From tin 1 Joplin (Mo.) News.]
Mr. Jack Armil, flic contractor oil tho
Joplin Ktllrmul, was in this city yester
day, having just returned from a business
trip to Louisville and Cincinnati, where
lie met with a misfortune which came
near terminating his existence. Shortly
after he arrived at Louisville he had occa
sion to look up some old contracts, and
while hunting around in a box of old pa
pers he noticed an insect crawling on his
right hand, lie naturally brushed it off,
but as he did so the insect stung him on
the little linger. Almost instantly the
hand began to inSame at a fearlul rate, and
in a lew moments he became dizzy and
perfectly blind. A physician was imme
diately sent for, who examined the hand
and pronounced it a scorpion sting. An
tidotes were administered and Armel at
once conveyed to Cincinnati and placed
under care of another physician, who
finally brought him around all right, but
pronounced it a narrow escape. Had the
insect stung him upon either of the two
larger lingers, the physician said uo pow
er on earth could have saved him. As it
was, Armel thinks he had a close call,
is thankful to recover, lie still carries
his hand in a sling, but will soon be able
to use the member. A scorpion sting is
almost certain death.

Washington, 21. -Secretary Thompson
to-day laid before the Cabinet indisputa
ble evidence that either Secretary llobe
son was a fool, or that he had made some
very curious entries on tho books of the
Navy Department, and which are not sus
capable of explanation. Tho Ex-Secretary,
it appears, kept no account of the pro
ceeds which accrued to the naval fund
through the sale of the old Philadelphia
Navy yard and several condemned war
vessels. Secretary Thompson, in language
more forcible than elegant, apprised
Hayes and his colleagues that lie discov
ered the discrepancies soon after lie took
hold of the Naval Portfolio, and that lu
had one of two things to do, viz: either
to cover up Robeson's track, and by so
doing assume Robeson's liabilities, or to
make the charger of his short-coming to
the Cabinet, to the end that Robeson
might be prosecuted, lie made up iiis
mind that he would not carry Robeson's
iniquities, and finally have them charged
to him, and hence presented the case to
the attention of Hayes for instructions.
A long conference over the matter was
had, and It was finally decided to trans
mit to Congress a statement of the con
dition in which the new Administration
found the Navy Department, to tue end
that it might be relieved of the odium
in which the retiring Secretary left it.
Robeson says that he courts the fullest
scrutiny into his official acts, and the
chance is decidedly in his favor that he
will face a Court and a corrupt District
of Columbia jury before his skirts are
entirely clear. —Cincinnati Enquirer.

Since the troublous times of the
“Lava Beds” but little has been
heard of the Modoes. The tribe,
never very large, is rapidly becoming
extinct. At the present time it is
said to number in all but one hun
dred and seventeen souls, fifty-four
of which are males and sixty-three
females. They are located on n
fertile tract of land containing 4,000
acres, in the northeast corner of the
Shawnee reserve in the Indian Terri
tory, and have turned their attention
to agriculture, which they pursue
industriously and with success. They
have a large and valuable crop on
hand, in proof of their energy as
farmers. The Government has ex
pended nearly $2,000 in providing
them with schools. It is possible
that their existence may be protract
ed by the change and ameliorated
condition in which the Modoes find
t hemselves ; but much more powerful
tribes have entirely disappeared, and
it is onlv a question of time when
they will follow suit. —Morning Call.
The blackberry industry in Geor
gia, North Carolina and other south
ern states is about to open, and the
local papers are showing what a bon
anza is in danger of ruuniug waste.
The little town of Salem N. C., con
taining only about 2,000 inhabitants,
has shipped during three years over
3,000,000 pounds of dried blackberries,
for which neatly half a million dollars
was received. This was equal to
over 9,000 bales of cotton at 10 cents
a pound and is a resource certainly
not to be despised.
Experiments in raising hogs upon grapes
have recently been tried in California.
An experiment upon a single hog showed
that, ted exclusively on grapes, it gained
forty-three pounds in twenty-seven days,
or one and a half pounds per day. The
grapes were of the finest kinds, such
as,the Flame Tokays, Muscats and Black
Hamburg*.— Geo. Grange.
“The voice of the people,” is a big
thing, but the man who is fishing for the
position of postoffice clerk often mistakes
his own brays for the wild cheers of forty
million freemen.

The standard remedies for all diseases
of tne lungs are Sehenek’s Pulmonic Syr
up, Scheoek’s Sea Weed Tonic, and
hchenek’s Mandrake Pills, and it taken
before the lungs are destroyed, a speedy
cure is effected.
To these three medicines Dr. J. 11.
Sehenck, of Philadelphia, owes his unri
valled success in the treatment of pulmo
nary diseases.
The Pulmonic Syrup ripens tho mordid
matter in the lungs ; nature throws it off
by an easy expectoration, for when the
phlegm or matter is ripe a slight cougli
will throw It off, tho patient has rest and
the lungs begin to heal.
To enable the Pulmonic Syrup to do this,
SchencK’s Mandrake Pills and
Sea Weed Tonic must be freely used to
cleanse the stomach arid liver. Schenek's
Mandrake Pills act on the liver, removing
all obstructions, relax the gall bladder,
the bile starts freely, and tho liver is re
lieved.
Sehenek’s Sea Weed Tonic is a gentle
stimulant and alterative; the alkali of
which It is composed mixes with the food
and prevents souring. It assists the di
gestion ky toning up tho stomach to a
healthy condition; so tuat the food and
tho Pulmonic Syrup will make good
blood, then the lungs heal, and thepatient
will surety get well if care is taken to pre
vent fresh Cold.
All who wish to consult Dr. Sehenck,
either personally or by letter, can do so at
his principal office, corner of Sixth and
Arch, streets, Philadelphia, every Mon
day.
