The letter writers and the newspa
pers are now busy ventilating the
Sherman,Davis and Stephens letters,
it is admitted on ail sides that noth
ing can be found in President Davis’
letters to justify the charges made
agaiust him by General Hbermau,
that ho was eobemi g for the dicta
torship of thob.utb, etc., but the
clearing of Mr. Davis nas brought
out letters written by Mr. Btephene,
while he was Vice President ot tin
Southern Confederacy, to Gov. H, V.
Johnson, and possibly others
that. uauuoC add to the love
that. Georgians so long cherished for
the so-called great commoner. We
ate sorry that Mr. Stephens ever
wrote the letters lie did in
regard to Mr. Davis, and
having written them we are eoirv
that they have ever reached the pub
lic eye. Only his poor lionllh and
Intense bodily suffering ran be of
fered as an apology tor the spirit and
general tone of his letter to Governor
Johnson.
IUE NKW HOl'ltl.
We have xeueived a New York pub
licatiou called the “New S util.” It
is printed In German and deciart a tie
object to be to induce emigra
tion to this country. W,
make this notice only to soy what we
have said before, that wo have uo
sympathy whatever with the
purpose of the publication. Lt
foreigners will come in-re upon
an independent basis, paying
their own way aud selecting then
own homes aud following their call
ing, like our own people, w re
prepared to welcome them; but we
atojoppoecd to offer.ng them any
manner of bounty or other induce
ment i.bun such as is offered our owl
people to move from one State to
another, to get them here. This
country is now full of people who are
struggling hard for a mere
living, and their condition will not
be improved by bringing to their
shores from abroad hundreds ol
ship loads of foreigners in like, ci
worse condition. We have never
taken kindly to the term 1 JV«w
South” nor to the ideas intended to
be conveyed by it, and our aversion
to It will be intensified it it is to be
vitalized to a greater activity, by the
importation of emigrants from
abroad.
General, Sherman, instead of pro
ducing a letter from Jefferson Davis,
produces one written by the late A.
H. Stephens, in which that gentleman
gave vent, to nis gloomy views
about the President of the Con
federacy. From General Sherman’s
statement It appears that the pub
lished letter was a private one written
to Herschel V. Johnson ; that on tht
march through Georgia one ot Sher
man’s bummers ransacked John
son's house and stole it, aud that
the thief sent hie prey to General
Bbermau. It is wen known that Mi.
Stephens was quite antagonistic to
Mr. Davis at limes dining th. war.
Hie attitude towards the Oonfederatt
President at the time he wrote it -
letter war one of hostility. Genet- '
Sherman distinctly charged that Mr.
Davis had written a letter, wink
President of the Confederate Stat
outlining hie desire to become a die
tutor, and threatening to coerce at.y
State that should attempt to sectut
from the Confederacy. Mr. Davis
declares this to he false. General
Sherman bus produced nothing at
yet to substantiate his charge.—Mo

head of fattening hogs, and others have lost
smaller numbers, but the aggregate U very
large. The disease is not thought to be the
genuine hog cholera, although many of the
symptoms tire the same.
Thin latter di* taw- is generally accredited
to bad fool, filthy jjens or lying in utraw
stacks, in one cn-ic in Fort Rumell the Bur
roughs brothers hail a lot of fattening bogs
which they feared might tie attacked with the
disease, anti accordingly placed them
in an orchard of three acres, with
a good star'd of graan. These were
the first attacked. The prevailing
symptoms are not always tbu same, but gen
erally they are first taken with the scours
and become feverish, after which they refuse
to eat and then lie down. They usually live
from four to eight days. Others are noticed
U) l>e stupid and constipated. Fattening hogs ;
are more generally attacked than others.
The dieease is not necessarily fatal. In many
cases small doses of turpentine in the food am
found to effect a cure, while in others it en
tirely fails. Many farmers simply let the
animals alone, ami some of them get well.
No one seems to know what the d’sease is or

Lexington, Mo., Dec. 23,—Hog cholera
has broken out afresh in this county, and is
particularly disastrous in the neighborhood
of (Ireenton. Nearly every farmer in that
vicinity has suffered from its ravages. Dr.

from it. Reports from Camden Bend, in the
Bay County bottoms, just opposite Welling
ton, this county, are to the effect that the di**-
ease is raging to an alarming extent.

New York, Dec. 24,—The formality of

jury in tMT* suit brought I>y Mme. Holla Hcal

E. Abbey, was gone through with to-day
in the Rupertor Court, before Judge
Ingraham. The prima donna contralto
sued Mr. Abbey to receive the bal
ance of her salary, which Mr. Abbey had re
tained because she had refused to sing oa
April 12 last at the Metropolitan Oj»era
House. Bhe insisted that the notice to sing
was too short ami that it was an impossibllty,
and her voice might be ruined if she at
tempted “'The Prophet,” that afternoon. Rhe
expressed her willingness to sing in “Martha"
or “Rigoletto,” but Mr. Abbey said, “The
Prophet,” or nothing.
It was nothing, aud he closed the house.
He Insisted that the reason she had not sung
was txN'auiie she had eaten too hearty a break
fast. The case wns given to the jury last
Friday afternoon.
They did not agree till after 10 o’clock that
night. The sealed verdict was opened to-day.
The jury had found a verdict in favor of
Mme. Hcalchi for $1,441. Mr. Rivers, one of
Mr. Abliey’s counsel, made a motion for a
new trial, which was denied by Judge Ingra
ham, He then asked for a stay of the case
for sixty days, and also a stay of proceedings
in order that he might have an opportunity
to consult with Mr. Abbey, who is now in
Europe, as to what further stej* should lie
taken, utnd it was granted. Counsel for
