For the month of March only one trass
for of property has been recorded. The
books are Oiled from page to page with
mortgages, and the future promises little
better.
One Blew struck.
Yesterday, William Harold sued out a
warrant against Jim Abner, for striking
him with a stick, which was occasioned by
the former’s cursing him. This case will
pe brought up at to-morrow’s court.
A Picnic Party.
A pleasant little picnio party was given
out by Lindsays creek, a small stream
running near the out skirts of Linwood.
The boys were along this time and the
girls were consequently as gentle as
lambs, not even to glanco at a tree or
think of paddliDg bare footed in the
water. *
The grasshopper*.
The grasshoppers whloh visited us Fri
day night, when compared with the grass
hoppers, which infested the Northwestern
States of Missouri, Kansas and lowa, are
found to be greatly dissimilar.
From some specimens sent from IBwa
to Judge Brooks, the grasshoppers of
those parts are only an Inch in length
and of a dull reddish color, while ours are
three times the size of the former, and
exactly like the common grasshopper of
the fields. We hope their tour will be an
extended one, and that they will alight In
the midst of some ocean.
Sml Closing o*l Salt.
Yesterday about noon the irrepressible
Harrison appeared at the Festival and
took possession of the assets of the insti
tution that remained undisposed of, and
with his little hammer, real or figurative,
knocked things down “southwest and
crooked." He had a much fairer class of
bidders than we often see at his sales;
hence no one was surprised to see liberal
bidding. He did not forget bis commis
sions either, for when we met him be was
picking his teeth and looked "contented.”
The ladies are fully satisfied with the
result of their week’s work.
TBI SBABB FIBALI
OF THE ST, PAUL CHUBOH FESTIVAL.
Yesterday It closed. The scraps And
remnants were sold Bt suction; the Babies
were re-kissed and bye-byod sway; the
most popular merchant was permitted to
depart to hlB ordinary ptaoe of buslneas
and the ugly man was again consigned to
his quiet and to his stick; while the
Managers of the Festival betook them
selves, for a while, to their money boxes
to count the "returns." Of the returns
they certainly cannot complain—for the
most sanguine among them, at the com
mencement of the week, could not have
expected to realize a larger sum than waa
taken In. The exact figures, as reported
to us, are: receipts*l,3ll expenses about
s3oo—leaving nett $l,lOO. With tblsj sum
many useful things can be done; and
whatever objections some may have to
ohurohes raising money by such means,
all must feel gratified to know that this
fund Is In hands that will give It the best
direction.
"A Thing of Beauty le m Jwy Forever.”
The poetic quotation above may not be
literally true "forever,” but there Is no
question about the fact that Mrs. L. A.
T.ttw has a stock of Millinery, and Ladles'
Dress Goods of all sorts, that will be a
“Joy” to many appreciative hearts, this
spring.
Her Grand Opening Day—a day for
which the ladles have been waiting since
her retuin from Now York was announced
In the Timbs, will take place en next
Thursday, the 13th Inst. Then will be
displayed a stock of Hats and Bonnets of
the very latest spring style, and a large
variety of such other fancy goods as al
most every lady wants, and Just such as
but few can select with as much taste as
Mrs. Lee. So many beautiful things are
In her establishment, that the ordinary
masculine brain becomes too much con
fused in looking through them to be able
to do them half Justice, But our lady
friends will thank Mrs. Lee for letting
them know the day of the Grand Opening.

"Takes Is Out af the Wet."
A fine case of this character was shown
forth In Judge Redd's court, yesterday.
It Beems that a Harris county farmer
while in the city several days since, with
a large quantity of spirits on bsard,
thought he would take a game of cards,
falling In with a set of sharpers, luck ran
badly against him and It wasn’t long be
fore two pocket knives and a watch and
chain, besides a respectable amount of
money changed hands. In his boozy con
dition he went to sleep with
hlsoomrados In chance, and when he left
for home the next morning he took up
one of the knives which he lost the night
previous, of oourse oblivious of the fact
that it was not now his. The sharper did
not object to this, however, and he went
home. But pretty soon the Harris county
man sued out a possessory warrant
against them for the recovery of hts watch
and chain, and they being hard pressed,
sued out a warrant against him for steal
ing the pocket knife. As the case stood
thus, both parties dismissed warrants.

County Commissioner*. *
Tbe County Commissioners, Louis Gar
rard, W. G. Woolfolk and John A. Frazer,
and his honor, the Ordinary, Judge
Brooks, met yesterday at noon to trans
act their regular monthly business. sl,-
661.15 worth of orders, which were drawn
and Issued by Judge Brooks, were coun
tersigned by the Commissioners for pay
ment by the County Treasurer. Besides
this no other business of Importance was
carried on; the bridges were all reported
to be in good order, and the chain gang
will remain in the city for the present.
The Commissioners will meet on the
first Saturday In May.
THE BLESSED BASIS).
It Is seldom, even among the rougher
sox, that one sees sharper competition for
votes than was exalted at the Festival by
tho candidacy of somesweet little children
for prizes to be gained by the votes of
their friends. No registration was neces
sary, and only a poll tax of ten tents for
each vote was required; consequently
there was more repeating than Is toler
ated outside of the “bulldozed” districts.
The electioneering was so active, and
the electloneerers were so bewitching,
that many "old log, rollers” forgot what
they were about, and went up like gentle
“lambs to the altar” and voted, and vo
ted, and kept on voting, until all their
"fractional” had changed hands. If we
should ever want votes to get un office,
we should Ilko to have such workers en
listed In our behalf, as some of the Ba
bies hod—for then we should feel sure of
the plan. But yet, after all, some of the
little candidates were beaten—and we are
heartily sorry for It, for wo wanted all
of them to be elected. Little Misses An
nie Ellene Glenn and Annie May Bruce
were the victors; though all the others
deserved prizes too, for they were too
young and too sweet to suffer defeat.
■ T .
The Ladles or Columbus
are certainly fortunate in having their
lots cast in so pleasant a place as this,
where every whlin and wish, In the Milli
nery line can be so easily and so cheaply
gratified. On Thursday the 12th of this
month, Mrs. Colvin St Miss Donnelly will
OPEN FOB INSPECTION AND SALK, the
“handsomest line of millinery and fancy
goods evr brought to this city.” Their
stock of Bonnets and Ribbons are large
and In such bewildering variety that ovsry
taste, no mutter how fastldeous, can be
pleased. Don’t forget the time of the
opening, nor the rare novelties to be ex
hibited.
