A critic says: Washington Irving never
gave to the world of letters a more beau
tiful thing than "hip Van Winkle." Irving
baa long since passed into the land ot
spirits, but the story lived and deceived to
be dramatized. Tbe story is never in
spired. It begins in the Hude in Valley,
famous in poetry and history. The Cats
kill mountains are tbe backgrounds, and
Bip Van Wiukie is handed down to us lu
material lineage as the hero. He was bt -
loved ot tbe village wives aud children.but
a jealous wife could not see his virtues,
aud like many a man before and since,
tailing to receive kind words at home,
drowned bls troubles in the Bowing bowl.
Among the many untrue, Schneider, his
dog, was true: he didn't scold—an odd
bone and tbe companionship ot bls master
was all be asked. It was natural that
when BlpVau Wiukie wandered ofl into
the mountains that Scbenelder should toi
low him. Whether they tound odd fairies
at nlue pine, or whether It was Holland
Gin, does not detract from the story. Bio
drank the mixt ite as Indeed he was ad
dicted to drinking anything above the
suspicion of water. He slept, the etarj
cays, tor twenty years. In that sleep, he
had outlived bls dog, bls gun had grown
old and rusty, and he had also outltv d
tbe woman who bad driven him out into
tbe storm. Where he has appeared, he
has so ably represented the story that
Jefferson has Buffered by comparison.
