HOW A BOULLKBB RAILROAD CORPORATION
KETTLE]) WITH AN HONEST URAJSOEB.
Chicago Tribune. 1
A horny-handed old farmer entered tbe
office ofone of the big railroad companies
Saturday and inquired for the man who
settled for bosses which was killed by
the locomotives of a bloated corporation.
They referred him to the Company’s coun
sel, whom having found he thus address
ed:
“Mister, I was driving home one even
ing last week—” "Been drinkiagf” sen
tentioualy questioned the lawyer. “I’m
centrepole of the local Tent of Rechn
bites,” said the farmer. “That doesn’t
answer my question,” replied the man of
law; "I saw a man who tva3 biling drunk
vote the Prohibition ticket last year.”
"Hadn’t tasted liquor since the big flood
of 1846,” said the old man. "Go ahead.”
“I will, ’Squire. And when I came to the
crossing of your soulless monopoly—it
was pretty dark—and, zip! along came
your train, no bells rung, no whistles
tooted, contrary to tbe statutes in such
cases made and provided, and agin tbe
Granger decisions, —whoop! away went
my off boss a scooting over the telegraph
wires. When I had dug myself out’n a
swamp some distance off and pucitied the
other critter, I found that thar oil-boss
was dead as Perry Smith, nothing valua
ble about him but his shoes, which mout
have brought, say eight cents for old iron.
Well '"“Well, you want pay for that
ere off-horse?” said the lawyer, with a
scarcely repressed sneer. "I kinder should,
you see,” replied tbe farmer trankly, "and
I don’t care about going to law about it,
though possibly I’d get a verdict; for
juries out in our town is mostly made up
of farmers, and they kinder help each
other as a matter of principle in these
cases of stock killed by railroad." “And
tliis’ere off boss,” said the counsel, mock
ingly, “was a Ilambletonian colt out of
an Abdallah mare with seventeen Mes
senger crosses, wasn’t he? He was rising
four years, as he had been for several
seasons past, and had shown 2:25| on a
half-mile track in the mud, hadn’t he?
And you bad been offered $16,500 for
him the day he was killed, but wouldn’t
take it, because you were going to win
all the purses in the Grand Circuit with
him, and then going to move out to
Nevada and buy a silver mine and a
Senatorsbip with the proceeds? O, I’ve
heard of that off-boss before.” “I guess
there’s a mistake somewhere, sonny,"
said the old farmer with an air of surprise;
“my boss was got by old man Butts’
roan-pacing hoss, Pride of Lemont, out’n
a wall-eyed, no-accouDt mare of my own,
and now that he’s dead, 1 may say that
he was 29 next grass. Trot? Why, Fred.
Erby's boss that he was lined for furious
driving of, was old Dexter along side of
him! Sixteen thousand dollars? Bless
your soul, do you think I’m a darn fool,
or any one else is? It is true I was made
an offer for him the last time I was in
town, and for the man looked kinder
simple, and you know how it is yourself
with boss trading, 1 asksd the cuss more’n
tbe animal might have been worth. I
asked him $65, but I’d have taken S4O ”
“Forty dollars!” gasped the lawyer, "forty
dollars?” Yes,” replied the farmer, meek
ly and apologetically, "it kinder looks a
a big sum, I know, for an old hoss, buk
that ere off hoss could pull a mighty good
load, considering. Then I was kinder
shook up, and the pole ol my wagon was
busted, and I bad to get tbe harness fixed,
and there’s my loss of time, and all that,
counts. Bay SSO, and its about square.”
The lawyer whispered softly to him
self, “Well, I’ll be bulldozed!” and filled
out a chock for SSOO. “Sir,” said be
covering the old man’s hand, "you are
the first honest man I have met in the
course of a legal experience of twenty
three years, the first farmer whose dead
horse was worth less than SI,OOO, and
couldn’t trot better than 2.34 without
training. Here also is a free pass for
yourself and your male heirs in a direct
line for three generations, and if you huve
a young boy to spare we will teach him
telegraphing and find him steady and lu
crative employment.” Tbe honest old man
took the check and departed, smiling his
homy leg with his brawny baud in tri
umph as he did so, with the remark: "I
knew I’d fetch him on the honest tack -
Last boss I had killed I swore was a trot
ter, and all I got was $lB5 and interest.
Honesty is the best policy.
—lf the average man’s gratitude were
measured by bis actions towards his phy
sician how narrow it would seem. Sick,
he’d give thousands to be made well;
well, he wants the doctor’s bill cut down
from SIOO to 50, and says he wasn't half
as sick anyway as he thought he was.
The Courier-Journal, with the malig
nant wit of a St. Louis paper, prints the
following quartette:
“Why weep. O tradesman? Cheer thou tip I
New flies will make the dullest saw go **
“Too late!’* the tradesman gasped and sobbed,
“I’ve had a margin in Chicago.”
And Wood of the Chicago Journal will
thus oome back at him next week:

Dr. Sehenck's standard Remedies.
The standard remedies for all diseeses
of tne lungs are Behenek's Pulmonic Syr
up, Beheuck’s Sea Weed Tonic, and
Behenek’s Mandrake Pills, and it taken
before the lungs are destroyed, a speedy
cure is efleeted.
To these three medicines Dr. J. H.
Schenck, of Philadelphia, owes his unri
valled success in tbe treatment of pulmo
nary diseases.
The Pulmonic Syrup ripens the mordid
matter In the lungs; nature throws it off
by an easy expectoration, for when the
phlegm or matter is ripe a slight cough
will throw it off, the patient has rest and
the lungs begin to heat.
To enable the Pulmonic Syrup todothis,
Schenek’s Mandrake Pills and Seh-nek’s
Sea Weed Tonte must be freely used to
cleanse the stomach and liver. Behenek’s
Mandrake Pills act on the liver, removing
Sll obstructions, relax the gall bladder,
the bile starts freely, and the liver is re
lieved.
Behenek’s Sea Weed Tonic is a gentle
stimulant and alterative; the alkali of
which it is composed mixes with the food
and prevents souring. It assists the di
gestion ky toning up the stomach to a
healthy so that the food and
the Pulmonic' Syrup will make good
blood, then the lungs heal, and the patient
will surely get well if care is taken to pre
vent fresh Cold.
All who wish to consult Dr. Schenck,
either personally or by letter, can do so at
his principal office, corner of Sixth and
Arch, streets, Philadelphia, every Mon
day.
