Terry Required to Vive a Thousand
Dollar Rond. *
The trial of Terry, for complicity in the
murder of Lyon, took plaoe at Seale, Ala.,
on Thursday. Tho evidence, as wo havo
before stated, was altogether circumstan
tial, but was of so strong a character as to
induce the court to bind him over for a
hearing before the Circuit Court at next
term. The bond was put at SI,OOO, but up
to yesterday he had failed to give it, and
was then In jail.
Our Cation Mills.
We believe all tho factories have, in the
last few days, been obliged, in sympathy
with the raw material, to advance their
prices. Cotton has made a decided, and
we presume a very permanent advance.
It is pleasant to know that every one
of these mills have orders equal to all
their production and In many cases they
are sold ahead.
Comparatively manufactured goods
are yet low and are susceptible of other
advances before they are in keeping with
prioe of cotton. The production of the
No. 3 Eagle A Phonix would now find
ready sale; as this corporation’s popular
goods seem in unusual demand. Speed
the day of Its completion, we say; our pop
ulation, our trade and our city generally
will be bettered just that much. These
bulwarks of the South ore doing wore to
make us respected and feared than ever
did our best bayonets. Columbus is just
ly proud of the share she has contributed.

ANOTHER SUCCESS.
The Times has made another success
ful bid for work. On Monday night last,
we put In the lowest bid for the publish
ing and job work of the city, for the year,
and obtained the contract. Yesterday the
County Commissioners openod the bids
for tho county printing for the year, and
our bid being the lowest we had the work
awarded to us. In both Instances our bids
were very low, but we wanted tho work
and were willing to do It at a very low
Ugure. As we said a few days ago when
speaking of tho city contract, we have a
working office and are prepared to do any
thing In the printing line, and doit well;
and If working cheap, and faithfully for
our patrons, will increase our business—
and wo believe it will—our business will
Increase and continue to grow.

Election Yesterday lor magistrates and
Constable.
We have not seen so much election this
whole Centennial year as wo saw yester
day, and all that we saw was at one street
corner—Plrroy's Oglethorpe corner. The
offices, of course, were desirable to the
candidates, but we think they were more
interested in winning personal successes
than in getting the offices. We doubt
whether either Tllden or Hayes was more
earnestly and vigorously “gone lor’’ by
any of their million admirers in tho wide
land, than were the candidates for Magis
trate and Constable yesterday at Plrrey’s
corner, nnd Plrrey’s corner was only one
of many places of the same sort.
The result of the vote at tho different
city districts we give below as nourly us
ascertained:

THE CONSERVATIVE MEN.
CONGRESS FEELING THE PRESSI'BE FROM
THAT ELEMENT—A SPEEDY SETTLE
MENT OF THE PRESIDENTIAL
PERPLEXITY DEMANDED.
Wuhiugtoa Special to tha New York lieraUl.]
There Is a strong autl growing de
sire among conservative men of both
parties here that between now and
the 14th of February, the day set by
law for counting the electoral vote,
the two Houses Bhall come to an
agreement as to the uutual condition
of the votes In all the States- South
Carolina, Louisiana, Florida and
Oregon; that the joint committee
shall agree upon and report uot only
a general rule lor counting the votes,
but specific directions regarding all
tuo eases where otherwise the joint
meeting would have to decide, and
that thus, the business being really
ugreed upon beforehand, the pro
ceedings 111 the joint meeting snail
be formal only, us they have almost
always been. It is urged that such
a policy has been almost always
adopted on previous occasions; that
in one case Mr. Clay, and in
others other members urged it as
indispensable, because the proceed
ings 111 joint meeting are necessarily
cumbrous, and because it is custom
ary that the joint meeting snail not
adjourn until It has completed the
count. It is easy to see ihe ju-uice
and Importance of this course. Con
gress will have six weeks, from me
3d of January, in which to discuss
and prepare the work to be done in
the joint couveulion. This is abuud
ant time. All the Southern commit
tees will report next week. Their
facts and conclusions ought to enable
fair and honest men ol the two
parties to come to a fair and honest
settlement.
The question whether the Houses
or the Vice President shall oount the
vote will be easily decided, for all the
precedents and discussions point in
one ulrectlon, add show that the
Vice President has no power In the
premises and the two Houses ail.
The real question to be decided, and
which ought to be settled before
hand, prominent men of both parties
here agree, are what shall be done
with the votes of Florida, Louisiana,
South Carolina and Oregon: and
these questions, they say, can be de
cided either in the joint oommittee,
or, better yet, after discussion by
both houses, but before the day
of counting. In fuct, it Is
feared by experienced legisla
tors that they cannot be set
tled at all when the joint convention
lias once begun its labors; that both
houses will then act under extreme
excitement, and subject to intrigues
and Irritation which, combined,
would, if any result was reached,
leave the propriety of it In doubt. It
Is urged that all the facts attainable
will be before Congress next week,
and that on these facts the two
houses can judge, and ought to be
able to agree beforehand ; that the
public anxiety would be allayed by
such a course, all possibility of trou
ble in the count would be prevented,
and fhe result known sooner.
Letters received from all parts of
the country by members of the two
houses, complaiu that while the
prospects of business and industry
were novor fairer, everything is pros
trated by this Presidential difficulty,
and great and continued suffering is
the resuit. This and other consider
ations led prominent members of
both parties hero to desire to see the
whole matter settled as soon as pos
sible and at. any rate before the joint
meeting on the 14th of February. If
these gentleman are encouraged by
the public press, they hope to bring
such influences to bear on tho House
as will overcome the efTorts which,
there is no doubt, will be made by a
few extremists to delay all settle
ment and push the wliold muddle
upon the joint meeting.
