A Romantic Tale.
A delicious love Idyl comes from Wayne
countv, Ky. A stalwart young Kentuck
ian of knightly beating, passing through
Monticello street ten years ago, was notic
ed by a young girl silting at the window
of the most aristocratic house of the town,
and she fell in love with him at first sight.
She had wealth, culture and beauty; he
was poor with only his splendid pyhsioue
and intrepid soirit, and was then on his
way to seek his fortune ns a cattle herder
in Texas. There he soon rose to be pro
prietor of a ranche, ami took his money
to California and hunted for gold. After
many ups and downs, fortune favored
him" and he found himself the owner of a
silver mine at Silver City, New Mexico.
The girl, meanwhile, had bloomed into a
rarely beautiful woman, bad developed
unusual literary ability and become a con
tributor to the Apostolic Times, the organ
of the Reformed church published at
Lexington. By some means the girl had
learned who the unconscious object of
her fancy was, and, though he had never
seen her, the two corresponded through
out the ten years. Bhe never wrote a word
ol her personal attractions nor latnily, nor
did he speak of his good fortune; he had
a mind well stored with judicious reading,
and their correspondence was only that
of book-loving friends. A few weeks
ago, however, the love she had always
bore him bore its fruits. He wrote her
Sroposing marriage, and soon followed
is letter to her Kentucky home, where
he saw her lor the first lime. Recently they
were married, and Miss Annie Berry,
that was, will be surprised to find, on
reaching Silver City, that her husband
It B. Metcalf, is the greatest capitalist in
New Mexico.

New York Bun.]
Mrs. Victoria M. McCloskey’s father,
who was also named McCloskey, was a
wealthy Georgian, and before the war
was called the “Colton King” of the
South. In her early youth she had three
children, Cerita Jackson, Victoria Cham
berlain and Herman F. Jackson. After
tbe war the only vestige of her father’s
property that had been saved was a trust
fund in the bands of Senator Cbristiancy
of Michigan, real estate in Genesaee
county, with her children, bat having
been married to Antonins F. McClosk.v,
despite tbe opposition ot her children, she
came to this city to live, in 1871. A few
months afterwards she was summoned to
Geneßee.and was much annoyed at find
ing herself the objeet of much staring.
This was explained when papers were
served upon her in lunacy proceedings in
stituted by her children. She tore up
the papers and came to New York. Soon
thereafter Jasper V. Lewis was appointed
committee of her person and estate, and
he took possession of her property. She re
ceived only $25 in money and the pay
ment of about $125 indebtedness incurred
by her. She has lived with her husband,
who is a salesman in a merchantile house
in this city. She was before Judge Don
ohue yesterday, asking for the appoint
ment of a receiver pending further litiga

A Fort Griffin correspondent of the
Galveston News says that a vast number
of men are making a living by
buffalo bunting. Also, that recently a
party of forty-seven men went out in
the northwestern part of the State to
capture about 400 head of horses and
mules belonging to them, and at the same
time to whip a party of Indians for hav
ing scalped one of their number. With a
two week’s scout guided by a Mexican,
they found the Indians, about 150, forti
fied in holes burrowed in the ground,
when the forty-seven men commenced to
fire on them. The firing continued four
hours, when the hunters had to retreat
on account of scarcity of food and water.
Tney los one man. The Indians’ loss is
not ascertained. The Indians have a com
plete fortification, as if prepared by na
ture for protection. It is a canyon
about forty miles long, and wide in pro
portion. It is densely covered with a
Spanish cactus; only one piace of en
trance is known by the hunters, and they
occupy that place. They can retreat back
for thirty miles, and then stand off five
hundred men. In the midst are peaks,
from which they can overlook the coun
try for miles. The Indians who are
doing this are a scattered portion of the
Comanches. They are called Cohattes.
A Saddening Sight. —A fatherless
Danbury hoy was scalping a com with a
razor on Sunday morning, when his
mother caught him by the hair, yanked
him from the chair, and electrified him
by the startling remark : “What do you
s’pose your father in heaven ’ll think to
look down aod see his own son a hackin’
corns with his razor?”
The sweetest thing in the way of a
scarf for yoang men that has beeD
brought out this Spring is a duck of a
thing iu black or navy-blue satin,
that covers the shirt' front, and falls
back over the shoulders in two long,
swallow-tails, thus taking the place ot a
dress coat for evening wear.
Ur. Bchenck's Standard Remedies.
The standard remedies for all diseases
of tne lungs are Schenck’s Pulmonic byr
up, Schenck’s Sea. Weed Tonic, and
Schenck’s Mandrake Pills, and if taken
before the lungs are destroyed, a speedy
cure is effected.
To these three medicines Dr. J. H.
Schenck, of Philadelphia, owes his unri
valled success in the treatment of pulmo
nary diseases.
The Pulmonic Byrup ripens the mordid
matter In the lungs; nature throws it off
by an easy expectoration, for when the
phlegm or matter is ripe *.aUght cough
will throw it off, the patleiHHls rest and
the lungs begin to heal.
To enable the Pulmonic Syrup to do this,
Schenck's Mandrake Pills and Schenck's
Sea Weed Tonic must be freely used to
cleanse the stomach and liver. Schenck’s
Mandrake Pills act on the liver, removing
all obstructions, relax the gall bladder,
the bile starts freely, and the diver is re

Schenck’s Sea Weed Tonic is a gentle
stimulant and alterative; the alkali of
which It Is composed mixes with the food
and prevents souring. It assists the di
gestion ky toning up the stomach to a
healthy condition; so that the food and
the Pulmonic Syrup will make good
blood, then the lungs heal, and the patient
will surely get well if care is taken to pre
vent fresh Cold.
