Kathiuka ile P., born on the 7ih of

In the bosom of a lovitiK family she
spant the first twelve years of her
life, which promised to end as happy
as it had begun. In October, 1871,
little Kathinka was sent to a board

her education at Lyons, iu Pranoe,
and at the University of Zurich. Iu
the summer of 1878 the youn* Count

July, pioyiltd with \e:y slight

The jou in y was foitunate until
they took the railroad between Chi

the Illinois Central railroad, lijrfOu
lucky man yas struck witb apqiilexv
and died at once. Deprived of all
means of help, the miser able wife,
with her child six mouths old, ar
rived in Dubuque, where, with the
aid of charitable persons, she was
abia to give her beloved husband a
proper burial.
From Dubuque she desired to go to
St, Louis, but her money only sufficed
to take her as far us Davenport, and
from theie she was helped on to
Muscation. Here our acquaintance
with the unlucky iHdy began. On
July 2C, Madam de F., au elegeuily
dressed ladv of gieat beautv, came
into our office and explained to us
her situation. Tetrs flowed abun

printed upon every feature of her
countenance. Without reserve she
related to us the history of her life.
We succeeded in getting her a ticket
to Burlington. Before berdeparture
she banded us several family papers,
a gold ring set with diamonds, her
wedding ring, and a letter to her
parents. She al-.o made the request
that, after tlie receipt of more partic

be seut to the address she had given
us. It was on Fridav last that we ret

Near Keokuk, Aug. 9, 1881

Oil receipt of these lines we sought
for information whether the unfor

the sash Uee lor suicide and child
murder, and we received from II di

latt the corpse of a woman whose
dress and appearance answered our
description had bten brought ashore.
Os the body of the child nothiug has
yet been discovered. The various
articles confided to us were sent on
the same dav to 1-iussU by Morris’s
Europeon Express, accompanied by
a letter and certificate of death.
Educated in splendor and riches,
this daughter of one of the moat, aris
tocratic families of Europe ended her
life in the waters of the Mississippi.
THE PORTERHOUSE STEAK.
Uurlßgton Hawkeye.
At the restaurant: “This is the

said the waiter, with the weary air of
a man who was tired of having to tell
the same lie a thousand times a day,

He was butchered, sir.” “Butchered
