NEW MOON WIMIIF..H.
Once whan thi uew moon glittered.
Ho slouder iu the west.
Hooked ftrriHM my shoulder.
And a wild wish stirred my breast.
Oter my whits right shoulder
1 looked st the silver horu,
And wished s wish st even.
To come to pass in the morn.
Whenever the new moon flittered
Ho slender sad so fine,
I looked heroes my shoulder.
And wished thst wish of mine!
Now, when the west is rosy,
And the suow-wrostUea blush bSlow,
And T are the light white creseut
Sink downward soft and slow:
I never look over my shoulder,
As 1 used to look before:
For my heart Is older end colder,
And uow 1 wish no mors.
[Rose ffcrrjr,
A Cirrus In Court.
We have not yet done with “Howes’’
Great Loudon Circus and Sang Bit’s Eng
lish Menagerie.” The sheriff proceeded
with the 6aie as advertised, and elephants,
tigers, lions, monkey* and ring ponies,
golden chariot of Orpheus, tent and ticket
wagon and all the paraphernalia of a cir
cus were disposed of to the highest bid
der. But when old Father Antic, the
law, once gets his hands on a inan or a
menagerie, it is exceedingly difficult to
make him lessen his grip. First the holder
of a mortgage made by Barnum, one of
the proprietors of Howe*’ Great London
Circus and Sanger's Menagerie, had .it
foreclosed here, and the property adver
tised for wale. .Next Kkdly, tltc other
propeietor, of H. G. L. O. and S. E. M.
filed his petition in bankruptcy in the
United States Court of New York, pray
ing that himself and Barnum be adjudged
bankrupts. The Judge of that Court then
issued an-injunction restraining the sale,
but the injunction was disregarded on the
grtund that Georgia was notin the Judge’s
District, and, therefore, he had no jurisdic
tion in the matter. The sale accordingly
proceeded. But now the Metropolitan
Bank of New York which corporation
holds a mortgage given by Kelly, appliee
to a Georgia Court for ah injunction re
straining the sheriff from paying over the
process of tha sale, and the purchaser
from removing the property. lialso asks
tUat it no adjudication hi bankruptcy
takes place, the foreclosure may be set
aside and anew sale be ordered. We
publish the answer of Dockrill, the
mortgagee, this morning. He denies that
any illegal preference was shown him
over other creditors and explains the
nature of the transactions between him
self and Barnum which culminated in
the foreclosure and sale. He declares that
the money loaned by him was to liqui
date the indebtedness and pay the ordin ;
ary expenses of H. G. L. C. and S. E. M.,
and that it was understood when the
mortgage was given that it was to be
speedily foreclosed. He also charges that
the mortgage gsven by Kelly to the
Metropolitan National Bank was not to
secure a partnership debt of money ap
plied to the uses of the concern, but to
secure funds loaned Keely individually.
The next step, we presume, will be ar
gument before Judge GfßSON,and then an
appeal to the Supreme Court. In the
meantime the animais are wintering
comfortably in a Southern climate and
the children see the circus for nothing. It
is indeed an ill wind that blows nobody
any good, and children and animals will
thunk the lawyers for the litigation.
Avgusta Chronicle.
Poultry Jfotw.
A flock of well glowu turkeys rnnkes
such an agreeable addition to the re
ceipts of the farm, and they are often
raised with so little trouble, that I won
der at the seeming indifference of so many
farthers with reference to them. The
rules for breeding are simple and easily
understood, and failures are due to two
promise# t causes—one the weather, which
in sbme seasons, puts at fault the utmost
possible care; the other negligence.
A hot and dry season is well nigh an
essential for success with turkeys. This
is so important that it is of little use to be
in haste to getr turkeys hatched early, us
we may do with chickens; though old
birds are tough enough, young ones are
exceedingly lender, if brought out by
the first ot June, it will, in most eases, be
early enough, Even if they lire through
sucb'Cbilly and damp weather as is cum
mot!inJMayihey.wili.not grow much until
Bofweather ab'd httgl come to their relief;
but let them hatch out in June, in weather
which drives the breeders to the shads,
and little turkeys Just enjoy it, they will
stretch themselves in the sun and “lay off”
with every token of delight. Damp chilly
weather is their rnin; rain tbeir abomina
tion, morning dew a poison sure to blight
the hopes of experienced or careless breed
ers. Turkeys must be allowed to range
very freejy to insure success, but not
while the grass is wet —that is during the
first two months or so of their lives. After
that, one need not be quite so particu
lar.
Early turkeys not being advisable, the
first litter of eggs from a hon may be re
served for a common hen in May. and
the turkey hen invited to lay a second
litter which she will do if broken up. I
think the earliest turkey* do better in any
ease with a common hen, as she roams
lessapd the chicks becomes more tractable,
and the females from among them make
more manageable mothers for next year.

Oakland Lady.
Fortune has showered its gifts pro

S. Butler: a printer, of Oakland.
Mrs. Maria. Isabel Toomes, of Teha
ma County, came to San Francisco
in ill health some time ago for medi
cal treatment. Six months hereto
fore she removed to Oakland aud re
covered rapidly, but two months ago
she was seized with typhus fever and
sank under it. She was accompani
ed to the city by her adopted daugh
ter, an invalid, about 20 years of age,
and by a housekeeper. Mrs. Butler,
living next door to the sick lady, was
sam'aritlan-like in her attentions,
and on her death-bed Mrs. Toocnes
summoned her lawyer, and devised
all her property, real and personal,
to Mrs. Butler, merely stipulating
that her adopted invalid daughter,
Nellie Toomes, should be provided
for and maintained during her life
out of the estate. Mrs. Butler’s hus
band was appointed executor,
without bends. The estate of the
deceased lady consists of 4,000 acres
of land in Tehama County, known as
the Kancho de los Molinas, worth
$110,000; two lots in the town, horses,
cattle and live stock wortb $6,000; a
homestead in the town with four
acres of land valued at $18,500, and
personal property valued at $2,500,
making in aii an estate worth $131,-
000. Mrs. Toomes left not a relative
living, so there can be no contest to
the will. Mrs. Toomes was born iu
Santa Barbara, in 1822, and when 12
years of age removed to Monterey,
where, in 1844, she married the late
A. G Toomes.—Call.

This Incomparable preparation for the Hair is
commended to the public on its own merits.
It prevents the Hair from falling off, producing
a rapid and healthy growth; eradicates scurf and
dandruff, and cures diseases of the scalp. Try it
and judge for yourself.
[Prom Rev, E. T. Baird, Sec'y of Publication of
Presbyterian Church South.)
Richmond. July 27,1874.
The Xanthine is the only hair dressing I have
ever used which has removed the dandruff from
the scalp and made my hair soft aud pliable. It
has also restored my hair to its natural color; and
by occasionally using it as a hair dressing, I have
no donbt it will preserve the color.

Xanthine Cos., Richmond, Va.:
I have used the Xanthine now for three years,
and have induced others to buy it, and have nev
er known it to fail in accomplishing all you
claim for it. It is an excellent tonic, a pleasant
dressing, removing and preventing dandruff and
all unpleasant itching, promoting and preserving
the natural growth and color of the hair, and ren
dering it glossy and pliable. I confidently,
cheerfully, knowingly recommend it.
