Tkt Fire Department.
Tho annual inspection of the Columbus
Fire Department will be hclil publicly on
the 10th (Thursday.)
This day is usually, in all our cities,
considered tho one In which contests be
tween the several companies should be
made in racing, throwing streams of wa
ter ami In scaling buildings upon ladders,
etc. This part of the inspectlou will be
omitted this year, and those who onjoy
witnessing those oonteets will be deprived
of this pleasure; but the Fire Department
of Columbus is composed of mon of too
much spirit to permit tho annual parade
to pass off withoat Introducing some fea

and to the publio. If our merchants and
real estate owners, insurance compunies
aud othor friends of the department would
raise a small fund aud offer Ist, 2d and 3d
prizes to be contended for, it would add
much to tho zest with which the various
companies would handle their machines.
This thing has occasionally been done In
past years, and would not be amiss this
dull yoar.

MOW A FREE-AND-EASY GREEK CLERGY
MAN TAUGHT HIS FLOCK A LESSaN.
The Husslun clergy of the Greek
Church niUstleail fi ee and-msy lives,
uncording io English accounts, In u
Dew book, culled ’•.Sketches of Rus
sian Life,” there is the following
aoi using anecdote:
"Ail out the lull iTriest thru threw
their cards o(* thed tables, and
rose, saying, *A fresh deul after
Church service.’ (It was Sunday
morning.)
’’•No, no,’ he said, ‘keep your
hand, partner ; I shall keep mine—it
is a good one—and we shall play the
game after our return. Here, Vas
sill; give me a towel—wet. That
will do. Now my robes there, that
comb. And now go every one to
your posts.’
“Thus saying, be proceeded with a
firm step to the church by a private
entrance.
“As tie. left the room I Haw him
place hlsgpod hand of cards within
hid snored robes, under the Inside
fasti'rdug. He Was evidently deter
mined nut to lose sight of his trumps,
and carried them on ids person into
the church. I ran round to the front
entruee, and was just iri time to wit
ness the commencement of the ser
vice. It is a wonder judgment did not
fall on the chief priest; and it did In
h wav. Atone part of the service,
justus lie was stepping on the plat
form, lie put his hand inside his
robe to puli out his handker
chief, and as he drew it out the cards
came also unbidden, and fell scatter
ed over the altar floor. This would
have paralyzed any ordinary man,
but that priest never moved for a
moment. He looked coolly at the
cards, then steadily at the people,
much as to say, “You all see that,
take notice of it; I shall tell you
about it by and by.” He then con
tinued the services. At the close he
pointed to the cards, then beckoned
to a little peasant boy, witii a short
skirt of coarse linen and trousers to
match, not very clean, who had been
crossing and betiding beside a poor
peasant woman, bifi mother.
“ ‘Cotne here!’
The boy went.
“Turning to the congregation, he
said: ’I shall give yo( a lesson you
will not forget for tome time. You
see tliesc cards lying on the floor?
Do you think I put them there for
nothing? We snail see. What is
y&flr flan#! trif bdf?”
“ ‘l’uter Petrovitch.’
“‘Well, Peter Petrovitch, go and
pick up one of those cards you see on
the floor, and brink it to me. There,
that will do. Now tell me, Peter
Petrovitch, what card is this?’
“ ’The ace of spades.’ said the boy,
with ready knowledge.
“ ‘Very good, Peter Petrovitch.
Bring me another. What card is
that?’
“ ‘The queen of spad-s,’said Peter.
“ ‘How well yoii know them,Peter!
Bring me another. And what may
that be?’
“ 'The ten of hearts.’
That will do, Peter, the son of
Peter. Now turn round and look at
this picture. Can you tell me what
saint it represents?’
“The boy scratched at his head,
then shrugged his little shoulders,
lifting th.-m up to his ears, then
scratched his head again, and said :
'“I know not.’
“‘Now, look at this one; who is
this ?’
“The same answer,
“ ‘And this ?’
“ ‘I cannot tell.’
“ ‘That will do, Peter, the son of
Peter; you may go to your mother.’
Turning to the people, he continued,
‘Do you know now for what purpose
I put these cards on the floor? Do
you not think shame on yourselves ?
Tell me, sny is it. not disgraceful and
scandalous that 1 he nice white-haired
little boy can tell me in a moment
the name of every card lu the pack,
and he not know the name of one ol
the blessed saints! Oh shame, shame
on ye, so to bring up the young after
all the good teaching I nave given
ye! Go away and learn the lesson I
have given you this blessed day.
Don’t forget it, and force me to bring
cards into this holy place again.
Vassill put the other cards np, and
keep them for me.’
“So, with solemn step he left the
■dhur-'h to play out his interrupted
game.”
