DAILY TIMES: COLUMBUS, GEORGIA. THURSDAY MORNING. APRIL 20,11882.
AROUND IN GEORGIA.
Henry Grady has been picking
strawberrit s in Thomasville.
The Georgia State Baptist Conven
tion meets in Americus on the 20th.
Sandersville Mercury: The cold
nights and mornings from which we
have suffered for a week past have
Injured the grain crop some, but
have not damaged the fruit. Black
berries look promising, though they
are now green.
Athens Hanner: An old colored
minister Sunday sent up the follow
ing petition to the throne of grace:
"Sum ob dis here congregation will
go to the court house , some to jail,
some to de gallows and some to de
debill: but Lord bless ’em where eber
day are.’’
A Cartersville correspondent to
the Constitution says Saturday
night a cutting affray occurred be
tween Bill Clark, Bob Cotton and
John Motes, ail colored, in a cabin
near the cotton factory. Motes was
badly our, once In the shoulder and
once in the back, penetrating the
lunge. The wounds, though very
dangerous are not necessarily mor
ta 1 . Clark and Cotton, who did the
cutting, made their escape and have
not been arrested. Two Kuiv< s stain
ed with blood, a deck of cards and a
bottle of whisky were found on the
field of battle.
Constitution: Five new cases of
smallpox developed yesterday. The
cases were developed aimoat simul
taniouly in drfferent parts of the city
and can be easily traced to the case
of a negro girl who was taken about
three weeks ago and died in the city
pest-house. The patients are all ne
groes and have been sent to
the pesthouse, and all who
have been exposed have
been put under quarantine. These
make six cases so far, and as the city
is well vaccinated, it is hoped that
the progress of the disease will there
by be greatly checked.
Americus Reconler: On a recent
trip to Lee county we saw some
novel fishing done, it was in a lake
or pond which abounds in email fish
and which was constantly visited by
flocks of cranes for the purpose of
reeding on its finny treasures. A
nondescript little darky was engi
neering the scheme, and in an easy
way accomplished a feat otherwise
difficult for a practical Nimrod to do.
He did the work in this was: putting
a live roach on a hook near the shal
low water, he would retire to a safe
distance and await results ; the birds
would return and very goon one
wnuld make for the fish and swallow
it; after which it was easily taken.
Wrightsville Recorder: On Wed
nesday last, the offices of the ordina
ry, clerk of the Superior Court, and
sheriff cf this county, was broken
open by some unknown low down
sneak. In the ordinary’s office they
found the treasurer’s book, one of
the most Important records in the
county, which was considerably mu
tilated, app .rently with an intention
to destroy his vouchers and receipts.
In the clerk’s <. fflee no damage was
done exc“pt the cutting open of one
of the acts of 1875, In the sheriff’s
office thi re were several warrants
torn up. The intention of the party
or parties, is at present, a mere mat
ter of conjecture, but it is sincerely
to be hoped that the matter may be
brought to light and the offenders
meet with their just deserts. And
that the good name hitherto botne
by the people of Johnson county be
fully vindicated.
Augusta Chronicle: The Ions? sus
pense over the appointment of a post
master for Augus’a was broken yes
terday, when the President sent to
the Senate the name of Mr. W. F.
Holden. This appointment, we be
lieve, will give satisfaction. Mr. Hol
den was formerly a resident of Craw
fordville, where he was a farmer and
merchant, and possesses the confi
dence of all who know him. He will, ;
we are assurred, make a capital offi
cer. The present incumbent will not
retire until his successor is confirmed i
and qualified. Oapt. C. H. Prince
has been postmaster of Augusta for
the past twelve years, and has shown ■
himself to be a faithful official, as he
is a popular gentleman. He has con
ducted the business of the service in
an eminently satisfactory manner,
and our people regret to part with
him. We are glad, however, to know
his place will be worthily filled.
Macon lelegraph: Already dele
gates and distingushed colored men
are arriving in the city to attend the
caucus to be held here on the 27th.
Among those! in the city are some
who have rightful claim to being col
ored men of mark. Yesterday our
reporter saw Professor John A. New
by, of Philadelphia, who comes to
Macon to take part in the delibera
tions of the meeting and advise with
the colored men of Georgia. He
speaks five languages; has traveled
all over the continent of Europe, and
was engaged at the Paris Exposition
in 1867, and was afterward continen
tal courier. He was private messen
ger of the late Chief Justice Chase in
1871. He is also the author of a book
entitled “French Characteristics.”
John H. Ballou, of Rhode Island, is
another distinguished colored man in
the city. He was the first colored
man admitted to the bar of the Su
preme Court of Rhode Island, and
was aisi the first colored man admit
ted to practice in Providence. He
edited and published the first color
ed man’s paper ever published in
New England, which was known
as the "Eastern Review.” A good
hall has been engaged for the oc
casion, which will be profusely deco
rated with national flags. The fol
lowing is the programme of exercises:
J. F. Long will call the caucus
together at 10 o’clock and ex
plain the object of the meeting. They
will then go into secret session and
remain until 3 o’clock, after which
the doors will be opened to the pub
lic and the following order of exer
cises observed: Address, subject,
“Morality,” M. M. Turner; “Tem
perance,” Rev. J. W. Grant; "The
Advancement of the Negro Race,”
Rev. M. W. Thomas: "Christianity,”
Rev. R. Kent; “Union,” Rev. R. B.
Wright; The Political Situation,”
Governor Pinchback; "Origin of the
Negro Race,” A. B. Fortune; History
of the Bible,” R. J. Hart; “Agricul
ture,” 0. E. Coleman; “The Liberal
Movement,” Willie Hightower. The
object of the caucus, so far as we
have been enabled to learn, is to con
sider the Independent movement in
all in all its bearings, the educational
privileges of the colored people, and
various other matters of interest to
the race. It is fair to presume that
with the presence of the Northern
men, Pinchback and others, the cau
cus has a decided political complex
ion, and education, otc., will be made
secondary matters of consideration.
