Adjusting ab ißinrißN. Keen fellows, thote insurance agents. XUere was au alarm of tire the other day, caused bya gas explosion in ibc ‘saloon’of Mr. Michael McGowan, at the North Knd. As soon as the excitement had quieted down a little Mr. McGowan started for the insur. ance office, where he had taken out a policy au his ‘shebeen’ and its contents. Soon after Michael left, a quiet-looking gentleman entered and interviewed Mrs. Mc- Gowan on the subject of gas. He was very severe; he thought the gas had been impro perly used; he doubted if the company would put pipes in there again, if so much damage was done. Mrs. McGowan wwalarmed. She knew that much of Mr. MHSowan'i business was transacted 'under the gas light,’ and the volubly protested: ‘Aity, sir, nv ye plaze; ts it the gas and the tire? Divil a harm have they done anyway, barrin’ Mike drivin’ the head of him thro’ the windy, hut mutiny* the lick he’a got whin he* ben out wid the j bye*. Burn, ia ill Nothing was burned but • Mike's ould coat. Aa fur the whisky, it wouldn't burn if you’d thfow-it on the fire. Damage, ia it? Wait till I get a drop o’ whitewaah the morrow, and divil a sign of a acorchye’ll see.’ Meanwhile Mike, with his head bound up and wearing a woful countenance, was watt ing at the insurance office. Presently the agent Arrived, and Mr. McGowan opened > his case at once. ‘Good mowin', Mr. Premium. I've jist dropped in for me imnrrence. tor. The bloody gas works, bad luck to ’em, bursted the atooffiing ahl out or the piper, and ait fire to me place, and trow’d me clean troo the windy, wid me head agin MuTpbyt Wall, aa kapes the grocer’* ahop, that came from county Cork, an’ knows me wall, barrin he'll sell a glaa* o’ whiaky on the sty, which, bein’ a grocer, is agin me rights.’ As soon as Mr. McGowan stopped lor wind, the Ifcent quietly inquired: ‘How much do you think your loss is, Mr. McGowan?’ ‘Well, 1 do not know, tot; what, wid me place busted, and me stock burned, me do thin’ destryed, me head bruk, to say nothin’ av the bluid on Murphy’* wall. I’m thinkin’ a matter o’ five hunder dollar* wud be squarin’ me.’ •Mr. McGowan,’ aaid the agent, draw ing a bank note from hia drawer, ‘I have been up to your place thia morning and seen what damage has been done, besides having the pleasure of an interview with Mrs. McGo wan. There is twenty dollars to pay fot a bucket of whitewash, a pane of glasa and your broken head, and don’t you ever try to play games on insurance people.” Mr. McGowan’* face lengthened inch by inch, and h square jaw dropped aa the in surance man continued. Finally, hia eye falling under the gaze of the other, he pock eted the money, signed the necessary paper*, and merely remarked: ‘So ye’ve had an interview wid the ould woman, have ye? Be gorral I’ll have one wid her meself agin 1 go back.’ Mr. McGowan waa true to his word, for he paid the twenty dollars to the clerk of the police court the next morning, for, as Mrs. McG. described it, ‘batin’ her like an ould carpet.’—From the Bottnn Commercial Bulletin. :*< * Do.vjt Platt on Calfb Cfshisg,—Caleb Cuahing, the Machiavalli of to-day, hav ing spotted Bos* Tweed in Spain, and procured the retuta of that emboliment of American Municipal Government without an extradition treaty, acents trouble at home, and ia here to have a hand in it. Caleb is back again, ia the same old, ill-fit ting, second-hand wearing-apparel—the same smooth, quiet face that is under such control one might aay of it as a clever Frenchman aaid of Talleyrand’s, that if he were violently kicked behind the person in front would not be made aware Of the assault from any change of tho diplomatic counte nance, and the inebriate Grant and the mud dled old Secretary of State are uneasy.
