Last night about 10 o’alook, and Just
after a Shower of rain, Columbus was
visitor! >ry a shower of "graaßhoppers,”
and to the lower parts of the elty they
ooiild be raked op by th* liattult. They
wore of a dark brown color, and white
speaks and greenish stripes, and In size
as large as the little linger and larger,
(the genuine grasshopper of the old Helds,
only not quite so green), and from the di
rection they tako, they seem to le north
westward bound.
We Judge this from finding thorn thick
er down about the Court House and In
the southeastern part of the city. About
half past nine o’clock, a peculiar whizzing
noise In the atmosphere was noticed, re
sembling that of the passage of a drove of
blrde high In the air; and It Is thought
that those that fell afterwards were only
a small portion of this myriad horde.
Can It bo that we are to be Infested with
this the greatest pest of the Northwest—
the ‘grasshopper?” It may be that they are
taking a migratory tour to And now flelds
to devour. Many of thorn can ettll he seen
on the ground this morning.

Editor Times: The examination of wit

rigid and thorough, often tedious, was
completed about 0 o'clock last night. So

At 11 o'clock Court adjourned till morning,
when the argument was resumed by A.
A. Carson, Esq., for the State, followed
by Col. Wallace for the defence, Col Hol
sey closing for tho State. The spoeches
on both sides wore able, displaying much
legal acumen. Tho case was given to tho
Jury about 11 o.olock a. m., and they re
mained out only five or ten minutes, when
they returned a verdict of “not guilty."
The usual orders wore then taken and
the Court adjourned for the torm.

FRAGMENT*.
—Ouo of Macon’s bewitching holies is
stopping in the city.
—Tho nimble flee has returned. As
Josh Billings would say: “Dang a flee.”
—Marital ties will commence soon. We
wonder who will initiate tho game.
—“Vernal” spring has really come at
last. The small boy now hunteth the
flexible “worrura.”
—Some complain that cow bolls are a
nuisance, and exceedingly trublesomedu
ring these long summer nights.
—lt Is not considered good tasta in
England to woar a black dross to a wed
ding, but In France it is permitted.
—‘‘Now Is tho time for husking bees,"
shouts an enthusiastic exchange. Ail
right; if any one wants to husk a tiee, he
can do so. We don’t.
—Won’t wo have a treat when the Ama
teur Chorals make their first appoaranco 1
Have some spocia!tles, by all means.
—Unllmbor fishing rods, overhaul
tackle, mend gill nets, for the fishing
season is nigh at hand.
—Brides’ drosses, at tho moment, are
trimmed with fringes of the lily of the
valley, headed with orange blossoms.
—The red-bugs are sharpening their
bills, and laughing in their sleeves, about
the fun they’ll have with the young folks
ut the picnics.
