During Christmas you will iiave plenty
of time to have your Photograph taken,
and it ean bo done at Giles Gallkby,
over Bedell’s store. To-morow go there
and sit for a picture. The object in
having a picture taken Is to get a
oorrect likeness,'and this can be done by
going to Mr. Giles Gallery. He has re
moved here, and has fitted up an elegant
gallery for the reception of the photo
graphic public. Ills specimens show for
themselves, arid all he asks is simply a
call, and he will take care of the balance.

Mr. Challln has all of the latest novels,
and in addition has the handsomest of
family Bibles. A Bible, well bound nnd
handsomely printed, is an acceptable
present to one’s father or mother.
Juvenile and Toy Books are scattered

Go to-day and see Chaffin, and make a

I.AYFIEI.U AXD SANTA
have evidently formed a conspiracy and
made headquarters at Laylleld’s store.
We judge this from the appearance of
things, for no store In the city has more
real comforts to tho little ones, and the
more aged, than i<ay(lekl presents. Toys
by tho cart loads, and Fireworks until you
cannot rest, are for sale. If you want
neither Toys. Dolls, Confectionery or Fire
works, surely you want the best of Broad
and Cakes. The Cakes are plain or iced,
and the Bread Is baked Fresh every day.
Times are very dull, and money is very
scarce, so to make the leost money go the
farthest, we advise a visit to Laylleid's.
BUY A irSOY,
Or if you don't want one for yourself get
a basket Phnston for your wife, and let her
have a chance to ride whenever she de
sires.
Don’t impose upon your mules any lon
ger, and force them to draw that old wag
on, but go and see Mr. T. K. Wyune and
get anew wagon, cheap.
Plenty of carriages, buggies, wagons
and harness for salo at cost, at Wynne's
Emporium. Call and sec them before you
buy, for he can, and will, sell cheaper than
any one.
N'ror AND EKAD THIN,
and learn what you ought to know, that
Charlie Heyman's
OLD RELIABLE
is still in the field, and during Christmas
wants to see all of their old friends.
Heyman has the best of Champagne
Wine, Sherry and Rum. He is prepared
to furnish Dining parties the very best in
the city. Heyman's Bar and Restaurant
will be open during Christmas all the
time, and It is supplied with all the delica
cies of the market, aud the finest Liquors
and Cigars.

This popular Jewelry establishment is
in full blast, and has on exhibition every
species of Jewelry, Silver ware and Parlor
ornaments. The latest novelties In Dia

hard times. What more beautiful pres
ent for a young lady, than a Lockot, Ring
or set of Jewelry. If you would make
your married lady friend happy, give her
one of their blegant Clocks, that she may
know what hour the head of the family
arrives, and thus put an end to his saying
"it Is about ten o'clock.”

something entirely suitable for a present.
Gentlemen who desire to present their

ATCOWOEIY'I.
1 Going into Cowdory’s, we found Ids
I crockery establishment flHeld, not only
j with customers, but also with Christmas
goods. Time was when china was raro
and Liverpool ware everywhere. But
now china is moderately ehoap, and tho
shelves of tho “china-shop” are graced
with the most lovelyspecimons of art in
figures and pictures of exquisite coloring.
His Btore, which Is one of thelnrgestin
tho city, was well filled with all manner
of crockery, and while there we saw in
prospective many a wife’s heart gladden
ed by the purchase of her Christmas toa
set. a porcelain vase for her mantle, or a
set of Bohemian glass ware.
His glass and china ware is of the latest
designs and coloring. Ills Imported goods
arc ol the finest texture and finish, and
his prices are extremely moderate. By
pricing some of his goods, we solved the
problem why such a run had been made
on this “china-store”
WELL* .fc eUKTIN' SHOE HOUSE.
The wet weather yesterday drove us
into the old reliable Shoe house of Messrs.
Wells * Cubtir to get something to
protect us from the mud. We found no
trouble In getting just what we wanted;
and wo believe that wifi be the experience
of every one who goes there to purchase
shoos. Theirs is the largest and com
pletes! stock wo have ever seen in Colum
bus, embracing all tho elegant novelties
for dross, as well as tho substantial grades
for tiio streets and for plantation wear.
Tho School Shoes, for Girls and Boys,
especially attracted our attention—being
neat in style, and stout nnd strong for
service. Tho proprietors informed us t hat
they have customers all over the country
—even in Texas—to whom they send
shoes by Express. Atlanta and Macon,
too, have citizens who can only be suited
to shoes by Wells & Cnms. VVe could
easily account for all this, for we know
those gentlemen nro so thoroughly ac
quainted with the Shoe business in all Its
details, that they understand whut t o have
made and how to have it made.
Next year they will try the exclusive
Cash system.
CONRAD LINCK
keeps the best Bar and Restaurant in the
city. Already he has won for himself a
reputation as the best caterer in the city,
and during Christmas proposes to keep
It up. At any unit all hours during the
coining week his Bar and Restaurant will
be open, and all that tho local and foreign
markets can furnish will be served at his
table.
Li nek's bottled Beer received the first
premium utthe Centennial. Go there and

