It, diinsoH'* circus exhibited at Social
Ciiviohist Wednesday. A largecrowd
ns n matter of coursa, assetabipd
in tho towD, and benzine flowed fro*
ly. Tho inevitable result, of an over
dose of cheap wulekey is a row. It
is reported that a row ensued, and n
terrible and tragic one. The partic
ulars of the affair we hove been un
able to obtain lnauy reliable shape.
The first report t Mt reached Hie elty
was .that two whites and one
colored rnan were killed. Hub
sequent reports do not confirm the
kilting of the negro. A gentleman
who resides In Gaiocsvillo was In
Social Circle at the time, but did not
see the affray. He reports that two
white men were killed. Tho most
reliable report seems to bo that
one of tho Hardlns, of Kutlege,
either shot at or struck Dtck Smith,
of Jaspsr county. Smith drew his
pistol and killed Mark Hardin, and
was kimself killed by someone else.
The nffair created considerable ex
citement. We learn that none of the
attaches of the circus tfrere In tho

Scarcely with a parallel for llend
ishness and malice, in a civilized
country, whs tho attempt, a few
nights ago, to burn olive the two sis
ters and sons of Guu. Wade. Hamp
ton, the Reform Governor elect of
South CaroiiDu. Passengers from
Columbia acquaint its with the fol
lowing particular* of Ihe horrible
affair;
Gen. Wade Hampton, it seems, has
his home out in tho country, several
miles from Columbia, In which city
he was staying for some weeks past,
counseling with friends and watch
ing tho proceedings of the Heturnlng
Board, who had charge of tho elec
tion returns.
While thus engaged in the com
mendable effort to preserve the peace
and prevent bloodshed among the ex
cited factions at the State capital, his
home was reduced to ashes, and his
family escaped with none of their
effects and with barely their lives.
The act of the Incendiaries proves
not only a deep-seated malice and
revenge, but a cruelty of heart and a
flendishness ofpurpose that reminds
us of the practice of the heathenish
Turks ann tho wild savages of the
plains.
The dwelling was saturated with
kerosene, all around, with no avenue
left by which tho inmates could es
cape, and then the torch was applied.
Every one knows with what rapidity
fire will spread when fed by this com
bustible oil, and the persons who con
cocted tho hellish plot had no desire
but. to seo the Humes. Fortunately
none of them had retired, as it was
about nine o’clock, and they thus
were enabled to escape a most, awful
and cruel death.^ Observer-
