How the Fever was Carried
to Oallipolis.
The Intcrird Tugboat at her Wharf.
The tugboat James 1). Porter left
New Orleans some live weeks ago,
with a crew of llfteen men on board.
Yellow fever broke out among them
on the way up, and before reaching
Louisville five of them died, Several
more were suffering on their arrival
here with more or less severe attacks
or the disease, and were taken to tbe
United States Marine Hospital, just
within the city limits. Others of the
crew had deserted, and not
enough were left to navigate
the boat to Pittsburgh, where she
is owned. Andy Armstrong, an old
riyer man here, agreed to ship
aboard of her, and succeeded in em
ploying eight other men—one lately
released from the penitentiary—to
assist him. They started from Lou
isville August 12. Bofore they got
to Cincinnati the engineer wus down
with the fever, and there two doctors
volunteered to oome aboard and,
nurse him. That night the fever de -
veloped Itself in thirteen of the crew,
four of those Shipped at Louisville
being among the number, aud one of
the doctors, frightened, left the boat
Arrived at Oallipolis, some dis
tance from Cincinnati, hardly one of
the crew besides Armstrong wus
able to leave hid bunk. There an
attempt was made to put the boat
ashore, but a crowd of citizens, arm
ed wltu shot guus, threatened to
shoot any man wno tried to leave her.
They offered provisions and medical
suoplius, however, and the
boat as tied to tbe shore,
guarded night and day by
a citiz n patrol. The thirteen who
were sick with fever died one by one;
the rest of the crew, except Arm
strong, escaped by swimming, how
ever, to the Kentucky shore, and he
was left absolutely alone in tbe float
ing pest bouse, with the tlead around
him. Tne last victim the guard would
not allow him to bury even at tne
river’s brink, so be weighted the
body with iiou and threw it over the
boat’s side.
Then he, too, fell in, and the local
doctor, who kept waten with the
guard, persuaded them to allow the
patient to he brought ashore. But
they would not allow him to be kept
there. Bo the doctor put him in a
K, drove him ten miles down
ter, aud there paid a boatman
ten dollars to row bltn across to tne
Kentucky shore. Then, how he
hardly knows, he made nis way to
Louisville, and has since been nursed
into hsaltn again.
Five or the seven whoescapsd from
the Porter died of the fever after
leaving her. The boat was left with
no one to take care of her until an
agent of the owner came down from
Pittsburgh, had her thoroughly dis
infected, and will take her up the
river as soon as a crew can be got
aboard. Her death list from the
time she left New Orleans numbered
twenty-three.
t A New Kind ok Tux.—'Teetotalers
soil tlie advocates of temperance gener
ally will be interested to learn tlmt a
discovery ol an impor.ant nature is re
ported from Asia Minor. A plant wliicb
produces tea of excellent quality lias, it
is stated, been found growing in abund
ance, but in a wild uacultivated slate, iu
tbe neighborhood of the city ofTrebizond.
Tea made front the leaves of this plant
is said to posses* all the virtues and
aroma of tea grown iu China. Two thou
sand “okea” were speedily disposed of in
the local market the other day, chiefly to
Persians, who are gloat tea-drinker-, and,
recognizing the merits of the Trubtzond
tea, are buying tbe produce of the newly
discovered plant and sending it to their
own country. Tea was sold at twenty
pi ois I res the oke, but if properly prepar
ed would fetch a much higher price. The
Villagers have hitherto merely dried the
leaves iii tliesuu —i process which leaves
the plant with all iis natural bitterness.
Tue Governor of Treb znnd, foreseeing
the great advantage to the country which
is likely to arise by eucouaging the growth
ol the tea-plant, has asked the govern
to annul the forest dues if demanded by
the woods and forest authorities, on the
ground that, the leaves of the plant
being picked from the bushes growing on
the river banks, the new industry does
not fairly come within the forest laws.
On the other hand, a lax of 20 per centum
i9 talked of as about to be imposed on the
production of Trebizond tea; and if this
intention is carried into effect the villagers
will not be encouraged to start in business
as tea merchants on an extensive scale.
