HOW IT HAS
London Times.]
Oa Vendor ovoning, P*. Olooburg,
one of Uie uieni tiers of th§ com witte*
eugaged la tne revision "6T tbe'Scrlpt
ures, delivered o lecture at the town
hall, Wokingham, on “the Bible—
The manner In'fymten “it-hoa been
Preserved, Transmitted, and Cobles
Multiplied.” The lecture was Illus
trated by ancient manuscripts aud
old editions of the Bible. There was
a large attendance. Mr. Walter, M.
P., presided, and in'
ing the lecturer, said no subject
could be of greater interest to
an assembly of Cnristian people
than the history of the ways
and means by which-tbatsaarad vol
ume which was so precious in their
eyes had been handed down them
from ancient times, and had been
transmitted In their present form for
their ufce and comfort. Dr. Gins
burg In the course of his lecture ex
plained that the earliest records of
Scripture were written on stone, and
that previous to the existence of
parchment manuscripts they were in
scribed Upon the barks of trees or
upon rolls made from the peel of the
papyrus. In many cases the records
consisted of pictures; for instance, in
the Book of Esther the 10 sons of
Human ware represented as being
hung up with their father in the
manner described in the Old Testa
ment, or aa in the Book of Kluge,
where B**~ She battles recorded
there were exhibited in pictorial
form. A tabulated sUOemeut
was placed against every line of
the text in the ofd records, showing
how many times * certain letter,
word, or phrase this was
summarized at the end of every
page, again at the end of every 32
pages, and afterward at the end of
every book, and at the end of the
whole Bible the sum total was given.
This would give some Idea of the care
with which the Bible had been
guarded aod preserved, and such a
gigantic work as he had described
could not, he undertook to say, be
accomplished by*w dozen men it they
lived for five hundred years. The
New Testament bos not been treated
in tbis way at all. They would not
find anything of the kind in the co
dex of Alexandriuus, which was pre
sented to King Charles, and was now
in the British Museum ; or in the co
dex of Blnataticus, of similar anti
quity, w hich Tichendorff found at the
convent of Sinai. The latter was
now at St. Petersburg, and was tne
one which the Emperor of Russia
had had published and circulated to
public libraries and scholars. He
thought, when they heard so much
about tips Emperor of Russia, it was
only aue to render to him the codex
and its distribution; and although
they could not compare the English
with the Russian government, be
cause the former had the reputation
of beii>g one of tUo most, if not the
most, libarai Governments in the
world; yet they never found it doing
anything of this sort. Having refer
red to the rapid advaace made in the
circulation of the Bible after print
ing was introduced, the lecturer
stated that at the time the first Bible
was printed by Gottenburg, a copy
of which be produced,Roman Cathol
icism prevailed all over Europe, and
it was only fair to say of the Roman
Catholic Church that it printed and
circulated the Scriptures to a large
extent, and did not, as was misstated,
endeavor to keep the Bible from the
people. Dr. Ginsburg told some
amusing facts connected with the
preparation of the Authorized Ver
sion. One of the editions wbioh King
James I. declined to allow the re
visera to use as a help contained
marginal notes which he considered
heretical and republican. The mar
ginal note to the passage in the
Epistle of St. Peter, ‘Fear God and
honor the King,” was as follows:
’ Thatdepends upon circumstances;
if the word of the King is in harmo
ny with the. word of God, obey the
King; but if Uie contrary to the word
of God, obey God rather than the
King.” " ■
