Columbus, Ga., January 5,1877.
To the Honorable Board of Omtrot,
Columbus Fire Department:
Gentlemen—in accordance with my
duty as Chier Engineer, 1 take pleasure In
presenting this my report for the year
ending December 31st, 1870:
The whole number of ularms for 1876
have been twenty-five; eleven were false
and fourteen were for fires. The total
alleged loss of property being $45,529; and
insurance on same s34,ss6—leaving loss to
property holders $10,973.
My acknowledgments are due to the
members of this Board for valuable ad
▼toe, and to the officers of the various
companies for assistance at fires. To their
efforts, sustained by the noble men under
their command, Is due the efficient man
ner In which the operations of the De
partment have been conducted; all of
which merits my warmest commendation.
“Respectfully, your ob’d’t serv't,
W. H. Williams,
Chief Engineer.
A committee consisting of the Foreman
of each company and the Chief of the De
partment, was appointed to consult and
ascertain the best remedy for the defect
In the fire alarm bell; whether it will be
best to elevate it more, to move it to some
other point or to substitute some other
method of alarm, and to report.
The board elected the following officers
for the current year:
W.II. Williams, Chief.
C. A. Ethsredge, Ist Assistant.

A (illy Ordinance.
At a recent Mayor’s Court, bis Honor
the Mayor lined a party for throwing
trash Into the street on a day other than
that set for the purpose, which is Thurs
day. Since that occurrence housekeepers
have been quite at a loss touching the re
quirements of the law on this point. For
their benefit wo give the law, as printed in
tho City Ordinances. On page 21, section
4, of tho City Ordinances Is tho following
clause:
“No person shall deposit, or cause to be
deposited, In any street, public or private
alley, any filth, garbage, ashes, rubbish,
or any such thing, under the penalty of
being fined not less than $5 nor more than
S2O; and each day any such deposit re
mains, shall boa distinct offence.”
On page 43, In the ordinance In relation
to streets, section 2 reads as follows:
“No person shall throw or deposit or
cause to be thrown or deposited In auy
street or sidewalk, any soot, ashes, ma
nure, oyster shells, nor any filth, offal, pu
trid or stinking water, or any putrid or
offensive matter, nor tho trimmings or
primings of any poisonous plant, tree or
vegetable whatever, at any time; nor
shall any rubbish or the sweepings of any
premises bo placed In sny of the streets,
except upon such days as may be desig
nated by the Muyor and Council, for tho
purpose of having the same removed by
the city carts."
The law is very plain as to the duty of
house-keepers, though the latter section
is contradictory, forbidding positively
that any soot, ashes, manure, Ac., at any
time shall be thrown Into the streets, and
at the same time providing that tho carts
shall remove said rubbish. How oan the
carts remove It, if the law forbids it being
thrown Into the streets 7
Ths council which passed this latter
section no doubt Intended to forbid the
throwing out into the street at any time
trimmings or pruninga of any poisonous
plant, tree or vegetable matter, and to re
strict the throwing of all other rubbish
Into tho streets to certain days. The law
is a good one so construed and should be
enforced, though thero Is one article
which should not be forbidden, we refer
to ashes. In lots where the houses are
closely built, and especially if such houses
be of wood It is more dangerous to force
the owners to keep their ashes than it is
to permit them to empty them into the
middle of tho street. Such rubbish as
ashes thrown Into the street can do no
possible harm and instead of littering the
streets will really do good If the people
will put themselves to the little trouble
required to direct their servants to empty
the ashes Into the boles and washes which
by the way are quite numerous ju6t now,
owing to the continued bad weather. If
the house-keepers will possess their souls
in patience until the next meeting of coun
cil an effort will be made to have the word
ashes struck from the section above writ
ten. * * •

email Vexations.
Great troubles befall comparatively few
individuals in this life, but all of us have
our small vexations, and most of us have
mors of them than fairly falls to our lot;
and it is of these LITTLE, outside annoy
ances that wo uow feel disposed to com
plain. Two, only, will be ventilated this
morning.
The first is the allowing leaky awnings
to remain over the sidewalks. In some
parts of the city they are almost au intol
erable nuisance. When It rains they leuk,
and beneath them it is frequently worse
for tbe pedestrian than In the middle of
the street. The dripping water cuts holes
in the walks, in which it stauds until it
forms mud—and then It Is In part kept
from drying by the very awnings thut
caused the trouble.
In the light of day wc can see how to
avoid these places, and can walk around
them—though to do it. It may be neces
sary to go into the street. But In the
darkness of these moonless nights we are
helpless, and must flounder through as
best we can. And it is right here that our
other troubo ruffles us; it is tbe dimness
ot the public lamps. The lamps are far
apart, and the glass ts kept so wt-washed
that they absolutely add to tbe difficulty
of comfortable locomotion by partially
blinding ns.
We hope the Police—for they, too, have
to walk the streets at night—will report
these matters to the proper Council
Committees, and aid us in having them
remedied.

These deservedly celebrated and popu
lar Medicines have effected a revolution
in the healing art, at and proved the fallacy
of several maxims which have fur many
years obstru ted the progress of medical
science. The false supposition that “Con
sumption Is incurable” deterred physi
cians from attempting to Hnd remedies
for that disease, and patients afflicted
with it reconciled themselves to death
without making an effort to escape from
a doom which they supposed to be una
voidable. It Is now proved, however, that
Consumption can be cured, and that it has
been cured in a very great number of
co-es (some of them apparently desperate
ones) by Schenck’s Pulmonic Syrupalone;
and in other cases by the same medicine

Tonic and Mandrake Pills, one or both,
