hour of trial and in this crisis of the destiny of our common country. We have full faith in the justice of the people of the United States, and we do not entertain a doubt of the final verdict which they will pass upon the occurrences of the last two weeks. This verdict will surely vin dicate their majesty and re-establish free government, upon a lasting basis. I have the honor to be, very re spectfully, your obedient servant, Aaram S. Hewitt, Ch’rm’n National Dem. Com. Gen. Wade Hampton, Columbia, S. C. What Doe* It Hern ? THE PENNSYLVANIA MILITIA ORDERED TO HOLD THEMSELVES IN READINESS TO MARCH. From the Harrlatmrg Ft<iot, Not. M.) We were surprised the other day at see ing in this city the warlike countenance of General William Russell, who has been assisting in the (fcosecution of the Repub lican campaign againgt the Democrats, with headquarters in Philadelphia. We now learn that General Russell has been called to his post in this city to promptly call to arms the militia of the Common wealth, for the purpose, no doubt, of pre venting the inauguration of Tildcn. The effect of his organizing powers is al ready seen in the active movements in progress at the Adjutant-General’s De partment and in other portions of the State. At Hollidaysburg the following orders have been issued : Headquarters Fifth Rkoiment, 1 National Guard of Pennsylvania, V iiOLUDAYSBtmO, Nsy. 14,1876. ) Special Order Nov. 9.—1. Comman ders will at once place tlieir respective commands in such condition that they will be ready to march at Bhort notice should orders be received to that effect. 11, Company drill will beheld at least three evening each week until further no tice. 111. Commands not already supplied with cartridges will send in their re quisitions immediately. By order of James F. M ill i ken. Colonel commanding Fifth Regiment. C. 8. Marks, Lieutenant and Adjutant How doits Are Utilized. It Is a fact not generally known that there Is a firm doing business in San Fran cisco who purchase the thousands of dogs slaughtered by the pound-master of that city, or that have been otherwise killed, for which they pay forty eents each. The caroasses are conveyed to their manufac tory in South San Francisco, where the skins are removed and the hides sold to tanners, the hair la taken off and sold to plasterers, the hide is tanned, made Into gloves and sold in the market. The de nuded carcass Is then put into a huge cal dron and boiled until the bones are easily separated from the flesh, when they are removed and sold to the sugar refineries, where they are ground into a fine powder and used to clarify 6ugar. The oil that rises to the surface of the boiling mass Is skimmed off and manufactured Into cod liver oil, and the remainder Is used for the purpose of fattening hogs.—Oakland (Cal.) Tho following 19 an extract from a doßCrlpUon, published 1b the New York Tritmnt, by the we! known agriculturist, Solon Robinson: All the farmers were of the “well to do” sort, and some of them, who have turned their attention to fruits and market gardening, have grown rich. The Boil is loam, varying from sandy to clayey, and surface gently undulating, intersected with small streams and occasional wet meadows, in which deposits oi peat or muck are stored, sufficient to fertilize the whole upland surface, after it has been exhausted of its natural fertiiitv. It is certainly one of the most extensive fertile tracts, in an almost level position, and suitable condition for pleasant farming, that wo know of this Bide of the Western prairies. We found some of the oldest farms apparently just as profitably productive as when first cleared of forest fifty or a hundred years ago. The geologist would soon discover the cause of this continued fertility* The whole country is a marino deposit, and all through the soli we found evidences of calcareous substances, generally in the form of indurated calcareous marl, showing many distinct forms of ancient shells, of the tertia ry formation; and this marly substance is scattered all through the soil, in a very comminuted form, and in the exact condition most easily assimilated by such plants as the firmer desires to cultivate.
