It Is now thought that Court will ad

Taeeday, during the noon recess of the
Court, W. E. Mumford, Esq., delivered an
able and telling speech In favor of the
Constitutional Convention, showing In a
'Strong light the many and palpablo de
fects of the present constitution and the
Imperative necessity for anew one.
The Convention question Is being gener
ally agitated In the county at this time.anil
the majority of the people favor It
,Jt seems to mo that the wholesale mer
chants of Columbus are noglectlng their
Interests by not making stronger efforts
to secure the trade of Telliotton. During
the past week there have been four repre
sentatives of Macon business houses here
and I understand they come periodically.
Asa neoesalty the trade goes to Macon.
The business of Talbotton is done by
clever, reliable men, such as W. J. Weeks
A Cos., W. H. Martin & Bro., Bull A Bald
win, T. A. Beall, Kimbrough A Gibson,
Wm. Ragland. J. H. Harvey, J. H. MaumJ,
Wm. Kellar, King A MeUlchamp, F. J.
Wells ami others, all keeping full stocks
ang doing A safe business. At the hotel
camfee found Mr. Harvey one of the best
caterers to the wants of a hungry man In
the country. The trip can bo made at any
time pleasant and profitable. By leaving
Columbus on the freight at 7:30 a. m. yon
will have five or six hours in Geneva,
where you will And a lot of thoroughgo
ing business men, suck as J. D. Hough,
W. 0. Paschal, J. W.McCrary, J. J. Jones.
Dennis Bros., King A Mellichamp, and
others whose names I cannot now recaU,
all of whom seem to be In a prosperous
oondttlon, and whose trade would greatly
benefit Columbus. Leaving Geneva at
12:30, arrive In Talbotton at 2 P. M., giving
the entlro evening and until 10 o’clock the
next day In which to see the merchants
of Talbotton. If our merchants will make
the effort Ido not think they will have
cause to repent it.
ANOTHER PLOW MANX FACT CH
INO ENTERPRISE.
We understand the Columbus Iron
Works are preparing to manufacture
plows on a large scale. The Company
has already commenced, and now turns
out quite a large number of these useful
farming utensils—but the present work Is
only a commencement,and In a few months
they will be shipped to all points In Geor
gia, Alabama and Florida. Columbus al
ready has a high reputation for her plows,
a reputation made by the excellent
plows designed anil patented by
Mr. Ilaiman, anil which he still
makes here In large numbers, and this
reputation will be fully sustained by
those turned out by the Iron Works. Wo
are glad to know manufactures of our
town ore Increasing In extent and popu
larity, and hopo it will not be many years
before all tools in common use among
our people, wlil be made here. The thous
ands of dollars sent off to pay for the
making of what ought to be made here,
puts money In the pockets of other peo
ple that we would be glad to see kept In
the pockets of our own folks.
A IJTTLE TVS.
Near Watt A Walker’s cornor, yester
day evening, two of Simmons & Slocum’s
miustrel troupe came by with a white dog
trotting along in the rear. From the dog’s
expression no mischief was visible; but to
oreate a little fun ouo of the fellows clap
pod his hand, and at once the dog started
for the first negro boy, snatching his hat
from his head, then plunging with it into
the street. The hat, however, was soon
taken and given back to the boy, who was
tolrt to get away while they heldtbedog;
but no sooner was the dog let loose than
the hat was again tnhis possession. Pretty
soon, however, a troop of littlo nigs came
down tho sidewalks, and the dog was
turned on them. As they scampered away
tho least one was overtaken, turned ever
and over on the sidewalk and his hat car
ried away in the dog's mouth. Bight
hero, however, tho fun ended for tho littlo
negro began to cry, and the mlnßtrels af
ter getting and giving him his hat and a
nickel, went into their hotel with their
clever dog.

Aloud Advice.
Now is the time of year for Pneumonia,
Lung FeVer, Ac. Every family should
have a bottle of Bosohoe’s German Syrup.
Don’t allow for one moment that cough to
take hold of your child, your family or
yourself. Consumption, Asthma, Pneu
monia, Croup, Hemorrhages, and other
fatal diseases may set In. Although it Is
true German Syrup is curing thousands
of these dreaded diseases, yet it Is much
better to have it at hand when three do
ses will cure you. One bottle will last
your whole family a winter and keep you
safe from danger. If you are consump

remedy. Sample bottles 10 cents. Keg

Ur. Kcbenck’a tan-lard Remedies.
The standard remedies for all dlsecsos
of the luugs are Suhenck’s Pulmonic Syr
up, Schenck’s Sea Weed Tonic, and
Schenck’s Mandrake Pills, and if taken
before the luugs are destroyed, a speedy
cure is effected.
To these three medicines Dr. J. H.
Schenck, of Philadelphia, owes his unri
valled success in the treatment of pulmo
nary diseases.
The Pulmonic Syrup ripens the mordid
matter In the lungs; nature throws it off
by an easy expectoration, for when the
phlegm or matter Is ripe a slight cough
will throw It off, the patient has rest and
the lungs begin to heal.
To enable the Pulmonic Syrup todothis,
Schenck’s Mandrake Pills and Schenck’s
Sea Weed Tonic must be freely used to
cleanse the stomach and liver. Schenck’s
Mandrake Pills act on the liver, removing
all obstructions, relax the gall bladder,
the bile starts freely, and the Uver is re
lieved.
Schenck’s Sea Weed Tonic is a gentle
stimulant and alterative; the alkali of
which it is composed mixes with the food
and prevents souring. It assists the di
gestion ky toutng up the stomach to a
healthy condition; so tnat tho food and
the Pulmonic Syrup will make good
blood, then the luugs heal, and the patient
will surely get well It care Is taken to pre
vent fresh Cold.
All who wish to consult Dr. Schenck,
either personally or by letter, can do so at
his principal office, corner of Sixth and
Arch, streets, Philadelphia, every Mon
day.
Schenc’ks Medicines are sold by all
druggists throughout the country.

While It is true that there is no ab

save in the dipsomaniac's strength to
resist temptation, there are valuable
assistants to his physical weaknesses
in the form of animal ami vegetable

been sufferers from the diseased pas

fuct ttiat the craving for alcoholic
stimulants is Invariably preceded by
a depression of the nervous system
that is aotually insupportuble, ac
companied almost invariably
with a distaste for solid food.
What a man is to resort to
at this peilod of his ailment
is a most important question. Am

who huve tried it under the circum

made palatable with celery salt and
a moderate quantity of black or red
pepper, will afford the desired stimu
lant, with no bad effects, and at the
same time aid in restoring the tone
of the stomach. Quassia, eallsaya,

aiding the digestive and nervous

which will certainly be at once di

A lllli Nenif of Honor.
The Duke of Wellington had a
sense of honor in all money dealings,
and would suffer none of his agents
to do a mean thing in his name. His
steward once bought some land ad
joining his country estate, and was
boasting of having made a very line
bargain, from the seller being in
straightened circumstances,
“What did you pay for it?” asked
tbeDukc.
“Light hundred pounds,” wus the
answer.
"And bow much was it worth ?”
"Eleven bundred pounds,’’said tho
steward, robbing his hands in glee at?
tho t hought of the good bargain.
“Then take three hundred pounds
and carry them to the seller, with my
compliments, and don’t ever venture
to talk to me of cheap land again.”
The steward was confounded, and
could scarcely credit his own ears.
The idea that any one could refuse to
profit by a sharp bargain, and throw
money away in paying more than was
agreed on, was hard for him to com
prehend.
