Tuesday a fatal accident happened to a
negroboy named Harrison, at the widow

Harrison was driving the gin and in
some way got mixed up with the belting.
His head was caught between the belt
and a sill, and literally crushed to pieoes.
He was so badly disfigured as not to be
recognizable. Theginner knew nothing
of the accident until the mules stopped,
and he went below to insist upon the boy's
making them drive better. When he got
there he found the boy doad, and his
brains spattered on the oog wheel.

(live Your Child a Newspaper.
An exchange very appropriately says
that a child beginning to read becomes
delighted with a newspaper, because it
reads of names and things which are fa
miliar, and it will progress accordingly.
A newspaper, in one year, is worth a
quarter’s schooling to a child. Every fa
ther must consider that information is
connected with advancement The mo
ther of a family, being one of its head,
and having a more immediate charge of
chlldreu, should herself be instructed. A
mind occupied becomes fortified against
the ills of life, and is braced for any
emergency. Children amused by reading
or study are. of course, more considerate
and more easily governed.
We hope aliwho read this will carry
their paper home to their families, that
they may keep posted in the history of
their oountry. Those who do not take a
paper, should subscribe for one for their
children; for, while you can corno up town
and hear what is going on, they can not.

MoourCa Oxen Wall/.
The miiis!live nature of Mo/,arl, the
sweetewt of all musical composers, is well
known. The slightest discord produced
in him severe Irritation, and when en
gaged in musical composition his feelings
grew so Intense that he almost lost con
sciousness of anything going on around
him. The following story strikingly illus
trates this;
Mozart was engaged In arranging one
of the most beautiful airs In an opera he
wae composing, when the butcher called
for hla pay, which had long been due. In
vain his wife endeavored to attract the
attention of the rapid artist, who scrib
bled away, utterly unconscious of her
presence. She ran down stairs with tears
in her eyes, telling the butcher her hus
band could not bo spoken to, and that he
must come another time. But the man of
blood was not easily daunted; he must
have his bill settled, and speak with Mo
zart himself, or he would not send him
another ounce of meat He asoended the
stairs. Mozart, distinctly conscious that
something bad passed in his presence, bad
continued pouring the effusions of his
fantasia upon paper, when the foot
steps of tho butcher resounded In the hall.
His stick was at hand. Without turning
his eyes from tho sheet ho field his stick
against tho door to keep out Intruders.
But the steps were approaching. Mozart,
more anxious, hurried as fast as he could,
when a rap at the door demanded permis
sion to enter. The boautlful effusion was
In danger of being lost. Tho affrighted
composer cast a furtive glance at his
stick—it was too short. With anxiety bor
dering on frenzy ho looked around his
room, and a pole standing behind the cur
tain caught his eye; this he seized, bold
ing It with all Ills might behtnd the door,
writing like fury all the while. Tho knob
was turned, but tho polo withstood the
llrst effort. A pause succeeded. Words
were heard on the staircase, and the In
truders renewed their efforts a second
time. But the strength of the composer
seemed to increase with ills anxiety. Large
drops of perspiration stood on his fore
head. Stemming tho pole against his left
breast with tho force of despair, he still
kept out the visitors. He succeeded but
for a moment—the delightful air was
poured upon the paper—it was saved.
“Mr. Mozart," said the butcher—
" Halt! halt I’’ said the composer, seizing
the manuscript and hurrying towards the
piano forte. Down he sat, and the most de
lightful air that ever was heard responded
from the Instrument. The eyes of the
wifo, and oven the butcher’s, began to
moisten. Mozart finished the tune, rose
again, and running to tho writing-desk,
he filled out what was wanted.
"Well, Mr. Mozart," said tho butcher,
when tho artist had flnishod, "you know
I am to marry."
"No, Ido not,” said Mozart, who had
somewhat recovered from his musical
trance.
••Well, then you know It now: and you
owe me money for meat.
“I do,” said Mozart, with u sigh.
“Never mind,” said the man, under
whoso blood-stained coat beat a feeling
heart; “you mako me a fine waltz for my
marriage ball, and I will cancel the debt,
and let you have meat for a year to
“It is a bargain,!” cried the lively and
gifted Mozart; and down ho sat, and a
waltz was elicited from the Instrument
such a waltz as tho butcher had never
heard before.
“Meat for a year, did I say?” exclaimed
tho enraptured butcher. "No! one hun
dred ducats you shall have for this waltz;
but I want it with trumpets and horns,
and llddles—you know best-and that soon
too!”
“You shall have it so,” said Mozart, who
could hardly trust his ears; “and In one
hour you may send for it."
Tho liberal-minded butcher retired. In
one hour the waltz was set In full orchestra
music. The butcher returned, was delight
ed with his music, and paid Mozart his
one hundred ducats—a sum more splon
dld than ho hud ever received from the
Emperor for the greatest of his operas.
It is for this incident that lovers of har
mony are Indebted for one of the most
charming trifles, the celebrated Oxen
Waltz.-e. pleco of music still unrivaled.—

