A wonderful feat of bird eating has
been accomplished by the Hon. L. J.
Hand, of Chilton county, who has
eaten 48 quails in 48 consecutive days
and would have eaten more had the
birds not become frightened and
taken tbeir departure for some secret
safer quarter.
The vital and mortuary statistics of
Lowndes, as taken trom the Hayne
ville Examiner, for last year wete:
Births, 144 whites and 932 blacks;
deaths. 94 whiles and 361 blacks. Toe
cost of caring for the county paupers
was two thousand, five hundred and
six dollars.

Mrs. Jones, a deserving old lady

Wideman made an agreement with

Rousseau, of Monlgomeiy, treasurer.
Montgomery was cnosen as the place
for the next annual meeting.
Greenville Advocate. - I ast Friday,
toe 4' h instant, Mr. John C itlendon,
of O.iky Streak, was in the act of re
pairing a water gap in his fencing,
which had been washed out during
the recent hard rains and while reach
ing through the fence to get a tail,
a large water moccasin seized his
hand. Mr. Critteudon withdrew bis
hand with the snake still hanging on.
It, was with considerable difficulty
that he succeeded in shaking off the
venomous bold, and not without
being badly bitten. Mr. Robert Ctit
lendon, his son. was present render
ing assistance and succeeded at last
in killing the snake. He is still suffer
ing greatly, but nis friends here will
be relieved to learn that no serious
results are apprehended.
