D. W, Aiken in the Rural Carolinian.]
Iu the Rural for August, 1874, I
published an experiment with red
oats, that several friends asserted
was an exception, because "it was
growing oats too cheap.” Another
year has come and gone. I have re
peated the experiment, succeeded
equally as well, and am pleased to
say I have witnessed a better success
with more than one of my neighbors.
Red oats can be grown at an expense
of 250. per bushel upon any ordinary
farm in the South, every such bushel
will weigh thirty pounds, and a
pound of oats will produce as much
muscle and fat as a pound of corn. I
have kept a horse for two years
without ever feeding to him an ear of
corn or a blade Of fodder, his daily
diet being shelled oats and straw, or
cut oats from the sheaf; he has
ploughed, wagoned, been hacked
about in a buggy, and ridden under
saddle, and there never was a time
ho was not ready and willing to do a
full share of work. Any land that
over I have seen in the South will
grow two bushels of oats where it
will grow one bushel of corn; each
farmer for himself can calculate the
cost of growing the two crops.
Red oats will yield more grain to
the straw, and more delicate straw
than any oats I have ever grown.
Sown in the fall, they will produce a
remunerative crop on good land,
even if frozen out during the winter
to a single stool to every square foot.
They are heavier than liny other and
have never been known to take the
rust. A few years ago I selected
eight adjoining acres, and on them
sowed a bushel to each acre of eight
varieties of oats. Some were entire
ly destroyed by the winter, some
were ruined by rust, and all but the
red oats were more or less damaged
by this parasite. Not even a blade
of red oats was touched, though the
acre was in the midst of the most
thoroughly ruiued. The time is upon
its when they should again be sown,
though they are remunerative if
sown at any time between this and
the first, of next March.
I prefer to sow in cotton laud
broadcast and plough in with three
or four sweep) furrows. This lays by
a cotton crop as well as sows a small
grain crop, hence a saving of half the
labor. It is cheaper to sow in the
cotton field even if postponed to Sep
tember or October, because cotton re
quiring clean culture the land is in
better tilth, and the fewer furrows
are necessary. Thojhands while pick
ing cotton during the winter will
trample upon the young sprigs, and
make them stool out better therefor.
Sheep will winter on oats in a cotton
field and never moiest the cotton till
they have eaten up the oats.
Tartar MupersUtlons.
While in Khokand, Schuyler be
came familiar with many Tartar
practices, religious and otherwise,
some of Which are extremely curi
ous, -
“For instance, I was shown how to
cut a melon. According to the Ko
ran, when an animal is killed for
foodi its throat must be cut so that all
the blood may-run out. By transfer
of ideas, the melon is treated In the
same way. First, its throat is cut,
that is, a small incision is made in
the end farthest from the stem ; then
its bead is put off by slicing off a
small piece; after that it is cut up
lengthways, and with one or two
dexterous turns of tire knife the flesh
is removed from the rind and cut in
to thin, small slices, which are push
ed out alternately by the knife.
When a mau drinks water, he should
iirst take one swallow slowly, while
repeating to himself the name of
Allah, and then take two swallows,
after Which he may gulp down
as much as he pleases.
When a person hiccoughs, it
is common to -say: ‘You stole
something from me.’ This is
supposed to bring good luck. If you
sneeze when I speak to you, it shows
that lam right. If a person sneeze
three times, it is very unlucky.
Yawning is a most sinful and danger
ous practice, and arises from an evil
place in your heart, which is getting
ready for the reception of a wicked
spirit. Mohammed never yawned;
for. when he was only five years old,
he was one day seized in the desert
by Gabriel, who pounced upon him
like a bird, and cut out the evil place
from his heart. If, therefore, you
yawn, you should always put up the
hand with the palm outward, so as
to ward off all the evil spirits that
will at once come to you. Among the
more puritanical folk, laughter also
is bad; and it is said that Hanify, one
of the famous Mussulman doctors,
lost half of Asia for Islam by laugh
ing. Whistling also is bad. If a hus
band whistle, something will happen
to his wife; and' if children whistle,
their father or mother will die.
Whistling is also supposed to bring
wind, and the Kirghiz frequently
whistle for that purpose. A buzzing in
one’s ears shows a man isdend, and a
prayer is always repeated. There is
a beautiful legend connected with
this. In heaven there is a tree, on
each leaf of which is written the
name of some soul, and what men
cal’ a buzzing in the ears is a rustling
of one of these leaves as it fails from
the tree. If the noise in your ears be
a ringing, as of bells, it is a Christian
soul whose leaf has fallen, and
who* is to die, and thus for
each faith the noise is different.
There is a curious belief abouta little
bird called the barlagatch. If, when
you first see this bird in the spring,
you dig a deep hole under the big toe
of your right foot, you will find a
coal. With this coal in your hand,
go and stand in front of a mosque,
bearing also a slim rod. You tnen
watch every one who passes, and at
last there will be a girl wearing a
large hat. You touch her with the
rod, and make her stop and go into
the Mosque with you, and you can
then obtain her hat, which will make
you invisible, and allow you to wan
der unseen wherever you please.”

tent medicine advertisement. If all the
dyspeptics would only hoe regularly
their number would be reduced amazing-

The following is an extract from a description, published in the New York Tribune, by the wel
known agriculturist, Solon Robinson:
All the farmers were of the “well to do” sort, and some of them, who have turned their attention
to fruits and market gardening, have grown rich. The soil is loam, varying from sandy to clayey,
and surface gently undulating, intersected with small streams and occasional wet meadows, in
which deposits of peat or muck are stored, sufficient to fertilize the whole upland surface, after it
has been exhausted of its natural fertility.
It is certainly one of the most extensive fertile tracts, in an almost level position, and suitable
condition for pleasant farming, that we know of this side of the Western prairies. We found some
of the oldest farms apparently just as profitably preductive as when first cleared of forest fifty or a
hundred years ago.
The geologist would soon discover the cause of this continued fertility. The whole country is a
marine deposit, and all through the soil we fouud evidences of calcareous substances, generally in
the form of indurated calcareous marl, showing many distinct forms of ancient shells, of the tertia
ry formation', and this marly substance is scattered all through the soil, in a very comminuted
form, and in the exact condition most easily assimilated by such plants as the farmer desires to
cultivate.