THE SINGER SEWING MACHINE.
Of all the contrivances that have been
devised to relieve the housewife of one of
her greatest troubles, ami the killing
wear and tear of constant needle work, the
Sewing Maehine is the most wonderful-
And the most wopdortul of all the various
patents of these Machines is tho celebra
ted "Singer,” The many thousands of
these Machines scattered over every
part of tne civilized world, form an army
of witnesses to their superiority that can
not be questioned. Every household
almost testifies to their merits, and a
large proportion of the garments worn in
our daily walks prove their extensive use.
No other Maehine has taken so many
prizes at so many fairs, where tests were
made—for no other Machine possesses so
many points of excellence. Scarcely a
stitch that can be made by the nimble lin
gers of the most skillful lace worker, is
too Intricate for tills wonderful Machine.
Now get your wife one for a Christmas
gift. You can’t please her better, or pre
sent an article that will give half as much
satisfaction. See the agent to-day nnd
order a machine, for if you have not tho
cash, the Company will let you pay for it
in Installments.
Mr. Holt Is tho Agent In this city, and
a more obliging gentleman Is hard to

WILLIAMS’ ART GALLERY.
one of tho most attractive places during
the Clirletmas, in fact nt any and all sea
sons of tho year. In Columbus, is the
Drawing Rooms of G. T. Williams' Art
Gallery, over Dr. Carters' drug store. It
is a treat to go there. You can spend an
hour very plesantly and profitably in ex
amining his varied and superb collections
of Photographic Art Pictures. He
charges nothing for looking, being al
ways glad to have any one visit him and
examine his collection. If you should
want your picture taken in the highest
style of art, he can do it, and at figures
that will surprise you in their smallness.
He dees not claim to be the best artist in
tho world, but having had twenty-one
years practical experience in the business,
and during this time having kept up with
all the improvements in his art, ho feels
confident ho can satisfy the most fusti
dious.
We cannat imagine a more appropriate
Christmas present to a loving parent or
absent friend tnan an elegant photograph
of yoursolf taken by Mr. Williams.
W. H. ROBARTS A CO.
You are walking around for a Christ
mas present for your wife, and you don’t
know exactly what will suit her best.
Take our advice and go to Bobarts' and
get one of his Stoves. Your wife will be
delighted, and feel a load lifted from her
shoulders in worrying with a cracked and
smoking stove. They are Cheap, and
what is better, are durable.
Christmas is a good time to replenish
the kithon aud house. At Roberts you
will find the brightest of Tinware, and
many articles of household furniture al
most indispensable.
AT STRUPER'S OLD STAND
can bo found a select stock of Toys and
Gandies.
Mrs. Kirby has charge, and invited the
public to call. Ladies can find there Oys
ters and Coffee, fixed up to suit them.
MARK BRADFORD
wants to soli you a set of new Harness as
, a Christinas gift for your horse. He has
j a lot of Rubber Door Mats, School Batch
i els, Ladles’ Traveling Satchels and any
! number of Trunks, All for sale cheap.
JNO. McGOUGH & CO.
Tills old established house Is beforothe
public still for their trade. By their strict
integrity, and attention to tho wants of
their customers, thoy enjoy a reputation
second to no house in Georgia. This
Christmas they desire to sell more goods
than ever, and with a view of pleasing
their customers and making their store
attractive, they have recently ordered a
lot of Dry Goods especially adapted to
the Christmas trade. They are therefore
prepared to give the best of bargains in
all lines of Dress Goods and Dry Goods.
You cannot please your wife or auy of
your lady relations, better than giving
them an elegant Dress, a pair of Kid
Gloves or a set of furs. They have the
prettiest of Shawls, while the various no
tions usually kept in a dry goods store
are complete. Give your wife a now set of
table linen, and she will be happy. All
these goods you can get at McGough’s
for the next few days at prices that can’t
fail to satisfy you. You want something
of this kind, so go to McGough’s and get
It.
DRY GOODS FUR THE MILLION.
Mr. M. Joseph, at his Palatial store,
west side of Broad street, is most bril
liantly Illustrating the DRY GOODS
TRADE of Columbus. It is astonishing
to witness tiie immense piles of goods
that he daily disposes of. Almost every
conveyance that leaves tho city—whether
steamboat, railroad train, wagon or
pleasure carriage, carries bales, packages,
pieces, or bundles of goods from Joseph's.
Tho people of the country all around—far
and ncar- as well as those in the city,
have been convinced that no house in all
this Whole section offers superior induce
ments or superior goods; hence the ever
lasting ru6h that is observable to get to
his counters, by those in search of hand
some goods and low prices, llis stock is
a marvel of completeness - scarcely an ar
ticle needed to make It perfect. Call for
what you will and it appears before you
as if by magle. The finest fabrics seem
as abundant as tiio most staple goods,
and frequently tho price is but little high
er. And then Mr. Joseph has a staff of
••list ant* that, can seldom he'equaled.
Messrs. Frampton. Peacock and Allen in
the general sales depart ment, are all gen
tleman of experience In the trade and
widely known as excellent and obliging
salesmen.
The Ladles’ Department hna proved a
success far beyond its early flattering
promise, for it has supplied to the ladies
just the Department that thoy had long
felt u want of, but of the convenience of
which they have but recently been mjde
acquainted. This department is attended
by ladies who ore thoroughly conversant
with ajl its details and mysteries. In a
word, the Dry Goods establishment of M.
JOSEPH is a credit to the city, and It fully
deserves the large patronage it is daily
receiving. Ho invites a careful inspec
tion of his stock, ami defies competition.
LeGRAND WRIGHT
Invites the public to call to-day and du
ring Christmas, and cover their hoads
witli his new Hats. He bought them to
sell, and from the cheap prices ho is* ask
ing for them he wilt succeed. In addition
to his regular stock, he has ordered a
new lot, among which can be found the
following beautiful and stylish Hats:
Seal Brown, Childrens’ Seal Brown.

