Or shall we, like Independent self-reliant men, wake up ourselves, and do whatever our “hands tlndeth to do with all our might ?” We say the latter. If our places be on farms, lot us sow and diligently cul tivate, that In due time we may reap; tf In the work-shop, let os take hold of the tools that our hands have best learned to han dle. and use them with all our might and skill; If In any of thevarlous departments of trade let us pursue our calling with industry and honesty. A benign Provi dence will sojllo on the faithful worker, and abundance shall rewArd the labor of tho diligent. The young trees have already given signs of the season, and It Is now for man to apply the knowledge that Is In him to make a start to-day that will lead to full barns for tho farmer—oomfortable homes for the mechanic, and balances In bank for the merchant. i • • ■- Playing sharp for Liberty. Several months ago wo hod here a general Jail delivery—on which occasion twelve or Hfteen pMsoners escaped, several or whom are still at large. Among the escaped, and among those yet at liberty, Is Mack Lipscomb—who, by the way, is a rascal of great shrewdness, and Is cred ited with planning the manner of escape, and of being very active in executing the plan. Authorities hero have been constantly on the alert to discover tho whereabouts of the refugocs, and to recapture them, If possible. Recently Information reached them that this Mack Lipscomb was In or about Union Springe, Ala., and on Monday last, orders were sent there to have him arrested. The arresting party appeared and found Mack, but not knowing him personally, oould not Identify him. Mack was smart enough to see and understand the situation, and keeping his wits about him, pointed out another man as Mack Lipscomb and had him arrested. Of course, his denial of Identity amounted to nothing, and the bogus Mack came march ing quietly towards Columbus, while the real Mack was wending his way whith ersoever he would. Thus things pro gressed until tho party In charge neared Columbus, when persons were met who knew Mack Lipscomb, and who satisfied the officers that their prisoner was not the man. What has become of the genu ine Mack, report sayeth not. — Artistic. A few days since we dropped in at Wil liams’ Art Gallery, and saw displayed there some handsome pictures, gotten up In elegant style—among them some beau tiful stereoscopic views of our Court House and some of the prominent private residences in the city. Mr. Williams' Q&l --lery is well worthy of a visit. The New Town Hall at Ayrr. This elegant structure is now oomplete. In beauty of design it surpasses anything of its kind In the State. Constructed or brick and dark marble It is as permanent as it is charming. The English architects have adorned it in subdued colors, which plead! without tiring the eye. Dr. J. C. Ayer built and gave It to the towu In ac knowledgment of the distinction they conferred upon him In taking his name. Although it is a generous gift, still the hearty good wishes of a whole people are of greater value, and the generous donor has doubtless scoured them.— Groton Mats.) Journal, A Merlon* Negro Fight. Yesterday two negro men woiking en tho plantation of Mr. Geo. Radcliff, a tew miles from the city, had an alteroatton In which one struck the other across the hand with a hoe handle, breaking two of his fingers, when the man thus struck made at the striker with a pitchfork and thrust two of the prongs into him, inflict ing severe wounds. It Is unfortunate for a largo portion of the negro population, if not for the whole of It, that they are cot as fully under the personal authority of the whites as they once were. Such, and more serious en counters as that mentioned above, are now of daily occurrence, while In former times thoy were almost unheard of. When they were property, thoy wore not permitted to kill and malm each other so freely. And the law should now do what masters once did—restrain them. Constantinople is about thirteen miles round, and is inclosed by walls on the western, or land side. The "Harbor,” or Golden Horn, on the north, divides it from Galatia, and the Bosporus divides it from Scutari. These are properly but suburbs, but make up together the City of Con stantinople. It would be quite im possible to imagine a site better fitted for the building of an imperial city on. Nothing would seem to be want ing ; and it is no wonder that the eye of the world is every now and then fixed on it. The population of this imperial city is about half a million, and is made up of a somewhat motley group—of Greeks. Armenians, Jews, Arabs, "Europeans” and Turks; the Turks making up, as it would seem, about one-half of the population. Hr. Mebrnck'd Mlandard RrmrdK*. The standard remedies for all diseases of tho lungs are Sohenck’s Pulmonic (Syr up', Schonck’s Sea Weed Tonic, and bchenek’s Mandrake Pills, and If taken bofore the lungs aro doatroyed, a speedy cure Is effected. To these three medicines Dr. J. H. Schenck,,of Philadelphia, owes his uuri vallod success in the treatment of pulmo nary diseases. The Pulmonic Syrup ripens the mordld matter In the lungs ; nature throws it off by an easy expectoration, tor when the phlegm or matter is ripe a slight cough will throw It off, the patient has rest and the lungs begin to heal. To enable the Pulmonic Syrup to do this, Sc hen ok's Mandrake Pills and Suhenck’s Sea Weed Tonic must bo freely need to cleanse tho stomach and liver. Schenck’s Mandrake Pills aot on the liver, removing all obstructions, relax the gall bladder, the bile starts freely, and the liver is re lieved. Bchenck’s Sea Weed Tonio is a gentle stimulant and alterative; the alkali of which It is oomposed mixes with the food and prevents souring. It assists the di gestion ky toning up the stomach to a healthy oondltiouj so that the food and the Pulmonic Syrup will make good blood, then the lungs heal, and the patient will surely get well if eare Is taken to pre vent fresh Cold. All whi wish to consult Dr. Schenok, either personally or by letter, can do so at his principal offloe, corner of Sixth and Arch, streets, Philadelphia, every Mon day.
