EQUINOCTIAL.
The vernal equinoctial disturbance Is
upon us again. It opened yesterday with
a bluster, and brought, about 2 o’clock, a
light but cold driving rain from the south
east, which later In the day became hard
er. This Is a little In ad ranee of the storm
seuson proper, os it is not due until the
2lst; but as March is an exceptionable
month, and In all matters connected with
’’bad weather,” she Is supposed to have
her own way. There is no telling on what
day she may take a notion to get a “blow
up.” An besides It may be best that it is
not on exact time, as the number of days
Intervening between its occurrence and
the 21st Inst will doubtless modify the
force.
Before the use of steamships was so
general, the equinoctial seasons were al
ways seasons of anxiety and alarm to
merchants and travelers by sea; but now
they aro periods of less concern.

A Case for the Poor House.
An old negro man is daily on the streets
begging. Ho is frequently heard to call
aloud for a little money to buy bread with.
There is no necessity for such public dis
play of destitution as this old man makes,
for the county authorities have provided
ample accommodations for cases In the
poor house. Such mendicants ought not
to be consulted as to whether they wifi go
to the poor bouse or not, as the public
have them to support, the public should
have the right to say, where and how they
shall be cared for.

Almost a Fire.
Yesterday, early in the day, the worn!
and smith shop on the corner of Jackson
and Randolph streets was found to be on
fire, but Its early discovery saved the
building from burning and the engine
companies from the labor of working
their machines. This to a grand old cor
ner for a fire, and if it should once get a
good start there it would do its work so
quickly that water could not be put on It
iu time to save it. Ry the way, we hear
there to some talk of tearing down the
old wood building from the property and
putting up others better adapted to busi
ness purposes.

The niue-Ulas* Cure.
From the Detroit Free Press: So fur
as can be ascertained, only one Detroit
family baa yet taken advantage of the
wonderful curative properties of Gen.
F'leasontou’s blue-glass discovery. The
idea look with them from the start, and
threo or four weeks ago the blue-glass
commenced hammering at their ailment.
Tbe lady of the bouse, who has for years
been such an invalid that she could not
make over five calls in tbe afternoon,
was in two weeks so restored to health
that she was able to leave homo in (j)e
morning and remain away all day, leav
ing her children to get their meals among
the neighbors and her husband to lunch
down town. Before she began taking sun
baths she was melancholy and despond
ent and didn’t care for line things. In
one week from the time the first blue
lights were in she planned a trip to Flor
ida, ran her husband in debt for a set of
cameo jewelry, set in pearls, and had a
hard crying spell because she couldn’t
have anew velvet dress. She was former
ly so weak and languid that she could not
shake down the coal-stove. Tuesday
morning she not only shook down tbe
stove, but all the stove-pipe, aud when her
husbafd lumped out doors to call the
neighbors Ik- looked as if she had shaken
him around; too. Her appetite has won
dermlly Improved under the strange cure,
and now she can cat almost anything
which her husband will come home and
cook. For three long years she was al
ways complaining of headache. That
complaint iias now entirely vanished, and
she continually scolds about tbe corns on
her toes, thus giving her husband a grace
ful change. One of the pleasantest sights
on that street these sunny days is to see
this lady behind the blue panes, seated in
a rocker, her nose close to the pages of a
novel, liuir down, eyes half closed, and
the blue glass throwing a beautiful shade
over her old wrapper and brokenbm ked
slippers.
A Kentucky Ghost.—lt appears
that a week or two ago the Lexington
Press published au account of the
frightful deatli of a section boss on
the Cincinnati Southern Railroad,
wtio fell from the cliff at, the Iven
tuky river bridge to the river below.
On Tuesday evenirug about dusk this
mau, whose name wus Thomas Reed,
walked into the Press office, and find
ing Mr. Henry T. Duncan, jr., de
manded what fie meant by publish
ing his death, and insisted upon a
retraction. He complained bitterly
of the torture he had been forced to
endure from tbe condolence of his
friends apd the many aggravating
obituary notifies of him, not the least
injurious of which was In the Press.
Mr. Duncan, for reasons which he
cannot, explain, doubted the real ex
istence of the materialization before
him, but the man’s looks and words
indicated that he was mad enough to
light. When he left the office, which
was in a very few minutes, he banged
the door after him. The correction
published in the Press the next
morning put the undertaker on his
mettle. He insisted that Thomas
Reed died a frightful death, and that
he had buried his mangled remains.
There seems to be no doubt flow that
Thomas Reed is (toad and burled.

The standard remedies for all disecses
of the lungs are Sohenck’s Pulmonic Syr
up, Schenck’s Sea Weed Tonic, and
Sehenck’s Mandrake Piils, and if taken
before the lungs are destroyed, a speedy
cure is effected.
To these three medicines Dr. J. H.
Schenck, of Philadelphia, owes his unri
valled success In the treatment of pulmo
nary diseases.
The Pulmonic Syrup ripens tho mordid .
matter in the lungs; nature throws it off
by an easy expectoration, for when the
phlegm or matter is ripe a slight cough
will throw it off, the patient has rest and
the lungs begin to hSat.
To enable thy Puluiuuie. Syrup to do tide,
Schenck’s Mandrake Pills and Sehenck’s
Sea Weed Tonic must be freely used to
cleanse the stomach and liver. Scbenek’s
Mandrake Pills acton the fiver, removing
ail obstructions, relax the gait bladder,
the bilo starts freely, and the liver' is re
lieved.
Schenck’s Sea Weed Tonic is a gentle
stimulant and alterative; the alkali of
which it is composed mixes with the foofi
and prevents souring. It assists the di
gestion ky toning up tho stomach to a
healthy condition; so that the food and
tho Pulmonic Syrup will make good
blood, then tho lungs heal, and thepatient
will surely get well if eare-is taken to pre
vent fresh Cold.
AU who wisii to consult Dr. SehoncK,
either personally or by letter, can do so at
his principal office, corner of Sixth and
Arch, streets, Philadelphia, every Mon
day.
