HTl< K TO BEK< Ht It,
Editob Times; The rending of an
article in your paper from the New
York Commercial Auvi ttib- r entitled
“Stick to Beechei” reminde mu < f a
little tncidi nt which occurred in 188 u.
I was in that ci y then and wae e’op
ping at my favorite hotel on U ion
Square and after taking my tore k
faat on one Sabbath morning, about
9 o’clock, concluded to atep down to
Grace Church to see if I could secure
eeats for myself and wife for the
service at 11 o'clock. At the time!
called the church was vacant. A« 1
entered the vestibule I saw a large
fat man, whose name I do net re
member now, who was chi, f sexton of
the church. He Was talking to a
gentleman whom I atterwards learn
ed was named Bencher, but no kin to
Henry Word Beech, r.as he was care
ful to explain to mo. He was very
polite and asked where 1 lived and
made some inquiries about my war
record. Before parting ho made the
following remarks which Impressed
me deeply at the time. Balti he “had
Horace Greely and Henry Ward
Beecher been hung up on the highest
tree In the country there would have
been no Wiir." And yet the appeal
comes “Klick to Beecher.” N

BEWAUE OF HC()IM)RK|jg
The following is a copy of a circu
lar letter received a day or so ago by
one of our most respectable business
mon from some scoundrel in Now
York, who only wishes to find dupes
as unprincipled us himself, to “show
off” his spurious bills us money. Wo
reproduce the circular, for it is only
one of thousands scattered ail over
the country—to let such persons as
might possibly be tempted to corres
pond with the wretch, know the
criminal work that they aro expected
to do, and caution them against all
such efforts to corrupt them. To
pass one of the bills spoken of in
this circular—knowing it to be a
spurious Issue, is a crime as great as
counterfeiting, and will make the
one who does it liable to a service in
a Northern penitentiary of twenty
years. The Government detectives
will be promptly informed of the ! ■
suing of these circulars.
Here is the circular. The name
at the bottom and address being
written in a disgulsediband:
New Yobk.
Dearßlr: No doubt when you re
ceive this letter, you will say it is
some trap iiet for you to get vou
into trouble; but such is cot tne case.
I promise you this, as true as there is
a God in Hi-uveu. I obtained yi.u,
name through a friend of mine who
passed through your place, and this
Is all 1 Kn<w if you; and, on tin
Solemn Oith, I spunk tin p ain, cm

tins letter, I will give you my w.ud
and honor, that no person, man,
woman or child, shad ever see or
hear from my mouth the least tiling
that <vpr passe? betwi en us, and l
will keep this promise ns sacred as 1
would my oath beforeG din heave .
1 wiU be plain with you. I am deal
Ing Hi at tick s, paper goods—ls,
2 1, ss, 10s and 20s—(do you
understand) I connot be plainer
Until I know your heart is true to
inv;thenl will send you fun anti
plain particulars that, I mean you
right, and will satisfy and convince
you llmp 1 cad furnisti you with a
Pine, Bale, and Profitable Article,
that can be used in any manner ano
for til purposes, and No Danger.
Now understand me,fair and square:
I ask no money in advance, nor do 1
want it. I want (to give you plain
and positive proofs that, should you
need my assistance, I can and will
help you out of any money or busi
ness Howblrw you may be in, and no
ma't< r to what extent; and no person
on ths face 6t God’s earth heed ever
be the whu-r for it, unless you betray
me; as my intention*are square and
upright to you, and as 1 nuVt r have
or will harm you by word, io it or
action, I*isk you, befote heaven, as a
mail of honor and principle, not to
expose or betray tne. And if I have
madeta tpistak - in sending vou this
letter, I ask you to forgive me, and
let the matter rest where it is, for my
intentions are as upright to you as
heaven itself, For a man cun have
honor and principle no matter what
hie business mav be in this world.
Bo do not barm me. For my motto
in this lit.- is, and always has been,
if you can’t do a fellow belt g . ome
good, do him no harm, no matter
wiiathie calling way be.
Now a word of advice in regard to
thia business. There are aurne un
principled men in thia Oitv nd vert is
Ing goods same as mine. But before
God and man they are far from it.
They will eend you circulara and
promise all kinds of things, and
Should you be foolish enough to eend
them money, that la the last you will
hear of them or your money. And
there are other tiicug here dealing in
green goods of a very poor quality,
ht'd not safe to handle. N>w I am
not writing this letter through malice
or selfishness to get your tiade, but
to warn you against them. Should
you at any time receive their citcuiar
