in January last. If this is done, and the
case Is trlod, It will occupy three or four

The facts as developed on tho prelimi

January about 12 o’clock, Mr. McGamery
whp lives about 259 yards from Shepherds
house, was awakened by hearing some
one calling. He got up at pneo and found

Daily Times: I saw in th paper where
you said that Willis JonoS had nlneteon
children and had to bo buried by the
white people. It Is a mistake and wish
you would correct tho error, for I am his
stepdaughter, and ho was burrled on my
expenses. Yours truly,
Habbiett Lee.
We pabllsh tho above note for the bene
fit of the Harriet. Our Information in the
case was derived from a man who repre
sented himself as a son of Willis Jones,
and who asked for money for the purpose
natnod, and got some. If Harriet, being
only a step daughter, paid the entire
cost of tho burial, as she claims to have
done, she did woll, and quite enough,
without adding to the amouut the sum
she enolosed in her note to pay for its
publication. Wo publish it gratuitously
and will return to her her money, if she
will send to tho office.

To-morrow night this troupe will appear
at Springer’s Opera House, and give one
of their popular performances.
This oompany is one of the largest that
is now traveling, and every member of it
is master of his part. Wherever they
havo given entertainments they have
drawn crowded houses, and will doubt
loss do tho same here.
The Little Bock Republican says:
“Duprez & Benedict.VThe best min
strel show over given in Little Rock was
that presented by Duprez A Benedict last
evening at the Opera House, and we have
never seen a more highly delighted audi
ence. Amusement-goers of oourso know
that tho success of a minstrel entertain
ment consists largoly, we might say al
most exclusively, in a good first part.”
If that Is laoking, tho audience becomes
wearied wito stale jokes and poor music
until they are entirely unfitted to appre
ciate whatever of good there may be in
the olio. Tho manager of Duprez A Ben
edict’s Minstrels seems to fully appreciate
tills fai t, and we are bound to say that
we never saw a minstrel performance in
this city that gave as universal satisfac
tion as the one last evening. Tho music
—well it may be that we are enthusiastic
—was far ahead or the best wo have hoard
this season; we allude to both vocal and
in strumental.”
Try them to-morrow night and see if
they don’t fill the bill up full.

SCANDAL.
“And her*, where Slander’s acorn ia spilt,
and gabbling Folly cluck a above

Mrrrdith.
Mr. Editor—hl&y I ask space in your
columns to say a few words regarding
that most prevalent evil, Scandal ? An
evil of such frequeut occurrence, that
scarce a day can pass without one’s atten
tion being compelled to instanoos thereof,
A sin sometimes indulged in from sheer
idleness, yet often attended with such
grape results. How pitlfnl, how contempt
ible it is, to see, persons who call them
selves gentlemen and ladies, indulge o
vitiated thirst for mental excitement, at
the expenso of a neighbor’s reputation!
And the worse the story, the more eagerly
they enjoy the telling It. Think of tho
mortification, tho sorrow, the torture,
these scatterers of Scandal inflict upon
their victims (often innocent victims)- and
all for what ? Certainly for no good.
Scandal, like Jealousy, is a monster
which oft "doth make Uie meat it feeds
upon." Or, granting that its dissemina
tors do succeed tn possessing themselves
of some rancid morsel of truth, by the
time they have tossed it from one to the
other, it has become so enlarged and dis
torted, so overgrown with the fungus ex
crescences of their own imaginations, that
tho small foundation is soarcely recog
nizable, and its poisonous power is vastly
multiplied.
Among theso "busy-bodies,” and “back
biters," are both men anil women "who
do profess and call themselves Chris
tians!” Would it not be better for all
such, in speaking of a “neighbor," to
“Urq him well,
And keep sweet charity in view,
E’en tbr the De’ilP*
Can they afford to Ignore tho many
scripture injunctions about that “unruly
member”—the tongue? about “back
biters” and slanderers?, and to "judge
not, but ye be judged?" .“Thou shalt love
thy neighbor as thy self.” “Love work
ethnolU tohis neighbor?” (sr, if they
can better appreciate a worldly maxim,
wauld it not profit them to remember
that slanders like “curses and chickeuß.
come home to roost”? For how often do
we seo it the case, that those who defame
others, become, themselves, the sad sub
jects of defamation, and live to irarn how
their "teuder frionds” have spoken of
them—
•• Have talked with broken hint and glance;
The choicest flowers of calumny
That seem, like weeds to spring from chance;
That small, small, imperceptible
Small talk that ents like powdered glass;
Ground in Tophaua—none can tell
Where lurks the power the poison has!
lago’s words on the subloct, can soarco
become too familiar.
‘•Who steal* ay purse steals trash; ‘tis some
thing—nothing, 'twas mine, ’tls his,
Ami has been slave to thousands;
Bat he who pilfers from me, my good name
steals that
Which not enriches him, and makes me poor
indeed.

Under the direction and superintend
ence of Mr. Mac McCormick, the steamer
Wylly is gradually assuming a now and
beautiful appearance. She is lying com
pletely out of the water upon four boxes,
to hoist her upon which the arms of the
wheels had to be sawed off. At present
new guard beams are being placed in and
caulked tightly and the nosing to the
guards is partly removed. The cabin
floor is being re-coated with pure white
paint, after finishing which they will pro
ceed to paint the stanchions.
The re-painting and eaulking of her
hulk and hold has been finished, and as
soon as the work on the guards is done,
the new boiler and fixtures will be put tip.
Noticeable improvements are to be seen
in these—for, in the new boiler, the flues
are larger and not liable to be choked up,
as were the former ones; and besides this,
there will be .two smokestacks instead ol
one. i S S -
All repairs, including new timbers, and
'rh-painfing both inside and outside of the
cabin, will be completed by the middle of
this month, and by the Ist of May the
Wyllywill again ply her trade on our
river.
