THURSDAY FEBRUARY 15, IS-'
ABOUND IN GEORGIA.
Atlanta Constitution: Senator
Colquitt has gone to tbe Northwest
under a contract with a lecture lyce
um to deliver a series of talks. His
subject is “Georgia and the South.”
We may be sure it will receive intel
ligent and sympathetic treatment at
his hands;
Milledgeville Recorder: Colum
bus Wilcox, in the 81st year of his
age, died at the residence of his eon,
Capt. J. W. Wilcox, Midway, * Feb,
6th, The date and place of his*birth
are Ballsten, Saratoga county, New
York, may 17, 1802. He removed to
New Orleans, La., about 1830, and to
Georgia in 18G8.
Monroe Advertiser: Frank Wright,
a colored citizen of this county, for
merly the slave of Bev. Arminius
Wright, ran three plows last year,
one of which he managed himself.
He made thirty-hlne bales averaging
475 pounds each ; 800 bushels of pota
toes, and some peas—not many. He
killed ten hogs which averaged 18'J
pounds each. He did not use much
guano. He has seven bales of cotton
which he is holding, as he does not
need the hioney. He ownos a farm
of about 400 acres and runs a steam
gin.
The Augusta Chronicle received
the following letter from Tennessee:
Hazle Ridge, Deckson Co., Tenn

Hazle Ridge, Dickson Co., Tennsce.
We And the following in the Pike
county News. The girls of Monroe
are hard to boat, and the boys of
Monroe—and other counties are not
slow in finding it out. The News says;
“We learn that a young lady of Mon
roe county, and who, by the way, is
well known in our city, recently
showed what she could do when
placed in a position calling her to
work. A bridge was in course of
construction across a stream of con
siderable size near her father’s bouse,
and be being absent from home, the
care of the premises fell to her lot.
The stream was rising rapidly, tbe
rain still falling, when word was
brought that the materials for build
ing J the bridge was in danger.
Gathering her wraps, she called the
hands, bade them follow her and
had the material carried to a safe
distance from the water. But few
young ladles would have ventured
out of the house—and fewer still
would have gone so far—half a mile
or more upon such a mission.”

The police of New York took Wal
cott, the great quail eater, in the
tombs tbe other night for being tight
in a dangerous neighborhood. The
policemen said he was likely to fare
roughly where h» was,and so tonjbed
him for his own safety.
The awarding of Arlington to
General Lee’s heirs, and its sale to
the government for a century for
$150,000 will go some way towards re
pairing tbe damages done this mag
nificent property, by converting it
into a burying, and in doing so over
riding private rights.
The lower house of the Illinois leg
islature, a few days ago, passed a
resolution asking congress to pen
sion the survivors of the Mexican
and Black Hawk wars—"except Jeff
Davis.” Logan, perhaps, would
have excepted Fitz John Porter also,
if he had had a say in the matter.
Edwin Booth has been presented
is Berlin with a silver laurel crown.
He has made more reputation abroad
than he had at home—all of which
will go to increase his fame among
his countrymen on this side. We
feel proud of Booth as an American,
but fear that he has grown too big
for our boards. Shall we see him
here again?
Kate Baker, Savannah, Ga., says:

A Ma. Young, of Cincinnati, has
bought his dog a $1,500 collar, and '
bis wife now asks for a divorce upon
the queer ground that he thinks
more of his dog than be does of her. i
There does seem to be some point to
her “point,” but then wnat would
Mrs. Young have thoughtjif her hus
band had bought a $1,500 dog collar
for her?

Mr. Blount has, as we are told, by
bis great energy and popularity in
»o egress, secured the recommenda
tion by the committee on appropria
tions, $75,000 for the establishment
of permanent U. 8. birracks in
Atlanta. Now, what in the world do
the people of Georgia want wi h a
V. 8. barrack in Atlanta? Is there
any need for such a school of idleness
anti vice in that town? That is bad
work for Mr, Blount.
DAILY TIMES: COLUMBUS. GEORGIA, THURSDAY MORNING, FEBRUARY 15, 1883
(JUVERNWR MTBPHBN*’ ABIIKKX*.
We publish this morning, from the
Savannah News, the address deliver
ed in that city by Governor Stephens
’ at the B?squi-Centenui il celebration,
; a day or so ago. It is long for our
space, but knowing that our readers
. will want to see what their governor
’ had to say on so interesting an oc
casion, we make room for it in full.

THE CITIZENS’ BINK CA*K
We print elsewhere this morning
’ the decision of Mr. W. D. Ellison the
Citizens’ bank case. This case in
volved mainly the liability of stock
holders for unpaid subscription and
was submitted to Mr. Ellis, who was
appointed master in chancery by
Ju igh Hillyer, of the superior court.
It will be seen that Mr. Ellis de
cides squarely that the stockholders
are liable for every dollar of their
subscription stock, only fifty per cent
of which has been paid in. The
original capital stock of the bank
was $400,000, of which $200,000 was
paid in, Os the remaining $200,000,
decided by Mr. Ellis to be still due,
about SIOO,OOO has been balanced by
the purchase of claims against the
bank held by depositors and others.
The selection of Mr. Ellis as tbe
master in this case was a wise one.
He is a clear headed, studious and
well-equipped lawyer, deliberate and
conscientious by nature, and enjoys
the fullest confidence of the bench,
bar and public, His decision shows
deep research, and will strike anv
lawyer as being sound in law, well
supported by authority, and in its
style, clear, judicial and forcible. As
to its importance locally, it involves
large interests for a large number of
people. Outside of Atlanta, it will be
esteemed as a clear and useful deliv -
erance on a question of special and
general interest. -Constitution..

The flood in the Ohio river is more
disattreus this year than was ever
known before. Many towns on the
river (ire almost totally inundated,
and some of them cut entirely off
from communication with the main
land, except by boats. At Cinciunatl
the depot of the Southern railroad
was undermined by the water and
fell, carrying upwards of a hundred
persons. Cincinnati is a heavy suf
ferer and her people, as the suffsrers
at other points within the reach of
this immense sweep of water, will
have the sympathy of tbe country.
a
A rich “bonanzi,” offering a big
"divide,” has just been opened in
New York. They have in thatcity a
board they call the commissioners of
juries. This board makts lists, and
issues summons to such persons as
have been drawn. Os course the
mimes of hundreds of rich bankers,
brokers, and merchants, arc on these
jury rolls who would rather pay
from $25 to SSOO than to be call d
from their business to do jury dut y.
Knowing these facts tbe clerks in
tbe commissioners’ office formed a
ring, including a shrewd outsi it r
named McGrath, and issued bogus
summons to wealthy men and gave
McGrath the list that he might see
them aud "arrange" to have their
names omitted at the call in court.
McGrath worked thescheme well, on
a basis of one-half of what he got,
and it is ascertained now that the
ring "squeezed” from their victims
from $75,000 to SIOO,OOO per year.
Verily, Gotham is a place of great
“moral ideas,” but unfortunately
the ideas do not sort well with their
practices in all cases.
