This District embraces the counties of Muscogee, Harris, Chatta hoochee, Marion, Schley, Macon, Talbot and Taylor. Dlcktiu* P§p It Is a hitherto unpublished fact (says the New York Nun) that Charles Dickens, when coming through France once by rai from Marseilles to Paris, made a very abortive attempt at a practical joke. At Lyons a quarter of an hour was allowed for dinner, and Dickens fooled the passen gers out of their dinner by collecting around him all the waiters and so confus ing them by garbled Frenoh, English and Italian, that by tho time they had extri cated themselves from the loudly queru lous Englishman, who pretoaded to have some grievance against them, the bell was clanging for “all aboard!” Episcopal festival. Yesterday noon the Episcopal Church gave their regular Sunday School dinner and festival to the Sunday Sohool. They did not have a Christmas treo, with toys and presents, but a genuine dinner, with everything to tempt the appetite of the young ones. A sumptuous dinner was served, at which all had a lively time After the dinner was over, over one hun dred and fifty packages containing all kinds of things, wore distributed to the Sunday School scholars. Although a damp disagreeable day, a large crowd woe-in attendance. Clearing Out male. Gordon A Cargill ordered a large lot of goods for Christmas. Chrletmas is almost gone, and they have still a quantity on hand, so if you want the best of goods cheap, you had better go there and exam ine the goods and prices. They haw a large lot of lace curtains which they bought expecting to realise a handsome profit. They find the market dull, and therefore propose to sell at a loss to make room for other goods. Go there and get your lace curtains at your own price. To those who have been shivering In a thin suttof summer clothes they invite to take at their own price, a complete pat tern of a warm business or dress suit. So don’t feel cold any longer, but get a good warm suit Don't forget it, but go there to-day, and take your choice before they are all sold. They mean business, so If yew mean business and reaUy want a suit, you ean’t fail to be satisfied In quality and price. , , For anythin* In Groceries, Provlslene Grain, Ac., at “rock bottom,” prices call on J. One Woman and Three Children Drowned. A WI I.E, HUUNK AND WAtiOM I.OST, The Hurvlvors Barely Escaped COWIBBK CHEEK TUB SCENE OP THS DISAB - A day or two ago a frightful accident oc curred near Warrior Stand, on tho Cowl koe creek, under the following circum stances: Two men, named Thomas and Elijah Gore, with their families were returning from Harris county to Mr. J. M. Russell’s plantanlon. One was driving a horse, and the othera mulo. When they reached the bridge over Cowlkeo creok, the timbers In tho middle of tho creek gave way, and they were precipitated into the creek. It was as DABK AS MIDNIGHT. and they were In a dense swamp. Tho cries of the drowning were heard by each other but It was so dark they could render no assistance. The creek was consider ably swolen, by the recent heavy rains, end it Is a wender thst all were not drowned. The party consisted of these two men, their wives and four children. Out of this number one woman and three chil dren were drowned. The others barely escaped with their lives, for after extri cating themselves from the creek, they were lost In the swamp, and came near freezing to death. Everything they pos sessed was lost Roth the mule and horse were drowned, and the wagon bro ken to pieces. Our inforroantdld not know upon whose place they resided before they left Harris oounty, nor from what part of the county they came. A BKTUBN HOME. Xheae people were returning to the neighborhood they left three years ago. The two men were brothers, and ran away with their wives, who were two sisters, and carried them to Harris to get out of the reach of the old man's shot gun. The old man had relented, become reconciled, and wanted them to return to his home, anil they were on their way. The bodies of the drowned were recov ered some distance below where they were drowned. Beautiful lino of Silk Handkerchiefs at dec2B 2t Kyle’s. A New rotten Mill In Columbus. Mr. W. L. Clark, superintendent of the Mobile and Girard Railroad, arrived in the city yesterday, and is stopping at the Screven House. Mr. Clark is here for the purpose of arranging for the transpor tation of the machinery for the new cot ton factory just erected in Columbus by the Eagle and Phoenix Manufacturing Company, and is the third mill owned by that well-known and ably-managed cor poration. The mlil will be the largest in the United States, and will have a manu facturing capacity equal to the two fac tories now In operation. It will be espec ially devoted to the manufacture of checks and stripes, and will have 20,000 spindles. 800 looms and 160 carding ma chines, aggregating 900,000 pounds in weight. The greater part of tho machin ery is being made in Biddeford, Maine, and portions ot it In Philadelphia and New York. The machinery Is expected to arrive within the next six weeks, and the mill, when in operation, will use twcuty bales of cotton per day and give employ ment to seven hundred hands. One grati fying feature in the enterprise Is the that tho managers expect the increased demand for their goods to be fully equal to their enlarged facilities.— Savannah News. The Southern Dry Goods Trade. Fhlladolphis Correspondence of the New York Bulletin.) We had occasion in a communication at the opening of the fall season to refer to the brightened prospects for a healthy trade tor the business season now closing. We regret that the “election muddle" has had the effect to seriously interfere with the fulfillment of these hopes. More especially has this been tho case in the trade with the South; all branches of manufacturers have naturally looked to this quarter as a targe market for their products, and unquestionably the de mand from it has grown with the develop ment of their homo Interests since the close of the war. But the disturbed con dition of Southern finances has led our merchants to pursue a most conservative policy in extending their lines of Southern credits, and now the uncertainty of their political future has for the present almost completely paralysed the trade. This is seen in the preparations being mado for a late spring business. Lines of goods strictly adapted for the Southern markets are in light supply, and staples for which the first demand oomes from the South are much short of their usual showings, manufacturers proforing to await the Western and home demand before putting on their full foroe. The daily edition will on week dayi be a nheet of four pages, and on Sun day* a sheet of eight pages, or 50 broad columns; while the weekly edit on will be a sheet of eight pages of the same dimensions and character that are already familiar to our friends. The Sun will continue to be the strenuous ad vocate of reform and retrenchment, and of the mibatitiuion of statesmanship, wisdom and integrity for hollow pre-knee, imbecility and fraud in the administration of publie affairs. It will contend for the government,of toe people by tho people and for the people, aw opposed to government by fraud* in tho b.tUot-box and in the counting of vot s, enfarofcd by military vio leace. It will endeavor tp supply its read, rs—a body no* now iar from a million souls—with the most careful, cornet*; and trustworthy account* of current events, and will employ for this pur pose a numerous and carefully selected staff of reporters aud correspondents. Its reports from Washington, especially, will be full, accurate and fearless: and it will doubtless continue to de serve and enjoy tbe hatred of thoae who thrive by plundering tho Treasury or by usurping what the law does not give them, while it will endeavor to merit the confidence of the public by delud ing the rights of the people against the encroach ments of unjustified power. Th-price of the Daily Sun will bo 55 cents a month or $6 50 a year,* post-paid, or with the Sunday edition $7.70 a year. The Sunday edition alone, eight pages, $1.20 a year, post-paid. At one dollar a year, postage paid, the expenses of paper and printing are barely repaid; and, considering the size of the sheet and the quality of its con tents, we are confident the people will consider The Weekly Sun the cheapest newspaper pub lished in tbe world, amf we trust also oi e of the very best.
