The Uptowns Win.
The uptowns sad downtowns yesterday
evening engaged In a match gamo of ball
on the north common; and during six In
nings, which was the length of the game,
both sides played extremely well. When
the score wss announced It was found
that the uptowns were ahead by 11 runs,
having made IS rune to the downtowns 4.
There was no prize, but the uptowns
claimed the dead red ball which was
to have been given by Mr. John King to
the downtowners had they won the game,
and it wa given them.

was yesterday, all the rage, and many

THE ATLANTIC COAST LINE,
by running the fast schedule from Nuw
Orleans to New York, through this place,
has very perceptibly increased the travel
this way. In very many respects this Is
tpe most pleasant route to the Northern
or Southern bound traveler.
BABE FEET AND BATHING,
are matters now uppermost upon the
brain of highhearted and Inexperienced
youth. Tho warm weather of spring
burns more shoes off the feet of boys
than all the hot stoves in the country do
in the winter. Stumpt toes and sore
throats are hooted at, and tanned shoul
ders and ohanoes of drowning are not re
garded by them.
THE MONUMENT.
Alderman Nuckolls and Mr. MoOauly
were measuring and taking "sights" yes
terday on Brood street, at the junction of
Randolph, to see If the erection of the
Confederate Monument there would in
terfere with the cisterns, sewers or gas
mains of the oity, and ascertained that It
would not. We are glad of the settlement
ottKat point, for when the monument is
built It should, in our judgment, be built
at that plooe. There are so many consid
erations In its favor and so few against
it, that we think but little If any opposi
tion will bo made to It.

J JskliUmi Timen: Thinking that a state
ment from Wra. Shepherd, charged with
the killing of his wife, January 20th, and
whose trial Is sot for to-day, would be of
Interest to the readers or the Times, I
this morning sought and obtained an In
troduction to him. Ho Is a small man,
about five feet six inches, rather florid
complexion, blueeyes, and hair inclined
to be dark. He seemed glad to meet me
and anxious to have a hearing before,
the people. He is about 45 years of age,
has been married three times; his first
wife died and he was devoroed from his
sound lost spring, and married about a
month afterwards the unfortunate
woman with whose death he Is charged.
She was about 34 years of age and they
hod been married about eight months.
In answer to my request to state to me
all he knew concerning her death,he said:
HIS STATEMENT'.
About one month before her death she
became poof, (she expected to be a mother)
she said to me, Mr. Hhepperd, If I knew 1
had to stay In this fix I wouldn’t live. At
that time she began to take teas and med
icines to rid herself of child prematurely
She often remarked to me that, "if I do
not get better I will hang myself." About
this time she began making me a large
lot of clothing, and I asked her why she
was making up so much. She answered,
*it may be a long time before I make you
any more. I shall never have a child.’ She
made this remark many times. At two
different times shortly before she killed
herself, she came near dying at night, and
I feared she had taken some rat poison
which she had. I then took it out of her
trunk and burled it- She had taken some
thing, I didn’t know what.
About three days before her death she
told me, “I have eaten all that camphor-
(she had, about an ounce) in a day
and a half."'
On Thursday erbning, before her
death, I asked her to walk out with me
to look at the fattening hogs In the pens.
She remarked "the two In that pen ire as
many as you want; there Is as much meat
In the smokehouse as 1 will want.’’ (There
were only too small pieces in there.) I
said, "Oh, you’ll get hearty again, and
feel like eating.” She repeated, “That is
as much os I will ever want.”
Last fall, she had asked me for and I
set aside a little piece of ground, about an
acre and a half, In front of the house, for
a cotton patch for her own use. The Fri
day before her death, I was talking about
hauling out lot manure and preparing it
for hor, and she said: “Never mind—l will
never work out nary 'nother day.” I was
having an old house torn down, and hod
torn down all the shed-rooms, leaving tne
main body of It (which was built of logs)
at dinner time Saturday, when she asked
me to quit. She seemed so anxious about
it, that I told the men to quit. They then
proposed going a-tlshing, and asked me
where my fishing-lines were. I told them
they were dofrn on the creek—l
couldn’t toll exactly where they
were—l would go and show them after
dinner. My wife asked me to go with
them. I told her I would not be gone
more than 25 minutes. She told me to
stay and fish. I returned about sundown.
We went to bed about o'/, o’clock that
night. About 9 o’clock she got up, 1
asked her what was the matter, -and she
said Bbo felt restless ami went out doors.
She returned in a short while and said,
darling, are you asleep. I replied, pretty
near. She lay down by me and put her
arm around me and I laid my arm across
her. That Is the lust thing I remember
till I was awakened, after midnight by a
noise of some kind—do not know what.
I saw a light in the old kitchen and got
up and went out there. The door wss
shut witfi a chair against it. I pushed it
open and found my wife lying near the
hearth with the gun lying across her,
bleeding from a wound lu the head. The
blood had run about two feet. She wus
breathing hard, but could not speak. As
soon os l found her 1 .began to halloo and
went for Mr. McGlamory, who lived about
two hundred yards off.
We had never had any cross words or
hard feelings toward each other—had
lived happily together. I know of no
cause for the act except her condition,
which seemed to prey on her mind.
While speaking of his wife, the old
mau’s eyes were moist with tears, and it
Is not easy to listen to him and believe
him guilty of the horrible crime with
which he stands charged.
At 8 o’clock this morning, Mrs. 8.8. Me-
Kinni, who was tried before a Justice of
the Peace and convicted of keeping a dis
orderly house, and sentenced to six months
imprisonment in the county jail, was
brought on a writ of habeas carpus and
discharged fin the ground $f a want of ju
risdiction by toe court before which she
was charged. Col. M. H. Blandford and
<3r’J. Thornton were her attorneys.
It is probable that the court will bo oc
cupied several days on tho Shopherd
ease.
There Is a good crowd In attendance on
the court, and I am adding many new
names to the subscription list of the
Timrb, which already sends more papers
to this office than any other journal.
