Dearßih: Some friend hue sent ns a
copy of your pa|ier of April 18, containing
reference to coal oil rejected by the new

In justice to the Columbus Oil Cos., which
Company sells most of the oil sold In Co

the last tank of oil received by them was
manufactured by us, and has been ap
proved by the Inspectors. We havo no
doubt of Its being proper standard, al
though It very often happens that anew

that Mr. Fontaine will approve the oil we

We write this note In justice to Mr.

MEMORIAL SAY.
Thursday Is Memorial Day, the time
designated by general consent, and en
dorsed by the Legislature of the State of
Georgia for our people to pay their an
nual tribute to our Confederate dead.
This day was suggested as an appropri
ate day by one of the noble women who
Illustrated Georgia's patriotism, and
whose memory Columbus delights to
honor, making It doubly dear to Colum
bus.
We know the day will bo generally ob
served, and that the coming day will be
ushnrod In with all of the echtl that has at
tended previous occasions.
A rare and rich treat Is lu store for all
who attend the speaking at the Opera
House. Capt. J. R. McCleskey, the silvor
tongued orator of Georgia will deliver the
address. One who knows him, and lives
thirty miles distant, says ho will walk
here to hear him make the address.
An elegant treat Is in store for all of us,
to hear an acknowledged perfect orator,
and a speaker who lends the heart he en
listed In the “Lost Cause" to this sacred
and hallowed occasion.
AS ELOPEMENT.
A Verdant but Interesting 4'miple.
Yesterday morning early, a young
couple, Just arrived on the train from
Troy, Ala., presented themselves before
Judge Brooks, Ordinary, to be married.
The Judge sent them down to Justice Mc-
Cahey's ofllce, where the lattor magis
trate fixed everything to their satisfac
tion.
Judge Brooks, while questioning them,
could only obtain from them the fact that
they came from the neighborhood of Troy,
Ala.
The girl, who is about sixteen years
of age, was entirely reticent, being alto
gether unable to give a reason for the
elopement—which, the young man stated,
was on account of the unwillingness of
their parentß to the proposed match.
The young benedict showed his verdan
cy by telling Judge Brooks that he was
"afraid he would be lost In such a large
city as this is." But his fears were dis
pelled, for he was later seen walking arm
In arm with his newly acquired treasure,
down Broad stroet. If sober and Indus
trious, as we hope he Is—and if his wife is
sensible and frugal, as sho should be-all
may yet be well. Though we think their
start is one of questionable propriety.
Dental surgery.
We ask attention to the dental card of
Dr. Mason to be found in another place.
Dr. Mason has but lately come among us,
but he has come to utay, and he has
brought with him a reputation for skill In
his profession that he will find, a gootl
business capital, from which wo trust he
will realize a liberal return. The Doctor
Is aware that In coming to Crlumbus he
will come in competition with some of the
first dentists in the State, but relying on
his own skill he feels confident that his
work will favorably compare with the
best. He guarantees satisfaction.
Eyuk>rt'< ll Up. Town.
Mr. Rynehart gives notice that he has
moved his bakery up-town, on the corner
of Oglothorpe street facing Hamilton's
and the Centennial Corner. He has an
excellent stand—convenient to a large
portion of the up-town bread-eaters; and
ho Invites them all to como and get bread
of him. He makes a good article.

Prize Drill on Wednesday Night.
Owing to the late arrival of the prize
plume, the drill of the Columbus Guards
has been postponed until Demorrow
night, when It will take place in their ar
mory.
To this drill, we presimio, no one except
the judges will be invited, as the armory
ia not capacious enough to contain a large
crowd of invited guesti.
The plume which had been ordered and
has just lately arrived, Is very handsome
Indeed. It Is a trl-oolor oue.red-white
and-blue, and eighteen Inches in longth.
A Day's Itrm*.
The weather promises to be on its very
best bohavlor for the 2<ith and for
other purposes.
The trains that came to the yestorday
brought a smaller passenger list than
usual.
The hotels are not orowded, though
their registers show a liberal patronage
since the fast mail schedule was adopted.
Dust is again disposed to show the in
quisitive mind whloh way the wind blows.
It also shows the open eye where it may
be found.
The “boarders” are glad to 11ml that
chickens, ducks and guineas are consid
ered as choap as boef—and no tougher.
Proper cooking and teeth reset, with good
jaw power, can get on moderately well
with either.

Caiwtll Magazine', NyfvtMisness ia, one
of the prices we have fo paylor civilization;
the nervous savage is a being unheard of
For this disorder, which is partly of mental
and partly of bodily nature, relief is sought
in various ways, and amongst these we may
place the employment of narcotics The
temporary relief afforded by these drugs is
very apt to lead those who suffer from ner
vous sensations fto put too much trust in,
and resort too frequently to them. In the
long run they prove most destructive to
health. Their use has of late been more fre
quent as to threaten society with a serious
evil. It has been boldly contended that
chloral is to be found in the work-boxes and
baskets of nearly every lady in the west end
ot the melropolis, “to calm her nerves. ’ JYo
doubt this is an exaggeration, but it is a fact
that in New York chloral punch has become
an institution scarcely a year after the in
troduction ol{chloral into medical practice,
and now it turns out that Germany—-‘sober,
orderly, paternally ruled Germany"—has
such a thing as morphia disease spreading
among its population. The symptoms are
not unlike those of opium-eating. Experi
ence suggests that persons suffering from
this disease should at once be deprived of the
drug. Their wilftilness and liability to re
lapse, however, are so great great, that it is
said that only about twenty-live per cent,
have been seen to recover in a large series of
cases.
