It has been asserted over and often
and over again, that railroads have
no souls, but it Is not so, they have
hearts and souls, and both do good
works in away that weaker mortals,
whoclaim to have all the souls, can
not imitate. The Western and At
lantic road notified the mayor of At
lanta yesterday that thirteen carloads
of wood, donated to the city poor,
awaited his orders. "Blessed is be
that rememnereth the poor, to succor
them.” How happy such a donation
to the poor of Columbus would make
Father C impbell. The wood would
m ike the poor comfortable, but its
distribution would make his heart
leap for joy.
A bkpobt prevalent in London save
that the British Ministry, at. a cabinet
council held on Munday, decided to
resist any attempt on the part of
Turkey to occupy any portion ot
Egypt, or to land troops in that
country. A year ago we commented
on the anamoliy of Great Brltian
treating El Mahdi and his followers
as "rebels,” as they could only be
rebels against Turkey, or against
Egypt, which is tributary to Turkey.
This reported decision of the British
cabinet se's aside Turkish or Egvp

Soudan, and arrogates it to Great

therefore, than ten years ago one can
live far more comfortably to-day.
It is probable that bottom prices
have been streak. Certain it rs that
the price of nearly every article oi
necessity is lower than it baa been in
thia generation. Tan Ameriban Gro
cer published from its own files, <h>

since 1870 of sugar, coffee, tea, rice,
p >rk, lai I, bU'ler, cheer' 1 Hour fnd

which go to make up the daily living
of the average family -and, in every
Instance, a steady and rapid decline
in prices was demonstrated:. Sugar,
for lustance.hae fallen from UJ cente
crushed and 13 for granulated to 6J
end 6j respectivelv, a failing off ol
considerably more than one-half in
fifteen years.
Coffee has not declined quite as
much, but m-dlum tea has fallen
from 59 to 20 eents, rice from 7j to 4;
cents, mess pork from $2(5 88' to sl3
and lard from 15J to 7 cents, a reduc
tion of nearly 50 per cent, dn each of
these articles. Butter, in the same
time, has fa'len from 35 to 20 cents,
and flour from $5 50 to $3 10. Stiff
greater is the decline In fruit and
canned goods. Tomatoes, which sold
at $2 10 per dozen cans in 1870, can
now be bought for from 75 to9o cents,
while canned peaches have declined
from $-1 to $1 65. These figures are,
of course, for wholesale orders, but
the reduction holds good of retail
eales also.
The decline in most of these art!
cles has been gradual and uniform,
he present prices being the lowest
reached in fifteen years. Pork and
dairy products were cheap r for a
short time after the panic of 1878. bm
th 'se low ra’es listed for a v rvshort
time, and did not benefit the general
public, whereas tp-dav the prices are
as much reduced on goods sold at re
tail as at wholesale.
What is true of fond. Is equally true
of clothing, In every Uno of good?,
from the lowest to the highest, there
hie beau a reduction; greatest in the
cheap goods, which the general pub
lic need meet ot and buy most of. A
careful estimate, of all the articles
that enter ln*o family expenses,
shows that sixty cents to day will
buy as much hb $1 teu years ago, and
that on the same salary, one cau live
at least 40 per cent more eomfortablv
than then. They wtho earn as much
as they earned in 1870 are much bet
ter off than they were then, because
these earning w ill buy more and go
forth'r. Tnoseeveu wnose earnings
have been reduced one-fourth are
better off, and can purchase more.
It is diffi"Ult, however, to peremde
the average man Os thh, as be Is in

WASHINGTON LETTER.

Wa HtNGTOS. Jan. 19, 1885.
During the past week the debates
and acts of Congress have touched a
variety of subjects. The French'
Spoliation bill, which was fir t
brought up eighty-t hree years ago,
has passed both houses; and the Nic
urauguan bill, which ot-ens up the
wi lest and gravest possibilities, has
been debated. J.>ff rson Davis and
Tecumseh Sherman h ve both revisi
ted the glimpses of the moon, and
the Senate has voted to restore U. 8.
Grant to bis r ink in the army. There
was considerable surprise expressed

voted with the Republicans to restore
Gon. Grant.but m tn surprise.will he

shall allow the bill to become a law.

Anti with ills namo arid prestige, and

There is a disposition on the D-m

‘ The remaining days ot th? session
