Originality so much talked of Is nothing
more or less then personality and being
true to the same. Persons were given
different mind* In order to give the vari
ety that makes life snd It Is only when we
go against tbW personality of ours tbat
we tall of eucoess. Original ly Is a degree
ol difference from others, with faith and
confidence enough to assert It. The end
at lained la the only way to Judge of lie
merit. The ones who work by a model
may be good artisans, bul are never In
ventors. The world wants original tnlnk
ere and workers. Pin your faith to no
man's tenets or methods, but think wl' h
your own mind, whloh was given you for
tbat purpose. B) not easily satisfied. A
good workman Is never so. Persistently
study an Idea until Its falsity or truth Is
established. Originality Is often Inspira
tion. Inspiration Is tne lightning Bash
piercing the darkness Instantaneously,
and makss an Indelible mark. Originality
rooms the beaten path, but biases the
way by preference through grand prime
val foreete. Originality, apparently ec
centric, Is t steady and ceaseless worker.
Originality la a maker; a searcher after
new things and Is not oontent with polish
ing up old work. A model was never in
tended to be improved on; It can only
go eo high and no higher.
Originality requiring new thought, and In
a new field, Is a higher form of thought,
losomuoh as It has do model to oopy after,
and travels, as It were, through a wilder
ness, with do roads or way blaced, with no
examples to encourage, and fights against
pieconoelved opinions and old things that
have the weight ot preoedem and example
on their side. Originality, even If no better
than things of a similar nature, Is an Im
provement. solely on aoocunt of Its new
ness; refreshing snd relieving the same
ness. The most hackneyed subject handled
by au original mind, baa new lights and
shadows displayed. No subjsot Is old to
the original mind. Like the astronomei
discovering new stars In the heavens, so
oilglaallty finds new stars of thought,
Originality Is perceptive, perceiving new
leaturee—oomparltlve, oomparlag them
with old, and Instinctive In Its nature.
Born In a strange land, It comet to us a
stranger, and so Is us a stranger received
until we get acquainted with It.
Originality is often unpopular. It seems
presumption. Old, familiar beliefs and
things are the most comfortable. We dis
like the new path until It becomee trod
den. Naw things cause study; we do nol
like study, but prefer repose. Originality
sails over unknown 3eae to new realms.
Originality disturbs not worthy things,
but adds to them. It Is rustless and for
ever seeking. Everyone has originality,
but some will not give It play. Tne teault
Is, not being true to self, they accomplish
nothing. Do not .be a mere copyist, but
make a path of your o wn. Be original or
nothing; else for wbat la your personality
and brains given you?
lour true Individuality is what you are
regarded for, it at all. Any new Idea, II
good, mikes you a discoverer and In
ventor and gives progression to yjursel,
and others. Originality Is Improvement
on old things or discovery of new and
stlmaltates endeavor. It la the upsprlng-
Ing of thought to a new atmosphere
Analytical and searching, It finds a nsw
agent as does tne ohemtst, In old things
and vice versa. Originality Is revolu
tionary—either better or worse. It Is pro
ductive, bringing new yields trom sterile
fields, bringing fertility out of barrenness
Original thought Is reoelved at first
with more or lees distrust, as It should
be-until Its merit Is ascertained. It
stands on Its merit alone, not being
backed by precedent. Originality con
sists la Its newness and merit; the two
things having to be com olned to make it
wortby, a new thing without worth being
original, but, having no merit, therefore
of no worth, only so far aa It Is Indica
tive of progress and aspiration, which
may have success In future efforts. 'The
wish alone to be original is an advance;
an enoouraglng augury of the bent of
mind.
Originality has no pattern; It requires
none. It Is Dot fickle, but Is changeable,
as ohangabltlty Is Its eesenoe. Originality
Is daring and bears no restraint. It Is
critical, seeing the sameness and lack of
pattern performance, and striving to
remedy their defec a. Imagination and
oonstruetlveneas are the basis of origin
ality; tbe former planning, the latter exe
cuting. Originality la new things, new
ways, new thoughts, discoveries, notion*,
amotions, new life) It Is the result of free
thought, uDtrammeled and unbiased, an
assertion ot raan’a dignity and power;
dissatisfaction at what la, and wanting
something better—lnvention, productions
creation, and ae a oreatlou partakes of
tbe sublime to a greater or less degree,
Originality appears simple when new oft
tlmee, as does any fine production UQtll
we get fully Into Its merits by study. Tbs
thing that's comprehended at a glance has
often a bare surface, no 'lghts and shad
ows and concealed beauties. Originality
:an only be Judged truly bv comparison
and final result. It there was no origin
ality—lt all thought and aoted alike there
would be no ptogress, life would lose Its
xestand Infinite variety, and everything
would eome to a standstill. Don't call a
man a fool beoause he d m't think and act
ae you do. H» oouid return you the com
pliment with equal justice. Baeult Is the
true and only test. You may not Indorse
bis work, or It may not please you, but
that Is no evldeuoe It Is not right or
good work. Original thinkers are the
pones-rs, the discoverers, the Inventors
tae teaohers. Not ooataut wlthiold things,
they would hare all new; the advance
torch-bearers who light up the way ahead.
They possess tbe light that pleroee the
darkness and go forward. Be original or
be nothing.

Yesterday, while a number of persons
were gathered around the stove In the

one of the stable ioroe threw a consider

tne pipe being choked up with soot, pro

the pipe down and filling tne room with
smoke. One of the party was literally oov
