Washington, January 11.—The Sen

ed House bill making appropriations
to supply deficiencies in the contin

sentatives, with vartous amendments
of an unimportant character.
Mr. Morton, from the Committee
on Privileges and Elections, submit
ted a resolution discharging Wm.
Runyon, of the firm of Martin &
Runyon, bankers and brokers of Wall
street, from custody of the Sergeant
at-Arms, he having testified before
the committee and thus purged him
self of contempt.
The Senate discussed the bill to
perfect the revision of statutes all
day.
The Senate had a short Executive

THE COXGRKSMIHXAI. CSWNITTEE*.
Washington, Jan. 10.—The Pacific
Railroad Committee agreed unani
mously to report the bill. It leaves
the conflicting branches from New
Orleans an open question.
The Judiciary Committee had no
meeting.
In the Committee investigating the
Police Board, Maj. Richardson, Chief
of Police, testified that Murtough,
the President of the Board, had re
quested him to watch Representative
Whitthorne, and if found in unques
tionable places, to arrest him. The
motive was to break the force of the
report of the Naval committee. The
scheme does not appear to have been
a'plot to entice Whitthorne in to dan
ger, but to arrest him on any trivial
pretext.
It transpired in the Committee in
vestigating the Police Board, that
Murtough suggested to Richards in
case Whitthorne did not visit disrepu
table places, that some woman be
employed to entice him. Richards
swears that he pretended willingness
to comply with Murtough’s sugges
tions. Murtough called the new po
lice board together, but his col
leagues did not appear.
It is stated that the President in
tends signing a bill abolishing the
board as soon as it reaches him.

the House came in to-day, and that
body still has a quorum.
Pinchback’s friends claims that he
is master of the Senatorial situation.
No disturbance.
New Orleans, January 11.— There
is no change in the situation this a.
m., and the orders of General Auger,
virtually forbidding %ny aggressive
movements by either party, will no
doubt prevent any collision. All
eyes are turned to Washington,
watching events there.
Gov. Packard has commissioned A.
S. Badger, Mgjor General of the Lou
isiana State National Guard, and or
dered him to organize the first divis
ion to-day.

WHOLESALE DISMISSAL OF CLAIMS.
Washington, Jan. 11.— The greater
part of the claims for proceeds of
captured and abandoned cotton and
other property, not barred by the
statute, were ascertained by judg
ments and recoveries of claimants
thereon in the Court of Claims, from
the year 18G7 to 1876, inclusive, the
total being $11,530,939. Most of the
pending suits brought after the time
limited by statute involve claims in
the aggregate amounting to $12,-
000,000.
On many other claims apparently
pending, no action had been taken
for a long time, and therefore the
Assistant Attorney General moved
to dismiss them for want of prosecu
tion. There were 2,196 suits. The
motion was granted in 1,199 cases,
and 257 were dismissed by consent of
claimants. The aggregate of claims
thus disposed of was $13,138,686.
THli EASTERN QUESTION.
GROWING CONFIDENCE IN PEACE.
London, 3 p. m., January 11.—Busi
ness on the Stock Exchange is life
less, pending news from to-clay’s sit
ting of the Conference. Continued
wet weather also depresses all kinds
of business.
The prevailing opinion in the city
is that there will not be war, even if
the Conference breaks up.
The exceptional strength of con
sols is due to the cheapness of money
and a growing feeling that whatever
Russia and Turkey may do. England
will not be embroiled.
WEATHER INDICATIONS.

The Montgomery papers explain
the affair of the forged checks on
Massachusetts banks, mentioned in
recent dispachcs. A stranger calling
himself Morgan offered at the First
National Bank of Montgomery some
checks on the First National Bank
of Lowell, Mass. The bank officer
counted him out the money for one
check, but afterwards took it back,
telling Morgan that he would first
telegraph to see if it was all right.
He telegraphed and found that it was
all wrong, but in the meantime Mor
gan vamosed.
Another Mlander Nailed.
Elsewhere in the Constitution will
be found a full-blooded and stiff
necked lie, taken from the New York
Times, and purporting to be an in
terview with ttie Hon. Benj. Hill.
Concerning this interview, Mr. Hill,
reading it at Washington, has the
following to say: , ,
“The New York Times’ special
from Washington, purporting to give
a conservation with me, is absolutely
false, made out of the whole cloth. I
pronounce the dispatch a lie fiom
beginning to end. I never had one
moment’s conversation with the man,
or uttered one word attributed to
me.”
Thus is another of the wretched
lies circulated so busily about Mr.
Hill, nailed to the counter. It really
begins to look as if there was a regu
lar conspiracy to breuk down the
character and usefulness of this man.
We correct this particular slander
with all the more pleasure when we
reflect that Mr. Hill is at Washing
ton attending to his official duties
like a patriot, and refusing to leave
his post at this most critieajjuncture
of affairs, to button-hole many mem
bers of the Legislature in a personal
canvass.— Atlanta Constitution.
Mr*. Spotted Tall Jealou*.
Kansu City Times.]
Immediately on their arrival the
aborigines spread over the depot
platform. Old Spotted Tail lost no
time in paying his respects to Major
Henri, proprietor of the depot eating
stand, when the following brief col
loquy ensued:
Spotted Tail (pointing to a pie)—
How, bow, meah, wah stay.
Henri (ghastly smiling)-Oh, yes,
take it right along, sir. I don’t
charge you a cent.
Spotted Tail proceeded to devour
the pie in silence, at same time feast
ing his vision upon a very handsome
lady who had called for a cup of cof
fee, merely to be better able to see
the Injuns. Suddenly old Spotted
Tail remarked to Mr. Henri, with a
sardonic grin:
“Heap nice squaw, ugh!”
"Oh, yes; lots of nice squaws; yes
—lots—lots-lots;—yes, yes,” and
the embarrassed eating house man
fled to the other side of bis stand to
escape his embarrassment.
Just then Mrs. Spotted Tail, a fat
frowsy, middle-aged squaw, with
large teeth, and a big knife and a
pound of boiled beef, came in, and
after a suspicious glance at the white
woman standing beside her lord and
master exclaimed in a very angry
tone: “Nea-see-chee.La-ab-mea coo
coose cheumpah squaw tahunta!”
Which, being duly interpreted, said :
“You mean man, come away from
that white squaw.”
Old Spot, laughed loudly as he
walked awav and the white lady
laughed heartily when the jealous
squaw’s exclamation was Interpreted
by a bystander.

As an evidence of the dissolute
character of the Turkish soldier, it is
said th; t in Constantinople itself
there is scarcely an English lady who
has not at some time been pinched
or intentionally insulted by the sol

streets. Their only protection is to
follow the example of the Turkish
ladles, and, when but of doors wear
the winding sheet, and keep their
faces covered.
