Ii wits remembered afterwards that lie
had a sneakiug, low-down look, anil the
buys were sorry that they . didn’t arrest
him as the Nathan murderer. He called
at the Ninth Avenue Station and asked if
they had an aquarium there, and S. they
didn’t want a Lake St. Clair frog so put
in it, and he added.
‘Gentleman, it is a frog which 1 caught
myself, and lie really ought to be on ex
hibition. 1 never saw a frog of his size
lie fore.’
‘How large is it?’ inquired a sergeant,
instinctively glancing towards the top of
the coal stove.
‘Gentleman', I hate to give you the fig
ures, because I’m a stranger,’ replied the
Ulan.
‘There’s some old whoppers up in the
lake,’ put in one of the relief squad. ‘l’ve
seen ’em as bigas a stove cover, and even
bigger.’
•Well, someone ought to have this
frog who can leed him up well,’ said the
stranger. ‘I ain't much on natural science,
and jve seen about all there is to see,
but this lrog—great heavens! Home mail
ought to take him round the country.’
’How did you catch him?' asked the
captain.
'liuu him down with a tug and threw a
fish net over him.’
‘And he’s a monster, eh? ’
A monster! Well, I don’t want to give
you dimensions. Three reporters were at
my house last night to get his length over
all, breadth of beam anil cairying capaci
ty, but I wouldn’t let them in. 1 don’t
care lor the glory of the capture, hut sim
ply desire the advancement of
al interest of the Stale.'
•I’ve heard sailors tell of seeing frogs
up there as large as a nail keg, but I
thought they were lying,’ observed the
sergeant.
‘Nail keg! Why, d'ye suppose I'd come
around here with a flog which you could
put into a nail-keg!’
'I suppose he’d go into a barrel,’ Hem
, blingly remarked ihe sergeant.
’Gentlemen, you may have sailed across
Lake St. Clair,' coldly replied the strait
ger, ‘but it’s plain to me that you never
shoved a boat through the marshes.
Would 1 fool away time on a frog no lar
ger than a barrel? Would a tug boat chase
such a frog?’
‘I shouldn’t he a hit surprised if this
frog was as large as a hogshead,' said the
Captain; W’ve seen 'em up there eyen
larger than that.'
'A hogshead! Gentleman, I see that you
don’t care for this lrog, you are willing
that 1 should ship it away to some other
town. Good-bye, gentleman.’
Hold on!’ called the Captain, holding
out his last cigar. ‘We believe you, ol
course. If you said this frog was as large
as a wagon-box I should believe you. for
I’ve seen ’em up there fully as large as
that. Please give us the dimensions ol
this frog.’
The man lit his cigar, took a pill box
from his vest pocket, and shaking out a
frog not over three days transformed
from a pollywog, he quietly observed;
‘Gentlemen, get out your tape-lines!’
When they rose up he hud vanished.
Not a single baton him.
One of Judge Hardaway’s mammoth
cabbages exhibited at the Fair upon be

two well formed, well developed heads,
averaging the size of a mail’s fist.
We challenge Geo. P. Woods, or any
other bucolic gentleman in Georgia to
beat this. Trot out your cabbage, gourd
or snake stories. While on the subject,
we might as well mention that the Judge
had on exhibition twelve head ol cabbage
which weighed in the aggregate, two hun
dred and four pounds; one alone weigh
ing twenty-four pounds. A lumip from
the same garden lipped the beam at 28
lbs.
By way of parenthesis, and to show
that even those figures would not win we
will state that the Judge got beat on both
cabbages and turnips, Mr. S. L. Ilayes
taking the premium on the tirst, and Mr.

Itr. Schenck’s Pulmonic Acid,
Sea Weed Tonic, and Mandrake Pills.—
These medicines have undoubtedly per
formed more cures of consumption than
any other remedy known to the Ameri
can public. They are compounded of
vegetable ingredients,and contain nothing
which can be injurious to the human con
stitution. Other remedies advertised as
cures for consumption, probably contain
opium, which is a somewhat dangerous
drug in alt cases, and if taken freely by
consumptive patients, it must do great
injury ; for its tendency is to coniine the
morbid matter in the system, which, of
course, must make a cure impossible.
Schenck's Pulmonic Syrup is warranted
not to contain a particle of opium; it is
composed of powerful but harmless herbs,
which act on the lungs, liver, stomach,
and blood, and tiius correct all morbid
secretions, arnl expel all the diseased mat
ter from the body. These are the only
means by which Consumption can be
cured, and as Schenck’s Pulmonic Syrup,
Sea W r eed Tonic, and Mandrake Pills are
the onlv medicines which operate in this
way, it is obvious they are the only gen
uine cure for Pulmonary Consumption.
Each bottle of this invaluable medicine is
accompanied by full directions. Dr.
Schenck is professionally at tiis principal
office, corner Sixth and Arch Streets,
Philadelphia, every Monday, where all
letters for advice must be addressed.
