The low lauds at the mouth of the Gang es wore the scene,on the night of the 31st Of last October, of one of the most terrible calamities known In history. The Ganges, the Bramapootra ami the Hoogly rivers are subject to a violent influx of the tide, which drives the river water back, heaps it up to a height sometimes of five feet, and overflows vast tracts of that rich low land at the numerous mouths of the Gan ges. But this last catastrophe far exceeds allothoraof the kind. On the night of October 31, when there had been no warn ing of danger, the waters of the Meghna river, formed by the junction of the Gan ges and the Bramapootra, suddenly rose to a height in places of twenty feet, and the whole mass was hurled upon the sleeping world. The islands of Dakkin Shahabazpore. Huttiah and Sundeep (the largest covering about 800 square miles,) with numerous smaller islands lying about the mouth of the Meghna, woro en tirely submerged, and the flood poured for miles over the flat mainland. Hundreds of thousands of people were roused from sleep by the wild roar of the rushing in vincible destroyer. There were no heights to which to escape; there was no time for parting words; one glance into the face of death, and myriads layslain by that over whelming flood. The low housetops of fered no safety, for they were swept away like chaff; only the thick groves of cocoa nut and palm trees, which are cultivated in every village, withstood the storm wave; the people who had climbed into the trees were saved, and only those. All that region of country is very fertile, and, in spite of its dangers, from the rivers, is densely populaicd. The three islands had a population of 340,000, ami three-quarters perished in the flood. In the districts of Bcckergungc, Noakholly and Chittagong, tbe loss of life is estima ted at 215,000; and the total estimate is nearly half a million. A few persons were carried, on the roofs to which a groat many were elingtng, a distance of ten miles from the Island of Sundeep to Chit tagong; but most of those swept away were never heard of again. All the cattle are drowned; all the boats are lost or de stroyed, and, as carriages of any kind are unknown in the delta districts, the survivors were deprived of all communi cation. Only one official survived in Dak kin Shahabazpore.the deputy magistrate; the other police and civil officers were all drowned. When the waters receded the reeking earth was strewn with corpses, and ail outbreak of cholera was feared. But at the last accounts there had been no pestilence. Of course there is great suffering and immense loss of property; but the survivors went bravely to work to repair the damage that was repara ble. The district of Backeegunge is a rice growing region, with a prosperous peasan try. The crops will be fair in spite of the injury done by the flood. The stores of wgraln, bleb had been thoroughly soaked, were dried in tbe sun, and cocoanuts are depended upon in a great measure for food until harvest. The Lieutenant-Governor, Sir Richard Temple, at once visited the district, and went from village to village making ar rangements for relief. The local govern ment took prompt and efficient measures for repressing the disorder and theft that Invariably follow In the wake of any great and sudden calamity. Sixty cen tres of relief were established, aud it will be a long time before relief ceases to be needed. The cause of the disaster, of its course rather, is not yet fuliy understood. The destruction of Shahabazpore and Hattiah came sweeping down the river from the north; that of the third Island, Sundeep, mid Chittagong came from the south. The throe theories' offered in explanation are, first, that the storm-wave formed in the bay, struck the shore near Chitta gong, wont north, aud then turned south ward ; second, that the wind blew back the waters of the Meghna, which re bounded with fury when the pressure re laxed, third, that there were too parallel storms, with a centre calm between them. It is only twelve years since a similar storm or cyclone destroyed fifty thous and persons in the same region, yet a crowded population lives there, has lived there trom time immemorial, and nothing can be done to prevent these pe riodical catastrophes. The country Is so Intersected by rivers that it looks, on the map, like a strip of fringe dipping into the bay of Bengal, and any adequate system of dykes seems impossible. Holland has learned the laws that govern the ocean, and the method of its warfare, and can make her defences and her conquests sure; but the swift and passionate fury of tropical seas and the capricious responses of defiance of tropical rivers have, up to this time, baffled the coolness and fore thought of scientific engineering. England has just drawn a long breath, os the danger of a terrible famine tP the presidencies of Bombay and Madras is over. Every possible preparation had been made for the time of suffering, when it should come, but the threatened territo ry was as large as England, and wide spread famine Is a frightful thing to deal with, but rain came on that parched west ern coast of Hindostan, and the peril was averted. For this latter and far more de structive calamity there could be no prep aration, for there was no warning of it.— Boston Advertiser. - - You can always find goods new and cheap, at the New York Store, as they re ceive goods daily. Tho following ia an extract from a description, published in the New York Tribune, by the wel known agriculturist, Solon Robinson: All the farmers were of the “wel! to do" sort, and some of them, who have turned their attention to fruits and market gardening, have grown rich. The soil is loam, varying from sandy to clayey, and surface gently undulating, intersected with small streams and occasional wet meadows, in which deposits of peat or muck are stored, sufficient to fertilize the whole upland surface, alter has been exhausted of its natural fertility. It is certainly one of the most extensive fertile tracts, in an almost level position, and suitable condition for ploaeant farming, that we know of this side of the Western prairies. Wo found some of the oldest fa rme apparently just as profitably productive as wheu first cleared of forest fifty or a hundred years ago. The geologist would soon discover the cause of this continued fertility. The whole country is a marine deposit, and all through tut soil we found evidences of calcareous substances, generally in the form of indurated calcareous marl, showing many distinct forms of ancient shells, of the tertia ry formation; %nd this marly substance is scattered all through the soil, in a very comminuted form, and in the exact condition most easily assimilated by such plants as the farmer desires to cultivate.
