THE HUMAN PULAE.
Baltimore gun.
Puke is a tbrol biog of the arteries
caused by intcruoitting impulses
communicated to the blooi by the
heart. The arteries being elastic, ex
pand for an instant with ihe increas
ed amount of blood forced into them
oy each heart beat, and for the
same reason contract the moment af
ter, prodncing'thus a series of wave
like movement from the beatt out
ward towards all pari s of. the bod y.
The eslariet tpeut of the artery by
the passing waves of blooil lifts it
somewturt from i’s bed, so that it be
comes perceptible to the touch.
Within the limits of health there
may be considerable variation in the
frequency of pulse, the number of
puiee per minute differing with ago,
sex, stature, muscular action, men
tal action, the state of the digestive
process and the time of day. The
average frequency per minute is ap
proximately indicated by the fol
lowing table, given by Carpenter:
Pulse In the newly-born infant 130 to 140
Pulse during first year., 115 to 130
PdlM during second year JOO to 115
PelSe during third year 95 to 105
Pul*e during Tth to 14th year H) t i 00
Pulse during U to 91st year 75 to H 5
Pulse during 21*t to 6oth year 75 to 80
In in flam matory or acute diseases
the pulse may rise rJO or even IGO in
the adult, and “become so frequent in
the child that it cannot be counted.
Muscular exertion, mental excite
ment, digestion, alcoholic drink and
elevation above the sea level acceler
ate the pulge, and as a general rule it
is more frequent in the morning than
in the evening. It is slower In sleep,
and from the effect of rest, diet,
cold or blood-letting. The pulse ot
a grown woman exceeds that of a
man of the same age as much as 10
’or llbeiilsa ruinute, and according
to some authorities is lees frequent
in the tall than the short person, the
variation being about four beats for
each six inches ot height. The effect
of posture is considerable
Average beat
per minute lu Standing. Sitting. Lying.
Healthy men.. 91 71 86
Healthy wonaew 81 p v w _
This large difference between the
number of pulsations when lying
and sitting or standing, especially
when increased by the muscular ef
fort expended In making a sudden
change of posture, accounts for the
death of persons who have disease of
the heart on quickly assuming an
erect position. The average numeri
cal proportion of the pulse to respi
ration is four or live to one.
Hot weather, improper food, alco
holic drinks, and impure water are
the causes of every case of Diarrhea.
Cholera Morbus, Dysentery, or
Cramps, and when neglected, these
disorders become chronic and dan
gerous. Man Is at beat a careless
creature, who Inherits a dislike for
medicine, and ofieu brings on a se
vere attack ot sickness by neglecting
to treat a disease properly in its in
fancy. Perky Davis’ Pain Killer is
a sife, sure, and speedy cure for all
disorders of the stomach, and will
correct all cases of Diarrhea,Cramps,
or Dysentery immediately. All drug
gists sell it.
PURE OLD COGNAC.
The Prescription of a State Microscop,
ist For Making it.
Philadelphia Pre**.]
“Give me a little old brandy, Doc
tor.” replied the reporter.
“Very well, sir,”replied Dr. Leff
man, who is the State Microscopist
of Pennsylvania. “You shall have a
bottle to put in your pocket. As you
see. I take about half a pint of recti
fled spirit and mix with it a few
drops of coloring solution and con
centrated essence ot brandy—that is,
the brandy flavor prepared by the
druggist, and by brisk agitation the
mixture acquires the appearenoe of
cognac. You like a little bead?
Very well; I add a little of this vial,
a preparation of nitro-benzoin or ar
tificial oil of bitter almonds. Now,
as I pour it out, the bubbles remain
for some time at the top. However,
it does not taste ripe or full-blooded
yet, so I add a few drops of a prepa
ration principally composed of glyce
rine and called by the trade ‘age
and body.’ Another good shake, and
all I need is a label certifying that
tfce article is ‘ten-year-old Oognac
brandy,’ end there you have my
brandy ready for market. Os course,
the experiment has been a very has
ty one. I simply intend to show you
the principle. In practice about
naif a pound ot each of the sub
stances! have just made use of
would be added to forty gallms of
frCiified spirits, and a very respeta
ble and by no means injurious bran
dy is tfie result. In brief, the adul
teration of spirituous liquors, that
ie, the artificial production in a few
hours by Chemical process of a sim
ilar result to that attained by nature
in the course of months, or even
years—has every claim to lie regard
ed as a triumph of sience.”
Another method of euriing disease with
out the taking of nauseous medicines is
Prof. Guilmette's Kidney Pad, which is
guaranteed to cure all diseases of the
kidneys, bladder and urinary organs.
If you are troubled with fever and ague,
dumb ague, billlous fever, jaundice, dys
pepsia, or any disease of the liver, blood
and stomach, and wish to get well, try
