Mr. Steel preached on tem perance. Ue gave soma startling statis tic# on the subject. There are in this country four liquor shops to every church, six liquor dealers to every teach er,—Sixty millions of dollars are spent to support tho gospel, one hundred millions to carry on education, against seven hun dred millions spent for whiskey.—Whis key gives us annually six hundred thou sand drunkards, one hundred ntid thirty thousand widows and orphans, and sixty thousand hopeless graves. Mr. Steel quoted figures to show that Philadelphia receives fourteen cents profit on the li cense of the trade, and pays one dollar for the crime it produces. He thought the traffic aud the use of ardent spirits ought to be prohibited upon strictly eco nomical principles, not to mention relig ion, and urged his people to use their in fluence in favor of reform. Disinterested New Tear Advice. Work is your true remedy. If misfort une hits you hard, you hit something else hard; pitch into something with a will. There’s nothing like good, solid, absorb ing, exhausting, work to euro trouble. If you have met with losses, you don’t want to tie awake and think about them. You waut to seep—calm sound sleep- aud to eat your dinner with an appetite. But you cau’t unless you work. If you say you dou’t feel like work, you go loafing all day to tell Dick and Harry the story of your woes, you’ll lie awake and keep your wife awake by your tossing, spoil your temper aud your breakfast next morning and begin to-morrow feeling ten times worse than you do to-day. There are some great troubles that on ly time can heal, and perhaps some that never can be healed at ail; but all can be helped by the great panacea, work. Try It, you who are afflicted. It is not a pat ent medicine. It has proved its efficiency slnoe first Adam and Eve left behind them, with weeping, their beautiful Eden. It Is on efficient remedy. All good phy sicians in regular standing prescribe it in eases of mental and moral disease. It op erates kindly as well as leaving no disa greeable sequel, and we assure you that we have taken a large quantity of it with most beneficial results. It will cure more oomplalbts than any nostrum in the ma teria medics, and comes nearer being a ’cure all" than any drug or compound of drugs to the market. And it will not sicken you if you do not take it sugar coated. To Cnwlf Candidate*. Bring in your orders for Tickets. Don’t wait until the last day.