A Queer Fish.
Mr. Gill, oi Martin, Gillet & Cos., has
just returned from Japan, bringing with
him a beautiful and rare description of
fish—one never before seen alive in this
country, and which he has kindly loaned
the Aquarium for a short time. The pe
culiar features are several brilliant colors
and three distinct tails, all of which, the
Japanese claim, are the result of many
and successive years of cultivation and
breeding. A number of attempts have
been made to introduce this remarkable
fish into these waters, hut this is the only
instance in which it has ever proved suc
cessful. A tank suspended like a com
pass, to avoid the ship's motion, was es
pecially constructed, and then, notwith
standing tiie greatest care, attention and
watchfulness, out of eighty-eight only
seven survived the long Journey. Of the
remaining six Mr. Gill has taken such
great care that they have spawned, result
ing in fifty fry, exhibiting nil the pecu
liarities of the originals. It is the inten
tion of Mr. Gill as soon as he has suffi
cient stock, to donate some of them to
persons who take an interest in and who
will endeavor to raise them. Such per
sons may obtain them by addressing
Messrs. Martin, Gillet & Cos., Baltimore.
The one loaned the Aquarium is a mag
nificient specimen, exhibiting all the
several beautiful colors in perfection.
The fact of its never being seen outside its
native waters, together with the peeuliar
interest attaching to it from the manner
of breeding necessary to produce the triple
ace-like tails, renders it of deep impor
tance to naturalists and others, showing as
is it does how nature can he so subor
dinated to art as to produce the most
curious results. — Home Journal.

If the Republicans of South Caro
lina and Louisiana succeed in con
summating their frauds, they will
not only steal the national and State
Governments, but will also steal
three Senators in Congress.
The term of Robertson, one of the
Republican Senators of South Caro
lina, expires with this Congress, and
his successor will be chosen by the
incoming Legislature.
Now, if the State Canvassers of
South Carolina had obeyed the man
date of the Supreme Court, the Dem
ocrats would have had a majority
of one on joint ballot in the Legisla
ture; but by spurning the mandate
and throwing out tho returns from a
sufficient number of counties, the
Canvassers have given the majority
to the Republicans, who, if they can
complete their plot, will thus suc
ceed In stealing the Senator.
In Louisiana the term of West,
Republican, expires with the present
Congress. There is, in addition to
this, a vacant seat—the one Pinch
back claimed, but which a part of
the Republicans in the Senate would
not give to him because of thefraud
ulent character of the Kellogg Gov
ernment, through whose grace ho
was assigned to it.
There Is no doubt that at the recent
election the Democrats carried a
handsume mrjority of the Legisla
ture of Louisiana, and are therefore
entitled to the two Senators in Con
gress. But we take it for granted
that the Returning Board will put
through their conspiracy without
flinching, aDd while throwing out
enough parishes to give the electors
to Hayes, will take care that they
count in a Legislature that will not
hesitate to steal the two Senators.
As the outrages of these consplrit
ors accumulate in nnmber and grow
more and more atrocious in their
character, it might be imagined that
a portion of the Republicans in the
North* would hesitate to give
them their countenance. But wb arc
yet to see the first evidence of dissent
in Republican quarters from these in
famous proceedings, or hear the faint
est protest from that source against
t hese high crimes and misdemeanors.

A couple of cars loaded with gra|*es
raised !n Napa county, California,
were recently shipped East, a dis
tance of 3,000 miles. They were pur
chased at two cents per pound, and
the shipper will no doubt realize a
handsome profit. The cars are lined
with thick paper, and almost air
tight. At the front of the car is a
compartment which holds a ton of
ice, aud a fan revolving 1,800 times a
minute is attached to the axle and so
arranged that air is forced over the
ice and through a metalie cylinder
eight or ten inches in diameter
which extends the entire length of
the car and perforated with small
holes. Tho grapes are packed in
twenty pound boxes. A car holds
ten tons.
