Saturday night about 10 o’clock, Char
ley Terry, a negro barber, fell Into an
uncovered dry well In tho rear of Charley
Heyman’s saloon, but divided from the
lot by a fence which was erected last Sat
urday. He laid at the bottom of the well,
which Is thirty feet deep and curbed with

Sunday morning, when, led by his groans
an old negro named Mat, who lives back
there, found him. He was pulled put by
some of the negroe.s In Barney Hawkin’s

.Wore COM.
From one of our merchants recently re
turned from the lower counties, we are
apprised of the gratifying fact that every
farmer by whoso lands ho passed, was
planting corn. U|>on direct inquiry ho
learned that they were each planting
larger areas of corn this yoar than last.
This is truly gratifying, for even last
year a number of people raised more corn
than they needed for home consumption,
and now have corn for sale; while still an
other set planted almost enough to do
them. If this yoar they are increasing
their acreage in corn, the coining fall will
indeed present a gratifying result.
At last after much sad experience our
people are beginning to live at home.
Eighteen seventy-eight will find our corn
cribs and smokehouses again utilized,
and the West will havo to look elsewhere
for a market for their corn and bacon.

Mr. J. Is. Wlilielm is taking the oltorch

about here by storm. He came here about
six months ago, and by advertising in the
Times, and informing the public what he
could do in the way of House and Sion
Painting, kalsomlnlng and paper hang
ing, he has been run with work of the high
er class ever since he settled among us. He
has now under contraot the painting of
two churches in the town of Buena Vista,
and one in Geneva, besides several pri

towns. His success shows what advertis

principal capital is his skill as a workman
In a useful branch of mechanical labor.
We commend Mr. Wilhelm to our friends

may require good painting. During Mr.
Wilhelm's absence from tho city, orders
for him may be left at this office to be

Columbus Guards Drill.
As was announced by the drum, the
Columbus Guards turned out for drill, the
target-practice being dispensed with for
the evening. After proceeding down Broad
street, they marched up, with an unusual
numbor of muskets in line, to manoeuvre
on upper Broad street. The skill of the
new recruits is due to the excellent drill
ing they receive at the Armory, for many
turned out yesterday afternoon for their
first time. Since tho 26th of April will
soon bo upon us, if possible the two city
companies should bo in such trim by that
time, that a Battalion drill will be the
slightest honor they can bostow around
the graves of chorlshed heroes.
Dr. N. (oho,
Oculist Optician, formerly of Viomia,Aus
tria, tokos pleasure in informing the cit
izens of Columbus and vicinity that he
has arrived hero a few days ago, and is
stopping at the Rankin House for sovoral
days; whore he represents his world re
nowned Brazilian and Australian Crystal
Spectacles.
His Spectacles have been tested and
recommended by Dr. Terry of this place
and by several other physicians, and are
warranted to give satisfaction. Special
calls made within tho city if desired
without extra charge.
Very Respoctfully,
Dk. S. Cohn.
We publish the announcements in our
advertising columns for pay, and seldom
trouble ourselves to enquire as to the
qualities or merits of the wares adver
tised, further than to assure ourselves
that they are legitimate and respectable.
But when an article performs miracles in
our midst, transforming the old to
young, iu appearance at least, wo cannot
pass it by unnoticed. We know of people
who, years ago, wero grey headed and
who now wear tikrk ami glossy hair.
How is this? It evidently is not colored,
for it has a perfectly natural appearance
Instead of the harsh, dry, staring look of
hair stained with nitrate of silver or other
ootumon hair dyes. No! it has been re
stored to its youthful color, lustre and Vi
tality by the use of that wonder of won

increases its fame, while itaimitators die
