PARNELL'S BTC VL'TOrY
HIS TIPPERARY OPPONENTS SURREN
DER WITHOUT A BLOW.
Flection of O’Connor Without Opposition—
-I‘ariu‘H’s Stronger ih «o Eter
Lord Wolseley’s Conti<len- •- Dub
lin Alderman Enjoined.
Dublin’, Jan 10.—Mr. John O’Connor v-as
to-day elected ntembor of parliament from
County Tipperary without opposition.
All the tory and half of the liberal j urnals
of Great Britain have been in a state of huxh
glee since Saturday because of the r beli ’f
that Mr. Parnell’s strength in Ireland had
been broken, or at least that a dangerous mu
tiny had begun which was bound ultimately
to disrupt tke Irish nationalist party.
Now all the fair structure of hope
they have been so fondly building is flat
on the ground. The mere presence of
the calm, cold dictator sufficed to turn Tip
perary into an effusively loyal and submis
sive country. The champion of local claims,
Mr. O'Ryan, went down before a blow had
been struck. The unanimity with which ev
erybody disclaimed the bare idea of offending
Mr. Parnell and Archbishop Croke extended
even to Mr. O’Ryan himself, who withdrew
precipitately from the contest after a confer
ence with the archbishop.
It seems that O’Ryan is an extremely young
man, an attractive speaker, but rattlebrained.
He and his hanim scaruin friends went into
the fight without realizing what their action
ment They thought it a very tine thing to
send the camlidate from Cork back to his
home with a flea in his ear, but they were
ludicrously unable to withstand the pressure
as the central organization and struck their
colors at the start. Mr. O’Ryan mn io his in
evitable surrender more humiliating by pub- I
lishing a rhetorical letter, declaring that he
represented a principle and would stand up.
for it to the bitter end. which serves to illus- i
rtrate the boyish nature of the whole affair. ;
If it had not beau that the tory and orange i
press made so much of the thing, and gloried
jo obtrusively over what they called the
tin uking down of Mr. Parnell, the matter
wculd scarcely have called for notice. Ah
t is, the episode has afforded a splendid ;
opportunity for Mr. Parnell to show his*
power without exerchig it, and at !
;ho very ojwiug of the campaign to ‘
iemonstrate the necessity of placing nation- ;
il interests above parochial preferences.
Under the new single district sys'em the
:endency to the latter will bo s'<ll.:, and
lenee Tipperary's example of deiorence will
>e highly beneficial in this sens--.

Against Public Policy.
New York, Jan. 10. For years the Lake
luperior copper mining xompanies have
oined in agreements to regulate prices and
>revent unpr- nluble competition. The corn
mnies interested were the t 'alumd and
lecia, Quincy, Atlantic, Central, Allouez,
•’ranklin, Huron and others Under these
ont.ra< ts the Calumet and Hecla company
vas to market the entire producti- n of the
Superior region and divide th- amount
received according to the quantity of copper
jroduced by each company. The Calumet
m i Hecla made contracts for many thousand
>f tons of copper in Europe. Despite these

wrought by the Calumet and HeHa and other
jompanies and a temporary injunction ch

Castor Oil Wells in York State.
Horn'ELLSVILLE, N. Y., Jan. 10.—All the
?vells and springs in the vicinity or Port
Byron became dry a few weeks ago. Drills 1
were employed and water was found twenty j
‘eet below the well bottoms, but j
jp with it an oil so pungent and off- naive _
that the w ater can not be used. It acts as a .
powerful purgative. The oil is not petroleum. 1
Lt resembles castor oil in appearance. No I
jne has yet been able to tell what it is. Salt
water has also been found, the brine being so ;
strong that it yields 75 per cent, pure salt.
Ashore in Shoal Water Bay.
Portland, Ore., Jan 10. —A report reaches
the signal station at Cape Hancock that a
steamship is ashore Dear the entrance of Shoal
Water bay, twenty miles north of the mouth
of the Columbia. The weather was very
foggy, and it is not likely that tugs can
reach the stranded vessel from Astoria. The
steamer may be the San acolier which
left San P’rancis -o the sth ixri for Puget
sound. It is almost certain that it is not a
passenger steamer. The si ran e l vessel is
twenty miles from the nearest telegraph
station.
