A NEW BLESSING.
THE NUMEROUS ADVANTAGES OP
LUMINOUS WALL-PAPER.
▲ID tom Papered with It Cun Never Bo
come Dark —Handy for the Nursery,
the Parlor, the Hail, and
the Bed-Boom.
[Chicago Herald.!
The Ingenuity of man is constantly giv
ing to the world new blessings. Some of
these come from unexpected and humble
sources, and are not, therefore, accorded
that ready appreciation which they de
serve. Many valuable inventions, promis
ing large and diversified benefits to the
race, have at first been received with cold
indifference by people who, upon suddenly
realizing the boon given them, are amazed
at their owu lukewarmness and lack of
perception. Such instances are of almost
daily ocijilrrcnce.
Most newspaper readers have heard
spmething of the luminous wall-paper
which a German mechanic declares can
b(S easily and cheaply manufactured, yel
it would be safe to say that few have
given serious thought to its real value,
it is not pretended that this paper has
suliicient of the luminous quality to make
lamps or gaslight unnecessary, but ex per
merits have shown that in the absence of
artificial light a room papered with this
substance can never become dark.
Think of the advantages such paper
would give in carrying on the ordinary
routine of a housefioltl Timid children
put to sleep without a lamp ia
the nursery. The wife couli go' to an
unlighted room to find her thimble with
out taking the lamp away from the hus
band’s reading table, and by her delay
starting one of those periodical discussions
'6h the value of a place for .everything
and everything in its place which in some
cases have been known to result iu had
temper, staying down town, and even di
vorce. ’
House numbers and keyholes are
already provided with luminosity for the
benefit of men who are detained at the
office, but this is only tbe beginning. The
hall should besimilariy illumined, in order
that the belated one may be able to untie
his shoes without drawing the strings into
a hard knot, and that he may eitec, a
passage without knocking down the hat
■ rack. The walls of the sitting room should
be similarly treated, so that he will not
mistake the dim gray mantel for a bar and
disturb the household by his expostula
tiuus with an imaginary gentleman behind
it, whose refusal promptly to obey orders
is always regarded as an insult by tired
gentlemen who have been detained so late
at theoliice. If the hed-ro in has been
likewise endowed with light there will he
less danger of liis hanging his garmen ts on
the tloor and his boots upon an imaginary
peg situated at the top of the bed-head in
a direct vertical line above the face of his
sleeping wife.
When parlors shall have been papered
with this luminous blessing the fathers of
ambitious daughters can retire unworried
about the accumulations of the gas bill.
And as for the young ladies and their
.callers, the soft, mellow luminosity of the
parlor walls —not too bright, but bright
enough—will be to them a joy and a de
light. It will remind of the
pale moon, and yet cause them
no anxious thoughts of possible silhou
ettes upon the window curtains, to lie
seen by rude passers by. And when the
long, long dreaded hour of parting comes
and they have at length reached the hail,
final ceremonies may be carried on with
out fear on her part that he will in the
darkness miss his aim and salute her upon
the end of her nose, and without a linger
ing ami unsatisfactory suspicion in his
mind as he hastens homeward that she has
a dreadful cold in her head.
With luminous walls in her dom’cite
the wife who rißcs in the dead of night to
see it her husband’s socks need mending
and, incidentally, if he has any ioo <
change in his pantaloons pockets, need
not bring unjust suspicion upon herself
by striking a match. Tbe man of tin
house can sneak into the pantry after thai
mliice pie without danger of tipping the
castor over or spilling the milk.
He can also go down cellar after a bucket
of coal without falling over his boy’s sled
and tangling his legs up with the runners
and coal scuttle.
in short, the uses to which this device
can be put in tbe household are number
les)c (Hid the .value of the invention is in
estimable. For once the world should
not be -slow to appreciate and generall3 ■
utilize a great boon given it by a iunubh
but unselfish discoverer.

[“Curtis" in Inter OceAn.l
A visitor to Mexico will lie greatly
astonished by having a residence presented
to . him by every man he meets. It is a
way they have here. You are introduced
to an entire stranger, Senor £o- and —So.
whom you have never heard of before,
and who has never heard of you. After £
few moments conversation you part com
ppny; he shakes you warmly by the hand,
tells you that your house is at 10 Culle
de Something, and ready for you at
any time Very likely if he meets you
the next morning he will have no
recollection of your existence. This ex
cessive generosity often results in amusing
embarrassments, i eople come here, find
the hotels very bad, and are told every
five minutes by some Spaniard that bis
bouse is at their disposal. tM.metime.s an
Invitation of this sort ia accepted, and a
contral,emps ensues.
Not only their houses but whatever you
admire is yours. If you express a sen ti
ment of approbation for anything
the owner at once says: “Senor, it
is yours, ” but be simply intends to say
something flattering, and you are there
fore not expected to accept anything that
is offered you.
K«buking Foreign Interference.
[The Argonaut.)
■ “Go to, villain!” said Lucius Aurelius
Sejanus, accosting Caius Sempronius
Gracchus in a dive at the corner of the
Appiau wav and Orchard street, just as
the latter was disposiug of a large sized
saddle-rock from Tarentum; “go to I”
“One at a time,” calmly replied the Ho
man statesman, as he wiped the pepper
sauce off his mustache and winked at
Scipio Africanue behind the bar.
Thus did the noble Homan rebuke for
eign interference when Ue was taking his
: lunch.
For Preserving Ship's Itecords.
[Chicago Times.]
An ingenious contrivance for preserv
ing the records of ships lost, at sea has
been invented by a Mr. Duncan Sinclair,
a resident of New Zealand, it consists ol
an innar and outer case, tbe lower euds of
which are open and connected by a plate
iu the form of a ring. This has a cork
filling and a separable tube attached at its
lower end to a cap plate screwing into the
Idottom ring-shaped piate.
The Magnet Care.
[New* Orleans Times-Democrat].
The use of the magnet for the cure of
diseases was known to the ancients. It
was known to A*tius, who lived as early
as the year 500. 'He says: “We are a*
sured that those who are troubled with
the gout in their hands or feet or with
convulsions, fin* relief when they hold s
