Look into that remarkable work of
Commodore Maury’s—Maury’e Phys
ical GeOßraphy -we see so muoh val
uable and excltlDß Information wo
never fail to wonder that so few peo
ple read it—especially when so little
reading gives such unbounded Infor
mation. Below is an extract:
"The selvas of the Amazon and
the forests of Orinoco are as remark
able in their way as the pampas and
the llanos.
Here the vegetable kingdom dis
plays Itself In great glory.
Air, earth, and water havo each
their flora, and all are most luxuri
ant.
Here is found the unique Victoria
Regia, an enormous water lily, u
single leaf of which is large enough
to float a mau. It has a superb white
flower—the most gigantic that
blooms.
Air plants with the most fantastic
shapes, beautiful leaves, and curi
ous flowers, hang suspended from
the branches and festoon the forest.
The trees and undergrowth stand
so thick that often the voyager has to
spend the night iu his canoe because
there is no room, on account of the
trees, to land and light, a Are.
The trees are studded with para
sites, twined, and interlaid, and mat
ted with vines aud creepers so thickly
that the tree tops form a roof over
which the monkeys travel for miles
without once coming to earth. It is
here and there only that the sun can
And a loop-hole through which to
dart a ray.
Among the trees of the Amazon
and the Orinoco are found the cow
tree, with its milk; the bread fruit
tree, with its loaf; the candle tree,
with its taper; the blanket tree, with
its coverlets; the whiskey tree, with
its toddy; the silk tree,with its floss;
the algurola tree, with its beaus,
which furnishes the natives with both
bread and beer for themselves and
provender for their cattle; the iudia
rubber tree, the soap tree.
The fruit of the Copercinia palm is
wax. Then there is the crythoxylou
cocoa, with its wonderful leaf that
prevents fatigue and stays both hun
ger and thirst. Besides these are 25
varieties of the chinona tree, with its
fragrant blossoms and medicinal
bark, and a flora that is enriched
with a great yariety of palms, ant)
nuts, aud drugs, aud blossoms, and
resius, affordingornann ntal, and in
cense weeds of rare beauty ami ex
quisite odor.
In Venezuela alone there are not
less than 180 varieties of plants that
are cultivated, while in the forest are
found 36 different kinds that yield
valuable gums and resins, 16 that are
medicinal, and 240 that are esteemed
either as ornamental, dye or useful
woods.
The wonderful, rich and fertile
country that lies between the Cari
bean sea and the Rio de la Plata is
admirably adapted also for the pro
duction of every useful plant, fruit
crop and vegetable—save ony the
Maguey of Mexico, which is cultiva
ted anywhere within the tropics,
small grains, pulse of endless varie
ty, mandioca, the mulberry, palina
christi, opium, spices, grapes, olives,
mate, potatoes, figs, bread fruit, or
anges, pineapples, bananas, tama
rinds,avecarte or alligator pear, man
goes, pomegranates, grandillos, ap
ples, pears, cheremoyas, plums, cher
ries, citrons, melons, and indeed al
most everything that grows out of
the earth except the mosses aud the
lichens of the polar regions. Yet
even these are not wanting to com
plete this surpassing catalogue, for
they are to be found on the mountain
sides above the snow line.
The waters of 'hese intertropieal
regions are as prolific as the soil, and
the animal kingdom, with its multi
tudinous genera, vies with the vege
table, while the mineral kingdom is
not surpassed in wealth by either.
The California papers, which up to a
few weeks ago were very gloomy over
the wheat crop prospects in that State,
are now indulging in their annual hurrah
over the promise of a good yield. The
San Francisco B’lUetin of the Ist instant
puts the gratifying statement thus: “In all
the important grain growing sections, ex
cept the Upper San Joaquin and t-alinas
vallevs, the crop is up to the average. In
that portion of San Joaquin valley with
in San Joaquin county the yield is almost
equal to the crop oflast year. From San
Jose we leara that the wheat crop iu the
Santa Clara valley is fully two-thirds an
average one. From all the counties in
the valley of the Sacramento and in North
ern California the reports tell us of yield
up to or beyond the average of the for
mer years.” From all portions of the
United States similar good news is re
corded. There never was a better wheat
crop in Alabama than the present one
War or no war, the price of bread will
have to come down.
Jeff. Davis Wins a Suit.— The Su
preme Court or Mississippi has de
cided that Jefferson Davis, by a resi
dence of thirty years ami otuer acts
of ownership, acquired title to the
plantation known a.s "Brierfleld,”
notwithstanding Joseph E. Davis, his
brother, Dever conveyed to him the
title thereof; that when the latter
sold his plantation he became indebt
ed to the former in the sum of $70,000,
the price thereof; and that Jefferson
Davis is not estopped by the fact that
having become executor of bis broth
er’s will, or by any acts of executor
ship done by him, or by auy other
thing, from asserting his claim to the
proceeds of sale of said plantation
against the estate of Joseph E. Davis,
hut is entitled to be paid the same.
A bright and beautiful child shows
in its very expression that its baby
hood was not asseciated with opium,
cordials, etc.,—for the continued use
of opium is antagonistic to health,
That valuable and highly recom
mended remedy for the disorders of
taabvhood, Dr. Bull’s Baby Syrup,
is absolutely free from morphia and
all other dangerous agents andean
he safely employed at all times.
Only 25 cents per bottle.
Ur. Sclienck's Pulmonic Acid,
Sea Weed Tonic, and Mandrake Pills.—
These medicines have undoubtedly per
formed more cures of consumption than
any other remedy known to the Ameri
can public. They are compounded of
vegetable ingredients.and contain nothing
which can be injurious to the human con
stitution. Other remedies advertised as
cures for consumption, probably contain
opium, which is a somewhat dangerous
drug in ali eases, and if taken freely by
consumptive patients, it must do great
injury; for Its tendency is to confine the
morbid matter in the system, which, of
course, must make a cure impossible.
Schenck’s Pulmonic Syrup is warranted
not to contain a particle of opium; it is
composed oi powerful but harmless herbs,
which act on the lungs, liver, stomach,
and blood, and thus correct all morbid
secretions, and expel all the diseased mat
ter from the body. These are the only
mean3 by which consumption ean be,
cured, aud as Sehenek’s Pulmonic Syrup,
Sea Weed Tonic, and Mandrake Pills are
the only medicines which operate in this
way. it is obvious they are the only gen
uine cure for Pulmonary Consumption.
Each bottle of this invaluable medicine is
accompanied by full directions. Dr.
Schenek is professionally at his principal
office, corner Sixth and Arch Streets
Philadelphia, every Monday, where ali
letters for advice must be addressed.
