STATE.
Mr. W. R. Works, of Selma, has a
relic in the shape of a iialf eheetof the
evening ell Jo a of the Selma Morn
log Dispatch, bearing date Deo. 18,
1864. It contains inti resting Confed
erate war history.
Dallas county recently lost an old
and respectable Ici’izen in the person
of Mr. Archie MeKellar. He died at
his home near Brown’s Station. The
deceased was one of the first sett lers
of the county, and had reached the
age of eighty years.
Rev. H. K Rees, of Mobile, recent
yl heard the cry of an infant before
his door and on going there found a
baby, about a month old, tucked in a
basket, to which was attached a note
requesting that the child be sent to
the Church Home, and money would
be sent for its support' The waif was
sent to the Home.
A white woman, who refuses to
give her name, was arrested on the
streets of Montgomery, and is con
fined in the city guard house. She
had considerable money in her pos
session, and although assused of
drunkenness, exhibits evidences of
refinement. Whence she came, and
what is her mission, is a mystery.
Birmingham Age: Dr. G. M. Mor
row and Messrs. H. L. Wheeler,R. H.
Hagood, O. H. Beed and F. P.
O’Brien, sureties for Miss Alice
deceased, postmistress of
Birmingham, held a meeting yester
day afternoon, and, according to the
power invested in them by law, ap-,
pointed T. U. Green postmaster to
fill the unexpired term of his late
daughter.
Greenville Advocate: It la an old
saying that “a gun is dangerous with
out lock, stock or barrel.” Whether
i his be so or not, it has been practic
ally demonstrated that a hammer can
be dispensed with: As Messrs. Geo.
Kilpatrick and J. T. Thomasson were
ou their way to this city several days
since to have a gun repaired which
was minus a lock, a fine turkey gob
bler crossed the road io front of them.
It would never do to let this saucy
gobbler banter them, they thought;
so they loaded the iockless rifle in
double quick time, and wnile one took
aim the other applied a torch to th
tube and sent tbe deadly missile
“spang through” his gobblerebip.
They brought him to town and sold
him for $1 50.
At half past three o’clock yesterday
afternoon Miss Alice Green, Birm
ingham’s young postmistress, breath
ed her last. Several months ago the
dread destroyer, consumption, began
its fatal work, and Mies Green left
for Florida in tbe hope that tbe warm
southern winds would fan from her
checks the hectic flush ; but, gradu
ally growing wdrse, she returned
home on Friday, the 15th inst., to die
with tbe faces of loved ones around
her—to leave off forever tbe work of
a life well spent, where she was loved
by relatives and friends and honored
and esteemed by all who knew her.
She was appointed postmistress of
Birmingham to fill tne position form
erly held by her father, and she
labored so faithtully to perform the
duties of that office, and so well suc
ceeded in h r eame-t efforts, that, her
deal h is deeply deplored by r be entire
community.—Btrmiugh im Age.