Fur Caps, Scotch (Japs.
Besides a full assortment of Wool Hats,

THE NICEST THINGS OUT.
If there is anything that makes a man
look more contented, and feel really more
comf rtuble than a handsome Dressing

with Ids family, we would like to get it.
Thornton A Acer have the very thing,

worn your old ones long enough, so go to
Thomas* Prescott’s and get fitted in one
of their new suits. Take your wife by

If you dont do it,wo advise all wives to go
to Thomas & Prescott's and order a suit,
and tako their husbands by surprise by
having them ready for him to don early
Christmas morning. The weather is
halmy now, but cold weather is coming
on, and you will need an overcoat. Take

If so, let everybody who owes her come
up this week and pay their bills.
T. T. EDM ENDS.
We visited yesterday, on our Christmas
jaunts, the elegant Furniture Store ofT.
X. Edmunds, where we found a most ele
gant assortment of Furniture, Fancy
Chairs, Lounges and everything else that
can bethought of In the furniture line.
In these hard times It is true economy
to buy a Christmas gift, it matters not
what it costs, that Is not perishable, but
that w ill last and bo of use for years. To
those who do not consider that house fur
niture comes under the head of Christmas
presents, we would suggst the propriety of
commencing tho new year with new
furniture entire, or at least with such ad
dition to this year’s as the wife may deem
necessary. To say that Edmunds sold
goods economically, would be almost as
superfluous as to ask a starving man it
hungry. Go there and get your
little boy a velocipede, and your little girl
a nice chair.
< Sirimuia* Gilt,
Go to-morrow to Linck’s, at the Mer

The \p*t Hutiiiernd,
We, along with the rest of tho lovers of
fun and frolic, are heartily glad to know
that, next month, we shall havo our an
nual Masquerade. Nothing, probably, in
tho line of entertainments for the young,
elicits half the interest, or “pans out” half
tho fun, that a really well-managed Ball
does. Tho last, masked ball given the pas
season, received many deserved compli
ments. This one, under the management
of the same Committee, will not fall one
whit short of Its predecessor. Costumes,
elegant and new, will be present-and, as
usual, every accessory will be perfect.
The young people are already on tiptoe
for the day to arrive.
Tin Horns.
Atlanta, Augusta and Savannah have
ordinances against tin horns, but Colum
bus has none, and all of the young boys
are invited to meet at this office, Monday
morning and join our band. Matt
G’Brion will doubtless be elected captain
of the brigade, while a resolution of
thanks will be voted Harris of the Omsli
tution for his manly defense of the
tin horn brigade. Wo trust to-morrow
will find him restored to his family, and
not In tho possession of a big “perlice"
for tooting his own horn.
Columbus boys are at liberty to blow
their own horns.
DURING THE CHRISTMAS HOLI

Mayor’* Court.
A gentleman, for being drunk and run

Another friend, who was forced Into a
combat with a negro, and in which en
counter the negro came out second best,
was discharged.
The Court adjourned for the Christmas
holidays. “Joe Brannun” respects the
frailties of the male persuasion during
Christmas, and we are inclined to believe
he will bo light with those who take too
much of Link’s artillery punch.
