Trying Blue blaai a aa Beiuedy.
The blue mania, says a oor
re%>onuent 'from New York to the
Boston Post, shows itself in all parts
of the city, and most noticeably in
the form of panes of the presorihed
color inserted in windows. Yet the
extent of the testing of the theory is
not to bo seen from the streets, for
the blued light is usually let in from
the windows southward, and conse
quently in half the iastaaoes from the
rear of the houses. Plates of blue
glass, framed so as to be suspended
in windows, are ulso used to a surpris
ing extent. Seldom has a rage for a
supposed cure-all sogeuerally takeu
hold on the public, and with how
little understanding is evidenced in
the frequent use of glass not colored
in thUHM>ufaetuesbutsiniply coated
with some kind of, blue stain. Most
of the large retail fancy goods stores
have eSthhllshefl departments to sup
ply tne sudden demand for blue
glass, the stock being composed of
plates of various sizes, framed and
unfratnod. The traffic in these goods
Is brisk, and the purchasers are al
most exclusively women. Prices are
about treble those of glass of any
other color aad similar quality. Im
mediately on the outbreak or the
mania the wholesalers in glass or
dered large quantities of the blue
ware, the best of which is imported,
aud they are now making enormous
profits on their iuvestments.

to better his fortune, and Crumrig agreed
to go with him. In conversation with
Hoffman, Crumrig said that he was the
possessor of about faOO, and it was to ob

man expressed a desire to accompany
Crumrig provided he could obtain s3ub

that Hoffman was the man who had com

he had left for Oregon with hiacmployer.
Ilf then obtained the requisite papers and
a complete description of the tw r o men,
and started in pursuit. He telegraphed
to various points along the line of the
railroad to have the men intercepted, but
those who received the description failed
to find them. The Chief tracked them to
St. Louis, Omaha and San Francisco. He
then learned that they bad gone to Port
land, and followed tbeu. At that place he
lost them, but found trace of them again
in Salem. There be received information
that the men had gone back to Portland.
He reached Portland in timejo learn that

[From Rev. E. T. Baird, Bec’y of Publication ef
Presbyterian Church South.]
Richmond, July 27,1874.
The Xanthine is the only hair dressing I have
ever used which has removed the dandruff from
the scalp and made my hair soft and pliable. It
bas also restored my hairioits natural color; and
by occasionally using it as a hair dressing, I have
no doubt it will preserve the color.
E. T. BAIRD.
[From Rev. Mr. Cameron, Minister Of Presbyte
rian Church South.]
Mossy Cwbjcs. Tbnn, Aug. 22, 1876.
Xanthine Cos., Richmond, Va.:
I have used the Xanthine now for three years,
and have induced others to buy it, and have nev
er known it to fail in aecomplisßing all you
claim for it. It is an excellent tonic, a pleasant
dressing, removing and preventing dandruff and
all unpleasant itching, promoting and preserving
the natural growth and color of the hair, and ren
dering it glossy and pliable. I confidently,
cheerfully, knowingly recommend it.
